Guest
I heard kribs a really easy to breed. What sort of tank setup would be best to breed them in? Is it be best to have a bare bottom tank or stones in the bottom?
Vinnie
From what I've found, a cave is a must. I use stones and haven't had any problems.
Guest
I thought the fry may fal through the stones?
Adrienne
I had more luck in a bb tank but that may have just been that mum got hungry the second time round lol. I just had a cave in there and they laid on the roof of it.
Guest
I just set the tank up with stones . Oh well I'll try it with stones. I've made 2 cave and they have several peices of java fern in the tank so it looks nice. Do you know if the male will have a pink belly? I bought a pair today and the female has bright pink/red belly and the "male" has a fainter pink belly.
alanmin4304
I bred them many times in caves in a community tank and siphoned the babies out a few days after free swimming. I then raised them on brine shrimp nuplii in bare tanks.
lmsmith
I did the same with lionhead cichlid babies. They fell through the gaps in the stones, and I'd just syphon them out. They survived for a few weeks with hungry puffers.
Guest
I want to leave the babies with the parents so don't really like to siphon them out of the tank. Will they get stuck in the gravel? I've made my pair a cave out of rocks and on the bottom it's just stones. Will this be OK? The female has the brightest belly ever and the male has a pinkish tinge on his one, so far the males stolen the cave but the female tries to get in there and he'll peck at her until she gets out but she'll still go straight back into it  . Is this normal? He's not really attacking her just annoying her until she leaves
Simian
IME they like some flow through the cave so make sure its not a dead ended one, the female will jiggle in front of him to get him interested. They are cool to watch and mine have all been very good parents. watch that one doesn't get too defensive and beat up its partner when the young are hatched, you may need to seperate them for a while. If they don't pair up for you I can hook you up with some more females, I'll pick the 3 best out before I sell my next batch and if you are serious about breeding them you can have them for nothing. If they do pair up you will soon be swamped with babies, so get a microworm culture ready. P.S. give em a feed of white or blood worms that gets mine in the mood for lovin Good luck Cam Owen
Guest
Thanks for the great info and that offer of some more females . The female is following him around the tank with her back (anal??) fin tucked up and jiggling in front of him (I heard she does this to make her belly look bigger to win the male if theres other females in the tank). So hopefully they'll pair up but I'll let you know. At the moment I'm addicted to dwarf cichlids. So farI have 2 breeding pairs of blue rams, a breeding pair of F1 tripple red X wild Cockatoos a pair of kribs and a gold rams. My only worry is if they do breed the babies will get stuck in the gravel. Will do a cool water change and feed blood worms when they settle in and see if that gets them going. And alan do you by any chance have any females i could have? I might be able to swap you a male if you still have them

alanmin4304
It is a lot easier to see the difference with males and females when you have some of each. Sorry, I don't have any kribs at the moment. I was breeding the albinos and they throw a small percentage of normals, which is unusual for albinos. Guest
Do you think the babies will be OK on stons or will the parents loose them?
alanmin4304
They should be fine on stones.
Vinnie
I have stones in the tank mine are in and there hasn't been any problems, just made it a bit harder to siphon the fry out

But do you guys think I might have some problems with 6 males and 1 female. I have one big male krib who is bigger than the rest owns the flower pot and he does not seem to like the female, and all the other males look like they are compeating for the female do you think this is a prob?
