I am thinking about getting this guy, I have always wanted one....

I just wanted to get everybodys opinion, like...

What have you had them in with???

What you feed them??

Any special needs??

What size tank he will need??

I have asked a question on the auction and he has said hes in ok with anything but I'm a little worried that he might eat some types of fish?? If i spend that money on him I want him to be happy (I want all of my fish to be happy of course) I have done some reading on the net but need personal opinions :)

Any help would be great!!!

Oh wow so you had them in a community tank??? Interesting I have read they should go in with cichlids in one place and then another place saying they can't fight back so shouldn't. :-?

What size tank was it??

Did you have any smaller fish with them??

Also what size were they??

Now you have me wanting another community tank lol OR even better to upgrade my 300ltr to a 500 ltr ****DREAMS ARE FREEE**** :)

this is quit a while ago now but i had a 3 foot around 4 of them with just ur usual community fish like danios and tetras. and BN of cause.

seen pretty peaceful fish to me and quit popular in Asian countries as Feng Shui fish. although i've heard about them been aggressive fish but i personally dont think so.

i am not sure how much they go for these days but i dont recall they ever cost $50 :-?

keep in mind theyre hybrids- not sure your views on them but im quite anti em- feel sorry for them too cause of their deformed mouths. im sure theres no need for me to do the 'reason why hybrids should not be sold or bought' rant- if you like them you like them :)

they can be agro but because of their deformed hybrid mouths they cant do much damage so will be suseptable to getting bullied if you have nastier cichlids with them that realise the parrots cant do much, putting them in with fish that can stick up for themselves would be your best bet or have a parrot only tank. they normally eat smaller tank mates. they get to around 20cm i think and require your basic needs- nothing special at all as theyre very adaptable species (due to being hybrids).

these days they go quite cheap but it isnt too unreasonable given the size-pet stores would charge you way more. personally would spend that $50 on a nice sev (which is one of the species that makes them up) or three.

good luck with your choices- i think a new tank is definatly called for

when u say ur anti hybrids does that mean all "man made" strains and mutations?

nope, creating colour strains and some mutations are fine IMO- its mixing species that gets to me- hybrids have created havoc all around the world and have ruined some of their parent species. thankfully in NZ we dont have a big market for them but its each to their own on the hybrid debate and i respect that but i wont encourage the sale of them- some love them, some hate em and some dont care

for the colour strains example- all these species of guppies etc- theyre all the same fish and have been selectively bred to bring these out- noones crossed them with brightly coloured differnent species to bring the colour out or genetically altered them.

for the mutations example- some veil tailed fish can have a real problem with their heavy fins and it can make them slower when trying to escape nets, predators etc. i wouldnt like to have extra long arms and legs to drag around  i think alot of the veiltailed ones look lovely but it seems a bit mean- i dunno *shrugs* some mutations like the many goldfish species (im not too up on them) seem to not affect the fish at all which is good.

sorry to get off topic tim-tam, back to you :D

i've just bought 2 from the animate buy 1 get one free and i find them very aggressive they bully my discus, kissing Gouramis and even BN, only thing they dont bully is my arowana

they tend to chase the fish but since they have a weird mouth they dont do any damage from what i have seen

price wise, i've looked around chch and they are about $59.95 for a 8-10cm one

Interesting thanks guys, I know what you mean Alan and Sharn, I don't support anything usually like that but when I first saw them and liked them heaps I didn't realise that they were "human made" so now i'm finding it hard to not like them. All I keep thinking is its not there fault so they deserve to be in nice homes too.....

I'm a little torn on this subject :-?

I wouldn't buy the "Buterfly Parrot"/"flower Parrot" as I think its not right trying to make a picture on the side of a fish but yea I duno i guess its the same fish in the end.....
