David R Posted May 24, 2009 Report Share Posted May 24, 2009 I haven't made one for a tank, but I have done one for growing plants. The heating cable goes in a bed of sand about 100mm thick. HaNs Posted May 24, 2009 Author Report Share Posted May 24, 2009 Its a 38L aqua nova tank Cant put it under due to the design of the bottom(plastic runners and other bits) Dont see why its any better under the tank? Can run it under the sand as its a bare bottom tank We have many heat pads from growing plants but they are not suitable. Spose i need a element and a rheostat? Caryl Posted May 26, 2009 Report Share Posted May 26, 2009 I have instructions for making under tank heat pads and we use them here. I can send instructions if they are still needed. The hardest part is finding the thermostat. Our lounge tank has had our home made heat pad under it for 10 - 15 years now. alanmin4304 Posted June 2, 2009 Report Share Posted June 2, 2009 I have very good electronic thermostats on mine that read the temperature and have a minimum hysteresis of one degree. The cost over $100 and came from Homershams in Christchurch. Argossy in Christchurch also make the undertank heaters--- you give them the footprint and the wattage and they make it up all enclsed in aluminium foill.
