My thoughts are a bunch of small tanks each with a male fighter cascading alonge and heated with a decent heater and filtered with my EHIEM ^^

You can do this with siphon overflows too But it is not good for higher flow applications.

I'm not too keen on cutting the glass though. Might give it a try with small plastic things for a betta barracks set up

I have done it with siphon based ones on a bank of 2fters and it worked ok, as livingart has suggested there is some risk involved with it as siphons are more likely to block up or stop than a hole drilled in the glass but it can be done, I ran 2 overflows on each tank to make sure it had redundancy.

Wouldn't it be far simpler and less risky to just divide up a large tank?

i would think the same, and have a mesh over the top of each divider
