coelacanth
this is a softshell turtle from a market in northern Thailand, from when I was over there last year. They cost 10 Baht (that's about 40 cents!!!).

coelacanth
I think there are softshells in NZ, probably around the $1000 mark

coelacanth
this is what his belly looks like! I'm assuming he's an Amyda cartilaginea because that's the most common species over there, but does anyone know which species (singular or plural!) are available in NZ? The one in the Hothouse Turtles book, for example, looks nothing like this species.
nick777
There're heaps of those in Asia, in fact, people actually farm them and kill for meat and other purposes....

broms2
Mark, thats a bummer about your turtles, keep doing what you're doing, I visited you earlier this year while down there for work and your trust in chatting with me was greatly appreciated and gave me hope of meeting more people like yourself, since then I've got into beardies as well as my turtles and am loving it! Might be down again next week so might catch you again then. Thanks Chris
