VinsonMassif
I want to know why most strains of Discus are mostly Orange, or shades of Orange? I hate orange, and all golden shades Why are their no real Red ones? I mean true red, not the dark orange ones which are passed on as red. The only other common strains are Blue Turq. or Blue cobalt. And yes I have trolled through all those asian fish comp./farm threads of endless Discus which all look the same. Sure they are healthy specimens. But talk about boring. All I could think of was caged chickens about the mass bred, bare tanks of bored fish. I have to admit I don't like Discus anyway. All they do all day is sit there treading water. IMHO it would be of better value to have a painted rock in my tank in the shape of, than spend money on a boring shade of Orange fish which just sits there all day. darkfur
there was a really red one on tm the other day as to why, I suppose it is what pigments their body makes - if no discus have genes for a red pigment then the closest you will get is an intense orange I get the feeling you won't ge buying any anyway lol
Dixon1990
Another reason would be that albino take up quite a percentage of the different strains.

But I shan't go on about that or else I would get in trouble.
David R
Wild types are awesome, the fancy line-bred ones interest me about as much as fancy goldfish and long-finned oscars.
spoon
im not a discus fan but the red ones at redwood aquatics are really awesome
livingart
Have seen this before with birds, everyyone breeds the new colours and wild becomes cheap as chips so all stop breeding them until not much wild type left
VinsonMassif
im not a discus fan but the red ones at redwood aquatics are really awesome Seen them and they are still orange imo. Great specimen's. Still not worth that price though.
Bilbo
Orange are yuk, so are the yellows, creams and brick-reds. I am a wild discus fan also especially the wild browns. Turqs and blues are ok too as long as they arent the spraypainted looking solid powder blue ones.
VinsonMassif
Yes the wild browns are not half bad. I kind of envisage these orange discus more at home in the '60's when flower-power was the rage. Except the stoner's would most likely have them in a gold fish bowl in their VW peace bus. ROFL. LOL! Who's having a bad day then? Just to take the contrary view, I think there's nothing more beautiful than a shimmering golden fish in front of a dark green, leafy backdrop. phoenix44
the only orangish discus i like are the checkerboards (or super Checkerboards). Prefer the duller browns, blues, greens, and the bright solid blues.
DAuckland
Yes but they are still orange. do you really understand the discus genetic and strain ?
VinsonMassif
There is nothing for me to understand imo. Most discus strains for sale in NZ look Orange. What is there to understand?
