  1. That's what I was thinking, all the small tank breeding setups I saw never used (from what I could tell) bigger than 2x2. Although I did see a nice strong metal stand at Bunnings on sale... Ditto... but I prefer balsa and bass wood ...and sometimes I mix a bit of plastic in as well... ...sorry getting off topic here  Stu
  2. I'm in the process of reorganizing my breeding tanks (one lives next to the drill press and lathe ) and was thinking of rather have them scattered around the garage, maybe put them all onto one convenient shelving unit. I've looked at the metal shelves one can buy at Mitre10, Bunnings and Super Cheap Auto; to be fair I'm not very convinced by the units, and the pricey'er ones look alright but the cost seems at tad crippling compared to DIY with timber. I was wondering what sized timber does everyone else use for breeding tank stands? I've seen a number of other fish breeders stands online and the wood varies from 'stupidly' thin to 2x2 and 2x3. At this point I want to mount six tanks- two 60 litres and four 50 litres in a three high by two wide configuration with spaces for fry rearing boxes. Many thanks, Stu
  3. It's part of a giant water lily leaf and the reflection of the Winter Gardens roof. The first one was shot on a Hasselblad 500C with a 80mm CF at f8 for around 20 seconds, Fuji Velvia 50. The second one was shot on a Lubitel2 at f5.6 for about two minutes, Fuji Provia 400. I've also a got a good 8x10 lighting shot, but I haven't yet got it onto print or scanned. Stu
  4. He's some random stuff from one of the hard drives... ...
  5. As I said with the Eheim USB filter; it's new technology, it's going to cost a bomb. Give it a few years and it will get cheaper... also and off shoot of affordable LED fluoros means that traditional tube technology will also get cheaper. Stu
  6. So if stated that the last version of Ubuntu I saw was fatter then Windows7 (beta) would I get into trouble??? Stu PS. I really do dig W7 right now... well bar the lack of driver support for my Sony laptop's WiFi
  7. I know LED 'fluorescents' ain't new news, but it looks like they are getting better at it. http://www.elektor.com/news/led-tube-lamp-replaces-40w-fluorescent-tube.862501.lynkx?utm_source=UK&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=news Stu
  8. ROFL !!! Classic Zev... Stu PS. Don't bother with the linux guys for tech support; they're all a bunch of snobs...
  9. From what I read two months back on another forum; it could easily cost a good chunk more then a FX5! Remember this is first generation technology so it's going to cost a bomb, however USB integration is on the surface a fairly cheap and simple setup- two chips, driver and a sazzy bit of software. If the technology catches on it would only be a matter of time before the likes of Kongs/AquaOne, Jebo, Weipro, SunSun, etc start making their own and bring the price of the technology down. Now I don't have a problem with the potential software updates for my aquarium... but what concerns me is what's a fishy version of the 'Blue Screen of Death' Stu
  10. If you want to reduce the iron content (if any) in your sand, I buy a set of play magnets from a $2 store and drop them in bucket with the sand. Shake the bucket side to side, remove magnets which should be covered in a fine-medium black grit and a quick wash off using a 'blast' of water from a tap and repeat. Also using rear earth magnet in a small plastic zip lock works too. Stu
  11. Cat Litter, the Zeolite based stuff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeolite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeolite#Aquarium_keeping Put half a cup in a stocking (you can get six packs of granny knee stockings from the $2 shop), rinse VERY well and either put it in the filter or in the path of a water current, remove once ammonia is gone or has stabilized; this means that the zeolite has adsorbed all the ammonia it can and is about to and/or started to leach ammonia back into the system. Yes your water will go cloudy for a awhile, but it will settle. Stu

  15. Pfffzz! Should have bought an Epson  or try... http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=k6C_HjWr3Nk But seriously what's stopping it? Is the software not installing, is it installing but not working, can the computer find the printer, etc etc.... Stu
  16. ...and the DOH! Award goes to... You should have wired 20 fans in series and you would have been fine  Stu
  17. Ok then... so how about using something like pumice stones or nylon pot scourers that sort-of do half of each? Stu
  18. I share a bedroom with a Jebo 508 hang on filter and mine's quite quiet. In fact the soft sound of the water trickling back into the tank puts me to sleep! The only noise that bothers me is the silver dollars thrashing around at night. Stu
  19. When setting up a canister filter and NOT using the supplied carbon/zeolite (as it would be a pain), you replace the layer with an extra mechanical filter layer or an extra bio filter layer? This is going on my odd ball tank with a five/six times turnover. Many thanks, Stu
  20. Anyone keen to go halves on a Black Ghost Knife or something else in the $50 ball park at Animates? If keen PM me! Stu
  21. Is sand* an OK/Good substrate to use with Bumblebee gobys and Figure Eight puffers? If not I'm open suggestions... Stu * The stuff you buy from the bark/stone/landscape yards, well washed, pH neutral, which is the same stuff I'm using in my grow out tank
  22. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Maybe someone else with my train of thought/humor??? :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/cubegoodies/a7f1/?cpg=ab Would be my best bet... And don't forget to get yourself a Darwin fish - http://evolvefish.com/ or two as they seem to magically walk off the car  For the book try - http://www.abebooks.com/ ...then I'll start you on Carl Sagan Stu
