Hey guys,

I bought a bigger tank :)

What was included in this tank, I knew most of the stuff, but the following things stumped me.

qn1pk0.jpg

I'm thinking this is a under pebble bubble thing? if so, how do i attach the hose?

qn2qv4.jpg

And I'm pretty sure this is a filter, but the thingy that I pointed the arrow to doesn't turn on or make any sound and doesnt look like it has a switch. Is it buggered? Or is there something I need to do?

Thanks for your wisdom guys, much appreciated 8)

first 3 pics are under ground filter so yes "under pebble bubble thing". u connect the air hose to the hole in ur first pic of cause thats assuming u have an air pump.

last photo is a filter and if it doesn't run or make a noise while plugged in and make sure u have the filter submerged while u do this then yes its stuffed.

VisNZ that is an Under-gravel filter, the piece in your hand slides into the piece near the top of the pic.

Make sure that the fatter of the two pipes is furtherest from the glass, cuts down on the noise.

The airline fits onto the smaller of the two pipes.

EDIT:- just noticed, you are missing a smaller pipe that fits into that foot thing and that in turn, fits into the airline from the airpump

The other is a canister, internal filter.

Remove the blue top by twisting it, plug in the power and have a look into the hole on the underside.

You should see a thing like a propeller, give it a flick with your finger if it doesn't turn over and start whirring, you are prolly in trouble.

hi there

the 1st two pics are of under gravel filter(ugf)

a piece of pipe is missing , the bubbles rising up tube create a flow of water tunder the gravel , this alows the growth of benificial bacteria.

the thing with red arrow is power filter and should make a wurring noise when plugged in, sounds like that one is stuffed,

the other two items look like canister filters

hope that helps

cheers Simon

As fishboi said, the first 3 pics are an undergravel filter. There should be a large tube and a narrow tube to fit in the 2 holes in the blue bit that slides into the large plastic grid (as you have it in the 3rd pic).

An airhose fits over the top of the narrow tube and the other end of the air hose fits onto an aquarium pump.

The last pic looks like an internal filter of some sort which, if so, has a pump inside the top bit. If it makes no noise when you plug it in I would say it is stuffed.

Is the blue bit below the red arrowed container a separate thing? It looks like a small box filter. Again, this would attach to a pump like the undergravel filter does.

For the bubbles to come up.

The air goes down the little pipe across the foot and up the big pipe. As it does that, it pushes the water in the big pipe out, which then makes water suck down thru the gravel and into the underside of the plate that sits flat on the glass, and then it waits for the next bubble.

The round blue piece in the last pick on its own may fit inside of the round box filter. Holow side down, then a filter medium goes ontop of that.

A handful of gravel maybe.

Don't block the big pipe. If air bubbles are rushing up it to the surface of the water then it is doing it's job simple as that ..

As mentioned re the cannister unit try taking it apart (carefully) most pieces should be clips or twists not meaning the screws and such. and check to see if the impeller is dirty/stuck.

The two pipes on the undergravel filter are an airlift. It is not the bubbles that do the work it is the water between the bubbles. The air bubbles bring the water from under the gravel to the surface and this creates a loss of pressure under the gravel so the water runs through the gravel to replace it and is filtered by the gravel on the way. Also it is not realy the gravel doing the work it is the bacteria in the gravel. Various types of bacteria do different jobs in converting the urea from fish waste to ammonia then nitrite then nitrate. It is therefore a living filter and once started should be left going. The bubbles do not need to be going fast as it is the maximum movement of water not air that is required.
