alanmin4304
Nobody apparently does it but I used to successfully use sand that will pass through a seive but retain the eggs. That way you know how many eggs you have and the % that are hatching (and you dont need marbles or steel nuts).
caserole
I find this some what puzzling. I only ever used peat in marg containers and they always sank, you must be sure to remove the air from under the rim of the lid maybe this is the problem. ikan
where do i get the peat...will sand and gravel do?
alanmin4304
They breed best in peaty water so if you use sand you still use peaty water but not peat. I use rain water with peat soaked in it. A tea bag works also.
Alan
Some of us use the Hauraki Peat but it it fairly rough tho, sticks and stones. Found out about them when I put it thru the kitchen whizz. I have foud some peat discs at the garden centre, compacted and dried and in a fine net, so that when immersed in water, it absorbs water and swells to about 50mm by 30mm circumference. Almost fine enough to go thru a sieve and leave the eggs behind. If you find these discs, make sure that they have no fert. additions. alanmin4304
I get my peat from the petshop and it is in little compressed balls--expensive but you don't need much. I collect and spawn the fish in rainwater and boil up some with the peat in a fine bag and add that to the tank. Add mops if required or fine sand as required and you don't get a mess, just eggs. They have the peat broken down into small bags for about $8.00 I think. It is high quality european stuff which I have also put through the coffee grinder with success. You need to boil it to stop it floating (keep the water.)
caserole
Did you boil the peat first to make it sink or do you have peat floating all around the surface.
livebearer_breeder
Boil it and strain it with a big fish net, one of the white sleeved fine ones preferably. And do it a few times to get all the tannins out. I prefer my tanks clearer than yellowy. Shae

Alan
At least it will be soaked and stay in the pot till the amourous fish chuck it out again. Syphon it thru a net, that will catch it all then you just need to put the water back anfd the peat into the pottle.
carla
I collect and spawn the fish in rainwater and boil up some with the peat in a fine bag and add that to the tank. Seriously? You spawn the fish in rainwater and boil up some with the peat and add that to the tank??? Why on earth do you boil some of the fish??? AquaNut
I bring my peat to the boil and then rinse it very well. Doing it this way reduces the amount of dirt in the water and makes it easy to still see the parents in the tank and even easier when hatching out fry.
