antwan
I went to bed last night with 3 blue cochu tetra's in my tank. I woke up with 2 in my tank and no body. Anywhere. There are also adhesive eggs all over the tank (glass, rocks, substrate, plants). so I'm guessing they spawned last night. The missing fish was VERY fat and had been feeding on live food, bloodworms and flake. There was definitely no sickness and the fish looked very healthy. I can't find her body anywhere in the tank, canister filter or in my room... The other two aren't swimming around like they normally are and instead are sketching out down by the gravel. Any ideas?? SamH
What else is in the tank? Sometimes fish small fish can be cleaned up very quickly.
MarkLB
Do you have a cat? Maybe the fish jumped out and was nabbed from the floor.
antwan
The only other fish in there are two small apisto's about the same size and no cat. Just me. The behaviour of the remaining two is what's really getting me...maybe they witnessed something terrible
Caryl
It is guilt - they ate her body!
Adrienne
They ate the good bits and buried the rest - look under where they are sitting for the skeleton On the serious note - are you sure thats she's not wedged between something like rocks or plants or is her body floating up the top of the tank. Scottie841
Are you sure the stuff spread around the tank is eggs?
antwan
I'm positive they are eggs, and the fish isn't stuck anywhere, I've pulled up all the rocks, and not in the canister either (it was off last night). I think I will just give her the point and stop worrying..at least she got to mate before she died

paekakboyz
maybe stuck behind the tank? if they were 'getting it on' near the surface could she have jumped or something? or perhaps it was the mothership!!

antwan
A mod changed it because apparently 'root' might offend someone I was pretty wrapped that they spawned, it's a pity she didn't stick around for another go.. still no sign of a body or a smell around the room so I'm stumped
Adrienne
So Antwan, will these eggs hatch if they have been fertilised or does the female need to be around to tend to them?
skippy_49nz
Is it possible something happened which munched the adult fish up and maybe all the eggs just got spread from inside her. In that case they may not be fertile.
antwan
Yea Skippy that's always a possibility but all the ones I could see have been eaten anyways. Most tetras require their eggs to be left in the dark for them to hatch so I'd assume these guys to be the same.
darkfur
I think your fish have indigestion...
antwan
I have a group of 7 of these now and when I turned the light on this morning they were all racing around the tank madly. Then I saw a puff of eggs slowly sinking I have never seen tetras spawning before so it was pretty cool to witness.
Neon
That's cool :bounce: hopefully some will hatch! I've seen spawning behaviour from tetras before but never seen any eggs.
