hey Zayne

We should all do that eh

Get rid of all those fish shops... yea, they are all nasty eh Fancy someone making a living and feeding their family

We should all import our own fish and heaters and pumps as well eh

Yea great idea

Maybe when we have a problem with the law we should import our own lawyer as well, cheaper in Uganda

And while we are at it, houses are cheaper in Alaska so we should also import those as well

Mind you, there may not be too many people employed at that stage... hope you have enough money in the bank for the next 60 years

Sorry to poke fun at you but by all means if you want to see the end of shops here, simply dont support them but when you need new fish or something else, dont come crying!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats right Zayne.

Don't try and save yourself any money.

Don't buy in bulk from overseas so you and others benefit.

Don't try and make any money yourself (only the lfs is allowed to do that)

Don't believe in a free market economy where those that supply a good quality product at a good price will do well while the others fall by the wayside.

And Don't listen to Barrie

Well as it works out im only paying $1.50 per hundred gram packet and maf approve of it!!!

Be aware that if you are importing to sell you can (should) be paying customs fees on it, and also I think I remember that it has to be (at your cost) treated with radiation or something like that when you bring in larger quantities..

There will be no customs fees attracted on the import.

If they are freeze dried / vacuum packed, they may be opened pursuant to the MAF Biosecurity Act (i have rolls of their tape here somewhere hahaha) and they will probably sniff around it and that's about it.

I sort of agree with Barrie. If you're importing, then obviously the LFS will lose that sale. I personally like to support my local businesses, and I only import when something isn't available. But I'm not saying you should let the LFS gouge you either.

Have you considered talking to the owner about the fact you can get them cheaper if you import? He or she may be happy to give you a price break if you're buying a lot. They're in it to make sales, give them a chance. You may be surprised. I was in a local store tonight and wanted something that was $10 more expensive than driving through to the next town. He and I agreed to split the difference to reflect the convenience of me being able to buy 5 mins walk from home.

Don't be afraid to ask people to sharpen their pencil if you think you're getting clipped, but have a think about a fair margin too. They have to carry the overheads for the store, you don't. But if you want the stores to be there, you've gotta support them.

Nicely worded John.

I also think it's better to support local business and when talking petshops I try and support the small business family run type places. But there is a niche for everything and sometimes I also have to look after my own pocket and will go to where the price is right.

I have imported items from overseas because they were either way more competitive or simply a better version or more easily available. But I'm not going to cut out the NZ guy for the sake of just a few $. It's all about balance.

Simple thing is KP, you are employed by someone (even if you have your own bussiness, your still hired by NZer)

Each time you take away business from a company here you make it less profitable and therefore possibly make them close shop. Whos going to employ you then?

There is already an excess of things here making them less profitable.

Now I also note that Zayne is selling to people on this forum. I hope that he is declaring this to the IRD and paying his tax as when these shops go under because of saving a dollar and the free market, we are going to need him to pay for the shops staff on unemployment.

If you buy 20 pkts of frozen blood worm, you can get it for $4.00 per packet. Now personally, I dont think that the importer and the shops are being unfair.

I would hope that when the shops find out who is taking their profits away they simply black list them.... that too is free market

That is also why I wont cut down glass people bring into me that they have got from the road side collections. It dosnt feed my family

Honestly, think about the whole picture and not your own selfish small time savings.

Think about how you would feel if people started treating you this way

Wasn't it supposed to be the end of the world when the red shed came to town or kfc or mcdonalds etc etc.

Sure ,those that could not compete either fell by the way side or changed their target market or became more specialised.

Yes some jobs were lost as business's failed but others were created at the same time

I believe that with the creation of the Internet and the ability of Internet users to source their own products if they so desire that business's will need to evolve just like they have had to evolve in the past.

Yes

there are now towns that have almost closed down

Just think if The Warehouse started in Motueka, even the corner store would be closed

Our whole rag trade here in NZ is lost. Is that a good thing or bad?

I suppose that if your on the side that has lost their job, its not so good.

Im sure that some on here would remember Glengyle Knitware? Quality knitware that lasted many years and was without a doupt some of the finest womens knitware money could buy. They now import all their gear from china. Was a staff of 200, now a staff of 3.

Im lucky that this dose not effect me and I sincerly hope that your job is safe KP

Me, I stick to quality, service and supporting local industries that employ people like you

barrie have you had this happen to you before??

No but I do blacklist people that try to undercut and do the dirty on me

I wont deal with them at all and as I have too muck work and stick with those that support me, the blacklisted people are the ones that lose in the end

Barrie, we do have a warehouse in motueka, It has been here for about 5 years.

Initially the locals were all like you and poo pooed the thought of it.

Soon they all realised that the red shed bought more people into the community from outlying areas, small business's thrived and the main street went from having every second shop empty to being a busy and diverse town centre that provides employment for far more people than it ever did.
