axolotl-danio
They are shaver chickens and we used to have some a while ago but they all died of old age. They are a very good laying breed, the last chickens eggs were so big they would not allow the egg carton to close. They already have names: Korma, Masala, Rogan and Vindaloo

smidey
we will be "turning over" our stock every 2 or 3 years as they lay less each year.
Ira
we will be "turning over" our stock every 2 or 3 years as they lay less each year. You need to read a book to them to make them lay more. I hear they really like books of poultry...

bdspider
My household has new chickens too! Ours are year old ex-battery hens though, and they're missing half their feathers & one has a limp. There's 3 of them, but only getting 1 egg a day at the moment... settling in period I guess. livingart
we got some new chickens, not as good egg layers as your red shavers though but they are awful pretty

You usually have to comprimise between laying ability and looks when it comes to chickens.

bdspider
Ummmmm, over the last 2 days we have had a crazy variety of eggs from the girls.... What's with the mini one?!??! Here's the flatmates baby enjoying watching them. They're still very manky, although their feathers look shinier now. And some pretty spotty chickens at Willowbank (Can't remember what breed they are. Apparently they're decent layers for a decorative breed!) smidey
our shavers lay eggs almost twice the size of the orpingtons. the shavers are in their second year & shavers first so they will get bigger as they get older.
