My new 250L setup. feedback on scaping pls!

Just picked it up yesterday, my custom 4ft 250L (65g) tank.

It has tinted sides, back and bottom, with a lightly smoked front panel, lids cut short for feeding, filters etc... Black silicon looks so good too!

Got a cheap 30W light unit, looks and works well. Filtration will be an Aquaone Clearview 800, and my current CF1200 canister providing 2000lph (9 times filtration) 300W heater should manage ok.

Bought 25kg of pool filter sand and spent a good part of my evening washing it last night.

The tank is still curing and wont be able to have water in for a few days yet. Should be ok that ive put sand in it already?

Aquascaping is done. Lots of little hidy holes but still providing good swimming areas up top and in front. I dont really have issues with aggression, so line of sight breakers etc arent terribly important here.

Plants - the back will have about 6 big vallis providing a nice backdrop, swaying in the current.

Will put a few potted javaferns in the front area and see if they get dug up or not.

Fish list:

1 x 3'' red tailed shark

10 x tiger barbs

1 x 3'' female Salvini

1 x 2'' male convict

1 x 2'' Tiger Oscar

1 x 4'' blue acara

The stocking will be fine for about a year, once the oscar reaches 8''+ might start getting a bit crowded. He got beaten up when he went in the 3ft with the rest of the fish, so thinking of adding him to the new tank first and letting him have a few days before the rest are added?

Feedback appreciated :)

Very Nice Morcs :D

Are you going to train your fish to jump through that Hoop  :hail:

thanks. Yes I had a jewel who'd swim through it once...

I think it needs a focal point, use the golden ratio. (http://www.aquatic-eden.com/2006/11/gol ... aping.html) Perhaps some of the wood or rocks could be taller or standing up?

Cheers Sam, yeah I know it needs a focal point, but this is an Oscar tank :) However I decorate, hes going to move it all around once hes big enough

Trust me on this one, once waters in and there a bit of green, it will look stunning :)

I'd offer to sit in the tank......

I cant work what type of sand that is.. as in the size. will the fish be able to throw it all around the place? does it settle quick? it looks real natural though!

Sand is actually really nice. quite dense and heavy. Ive just got to remember to let it all settle before I turn on filters... I dont think id like the sound of an impeller grinding sand

Looks good but why didnt ya get it bigger to go lenght of stand.

Thought about it when I got the stand home and measured it... ohh 150cm! but its just a bit too short for a 5ft...

4x1.5x1.5ft is the largest tank ill have in this house :)

All fish are in and its planted. Looks a million bucks. 2000lph of filtration heheh I let my betta out into it and he couldnt swim against it. Lol.

Waiting for the fish to settle etc.. but heres a full tank shot prior to planting, then some random fish shots after its planted.

Full tank. Was still looking pretty drab at that point.

More pics in a few days :)

  • 1 month later...
you could stick a fine sponge on the filter nosel to stop the sand going up it

just a thought!

Already done! Cheers though.

The prefilter works great. the filter media stays a lot cleaner a lot longer, and I just pop the sponge out (in a cup so all the debris doesnt fall back into the water) give it a rinse, put it back on, done!

The stocking and scaping has changed slightly, means I should take some new pics soon (once all the breeding containers are gone, holding guppies until the nano is setup)

At the moment:

Tiger oscar (about 4'' now)

Indonesian Tiger Datnioid (about 3.75'')

Jurupari (about 3.5'')

Male BN (about 4'')

Delhezi Polypterid (4.5'')

and 12 tigers barbs now!

Filtration has changed, switched the canister out for an Aquaclear 110 (higher turnover, less power usage, easier to maintain) and am looking for another one to replace the aquaone clearview 800.

Hiya Morcs, i have a little ok maybe a coulple of questions to ask you, pool filter sand looks really good in your tank, did you just go and ask your local pool, and how did you clean it, and one more lol does it change any thing in the water like the ph and the rest of it, i would really like to go get some of it, my tank is 1.2m long 31 wide and 41 high thank you :D

Yep I just went and asked a pool place (that I saw from the motorway lol), to wash it, simply fill half a bucket, and run it under a tap whilst youve got your hands in churning the sand around, then carefully empty the water, and repeat 3 more times, then when it comes to adding water to the tank there will be next to no mess!

It maybe alters the ph a bit, previous tanks (without sand) have been 6.8-7.0, and this tank sits between 7.0 and 7.2, and it may not even be the sand causing that, even so, its minimal.

I hope this helps :)
