fish on an aeroplane

If they travel on the plane they will surely die.

At that altitude it is extremely cold.

But

On the other-hand, if they were in the plane, they will be fine.

Lot warmer there.

That's how they come to NZ, and there is no internal customs,

well not yet anyway,

wait for it.

they are fine i often have people take fish on planes (you have to put them in water)

go to your lfs and ask them if you can buy or have one of the boxes they get there fish in from he importer.

when doing up the bag on a short trip like that just use your airpump to put air in the bags , put 2 bags on them just to be on the safe side and happy traveling

I have carried fish in hand luggage (better if you don't tell them you have them as sometimes they decide not to let you take them) in one of those foldable hot/cold 6 pack carry bags. No problem. Just make sure you have 1/4 water to 3/4 air and not too many fish per bag. Double bag and pack with newspaper to keep them from falling over if necessary. If you are really worried you can fill a bottle with hot water and wrap it in newspaper or cloth to use as a heat pad but it should not be necessary on such a short trip.

Of course if you are not actually travelling with the fish it might be more difficult. :D

We buy fish from ChCh and drive home with them - a 4 hour minimum trip. Never had a problem. A cooler bag as hand luggage and they will be fine. I have also flown (in a plane - before someone makes a smart comment) carrying axolotls in an icecream container. :D

I travelled Hamilton - ChCh with apple snails recently as hand luggage in a chilly bag. Did the right thing at Hamilton and checked it was okay with the airline - they said it was up to the individual "controller" at each airport as to whether they allowed it and let me through but gave no promises for the Wellington - Chch leg. I stayed quiet at Wellington and although the bag went through the xray machine, not a single comment was made about what must have looked rather odd on the xray...I think as long as your fish don;t look anything like a pocketknife you'll be fine Krib - enjoy your trip to Chch. :D

I guess that would rule out taking any "Knifefish" on your journey then....

PS: Kribcrazy, I suggest you check out these TWO at the least whan you are in CHCH, Organism...probably Christchurch's finest suppier, tidy shop, and helpful staff...they generally have 'something different' in stock too....

And Redwood Aquatics, The largest place in CHCH...mostly they have your 'bread and butter' fish on display, sometimes they have a few different things, but mostly it's a case of 'you ask we will try to get'

Apart from that, there are a few other places dotted around, that seem to be pretty much you run of the mill suppliers.....

It's not the oxy that is reduced.

Just the pressure in the bags.

I've seen fish arrive at wholesalers,

the same as when they left the exporter, and those bags were tight.

Undo them, and it was positive pressure.

Meaning the air that came out, came out in a gush.

Can tell if there are smokers in the packing room too.
