Do we have Sundadanio axelrodi "Blue" in New Zealand?

They came in quite recently (i.e within the last three or so months) - they may still be available from wholesalers. They were just listed as axelrod's rasbora (no indication of colour form i.e. red, green or blue). I took a punt and got some - they do appear to be the blue form, though you couldn't really tell this in the shop tank as the blue colour only seems to show well when they're directly underneath the light.

Joe, I know you have been wanting these for a while. If you really want them, don't hesitate. They might not be around for long.

I definitely agree - they're not a regular import (only the second time I've seen them for sale in the last 10 or so years - but then I don't see the wholesale lists to know if it was just my local not stocking them), also our local shop has had trouble keeping them alive. The 20 or so I have are in a species tank with only a few corys and whiptails keeping them company and they're doing fine.

Where's the nearest and cheapest place to get them? I want about 30-50 :bounce:

What is the price per fish? Would the shops give me a discount if I bought a large amount?

I'm not sure about nearest and cheapest place for you. For me (if I became aware that a fish I wanted was available) I'd be off to my LFS, ask them if they'd got access to that fish from their suppliers, if yes how much would it be for x amount (where 30

The image of them here is a good representation of how my males have coloured up.

No, why would you?

Oh stink! I'd have to talk to a ChCh shop then, because the shop here puts ridiculously high prices on everything. Do you really want to pay $5 for a Neon, or even more outrageous, $15 for a Rummynose Tetra, that isn't even good quality! So basically, when it comes to fish, the shop here sucks! Some of the lighting stuff and filter media is quite cheap though.

Which shop in ChCh would be best to talk to, and give me a good price? Redwoods? Organism?

Nelson shop prices are similar. We do not have a dedicated fish shop here, just a garden centre that sells some fish.

We have extra freight and small population base here so can't get the cheaper prices offered by larger centres.

To say a shop sucks just because it does not have the resources to get in every aquatic thing you want, all the best quality, at a low price is expecting a bit much Joe!

Freight is a killer and it would be difficult to keep heaps of tanks running with stuff not selling and still make a profit so prices will go up..

I think alot of how willing a shop is to help you out is based on how much of a good and loyal customer you are and how you come across, if you ask for stuff as cheap as possible it offends people. But if you ask for a good deal then you might get somewhere, also knowing what suppliers they use and what supplier is selling what you want helps because it may be a supplier they use regularly and can combine shipping with other orders to get costs down.

So would I get them at wholesale price? :bounce:

That's more than a little unrealistic Joe :D. The shop still needs to be making something from the transaction - but because it's lower risk for them (i.e. they have a buyer for the fish and won't have the fish sitting in their tanks for who knows how long, eating food, taking up space and possibly dying) then I'd personally expect them to move a bit on the price (i.e. you get a deal compared to regular markup).

Ryan's comment about the shop perceiving you as a good and loyal customer is also important. I'd like to think I've got a good relationship with the LFS's here in Hamilton and I don't try to get 'a deal' on fish that they regularly have in stock - it's more for stuff that under normal circumstances they wouldn't even order. By having this good relationship and telling them what types of fish I'm looking out for they'll often let me know if something comes up on the wholesalers list and ask if I'd like some ordered in for me.

Of course, if I ever mucked them around - i.e. asked them to get particular fish in for me and then I said "nah, I've changed my mind - you can keep them" then I'd expect that they wouldn't order fish in specifically for me ever again.

I fully agree there Rob.

I have built a relationship with the small local petshop here and the owner now gives me a copy of the wholesale list to browse. She realises that I am also in retail and I understand the need for the shop to make a living and therefore am not going to expect to pay next to nothing. Unless I am buying something in great volumes, I do not expect a discount from their already reasonable prices.

I find this very handy as I can look for what I want when I want. They happily order stuff in directly for me and will call me when they arrive.

Bad news - mum told me that I'm not allowed to get them, and I have to focus on getting my new tank set up and getting the bits for it, and then I can worry about getting other fish afterwards. I have plenty of room in my 150 liter holding tank, but mum still says no

If anyone gets these fish, breed them so they stay in the country :D
