Silvia-15
Looking to go to a nice beach next monday, what are the nice sandy beaches within 1ish hour drive??? thanks
davidb
central Auckland beaches are pretty bad to be honest. Your best bet is Karekare, Bethells or Muriwai. The lake at karekare is great too, and more than enough sand there! and a jetty you can jump off. hardly any people there either
Andrew_W
dont goto the west coast you'll drown....but yeah they are pretty bad...long bay? perhaps
Wok
Long Bay Orewa is a good one too.
Adrienne
West coast beaches like Muriwai are great if you can swim. If you are taking a boogie board take flippers as well. Long Bay is good and safe. Be aware though that if the day is hot there will be queues, leave early to get a park and make sure you take plenty of shade and sunblock with you. (lessons I have well learnt).
Stu :)
Or you could try Waiake... between Browns Bay and Long Bay. It's a small beach but it's fairly quiet and empty, the sort of place only the locals goto; and because it's a "local" plenty of car parking. supasi
Or jump on the ferry and go to Waiheke. Catch the bus at the other end and get off at one of the beaches. Nice golden sand, safe swimming. also reasonable fishing.

bulldogod
From memory its pretty shallow at low tide, should be on map, on the main road just past browns bay, still gets reasonably crowded tho

Stu :)
whats it like for swimming and is it on the map? http://www.wises.co.nz/#c/2rg56/713ry/1/ I guess it's pretty good for swimming, but I have morbid fear of the water (yes I know I keep fish, have RC boats and work at the maritime museum) so have no personal experience. I seem to recall there being a pontoon you can swim out to, then jump off and swim back... I didn't see it last time I was there; I wasn't really looking, having too much fun chasing the people learning to kayak with a 1.5m 26cc RC boat :bounce: Stu
bulldogod
Been at Takapuna beach today, great, everyones away so not many people there.
David R
Mangawhai is a bit more than an hour, but its a great beach. Why not make a weekend of it and head up to whangarei, from ocean beach at the tip of the heads all the way up to whananaki north, there's enough beautiful beaches to keep anyone busy for years!
