  1. Congrats, from what I have heard (dont know if it is true or not), female guppies can surrender the sperm they have stored (they can store enough sperm for three batches of fry), if there is a more dominant male in the tank. as I said above I dont know if that is true or not, so you may be lucky and she may have mated with that beautiful Blue Male behind her?
  2. Hello The best tank theme is one that you think off, with mine I have a love of rivers and streams, so that where i have gotten my theme from. (The only fish that I have from an Australian River/Stream is the Salmon Tail Catfish which I bought from my LFS, the others, not sure what environment they are from). Not the Best Pic of the Salmon Tail But It's upto you, best place to start is think of what your favorite fish is and create the theme to match.
  3. Hey Pearlyred, Heres a picture of my partners pregnant Swordtail, shes about 1-2 weeks off. There is more pictures below of the Female and Male, Here is a link to the rest of her Fish Photos: http://photobucket.com/albums/y252/jamjam82/
  4. Hey all, I was wondering if anyone new how to make a background for my 4ft tank, I am trying to recreate the natural river/stream look. What would be a better material, Concreate, Polystyrene, Latex? etc. And would the chemicals used in such things harm the fish? and also how would it be painted? The price of commercial ones is so high, although they are excellent depictions of natural things, its to much money to spend on a low budget. So any help would be appreciated.
  5. Hears is a link to my partners Guppies that she has, her latest lot of frys was over 100+ their mother died two days later. Sorry about the quality of the pictures they were taken using our Web Cam. The Link to the rest of her photos is down below the pic: http://photobucket.com/albums/y252/jamjam82/
  6. how about some Black Ghost Knives they get around the 25-30cm long. Or some Salmon Tail Catfish they get to around 70cm in the right condition but they take awile to grow (mine are about 5.5" or so and my BGK's are around 6"), I also have an Elephant Nose Fish he's around 7" long. there all good community fish. The Knive's will eat smaller fish as will the salmon tails when they get bigger so you may have to invest in some feeder fish when they get to the canibal stage.
  7. I have done my own research. I have been through the University Of Qld Brine Shrimp are found in the Ocean and Monkeys from salt flats IF you would have read correctly I said that you can feed the to your fish but it is not recommeded. I myself have fed them to my fish, they love them. they are quicker to grow and dont need as much attention, so no you dont have to buy the expensive stuff. but sea monkeys are probably more expensive to buy anyway.
  8. sorry I thought I added that, We are using Aqua Master Chlorine Neutral.
  9. In reply to the Sea monkeys question no there not. Sea Monkeys exist in Suspended animation, Whist inside their eggs, yet unborn, they burn the "spark of life" (Taken form Amazing Sea Monkeys Info booklet) Sea Monkeys are a variety of Artemia, a relitive of the Lobster, Crays, Fairy Shrimp and other Crustaceans, Instead of originating from the ocean Artemia are found in Salt Lakes and salt evaoration flats. The water is often so saly that they think the Artemia may be the only non microscopic animal inhabiting them. Because fish eat and thrive on brine shrimp, for years they were collected as eggs or alive to be sold as Aquarium "food". Although all along, Brine shrimp had the very qualities that would, at a later date, make them one of the most desiarable pets ever sold, it simply never dawned on anyone to consider them as anything other than fish food. Although Sea Monkeys are a Species of Brine Shrimp they are unique, we have created new formulas to keep them alive under conditions found in the average home. Although you can feed them to your fish it is not recommended due to the biological procedure used for growth. And they best as a pet then Fish Food. I hope this answers your questions.
  10. Thanks all, I will let her read your comments tomorrow so she will know.
  11. Hey all In my partners 2ft, 105L tank she has 4x Fantail Guppies, 3x Swordtails, 1x Platy. for some reason the Amonia levels keep skyrocketing. We have tried Ammo-Lock, and a few others. We have been doing 25% changes every week to help. The Filter we are using is a Aqua One 102F Maxi internal Filter which cycles 500L/Hr, and now where trying a corner filter filled with carbon as well to try to eliminate the problem, but still not working. Has anyone got any advise I could give her for this problem, Here is a link to her tank to show you the fish she has. Sorry about the quality they were taken with our webcam. http://photobucket.com/albums/y252/jamjam82/ Any help would be greatful, as the fish are slowly dying off one by one.
  12. Thanks thats what i was after,
  13. I'm after any info on Salmon Tail Catfish I have 3 of them and my neighbors have 4 of them, but I cant seem to find any info over the net about them except for the ones you catch in the wild, any help would be greatly apreciated.
  14. You could try Livebearer Conditioning Salts, or Triple-Sulfa, and Stress- Zyme, The salts are to try to replicate the natural environment of guppies, and the Triple-Sulfa is a Broad Spectrum Medication for Aquarium Fish, and the Stress-Zyme is to reduce the stress of the guppy. Most LFS should stock these items. From what my partner has said (she's the guppy person) its one of the hardest to control so your best bet is to quarantine the guppy and medicate both tanks according to the instructions. Here's a link to her guppy pics, sorry about the quality as they were taken on a webcam. http://photobucket.com/albums/y252/jamjam82/ and here is mine: http://photobucket.com/albums/y273/dee_jay_01/
  15. Come to think of it, i think i did use 2 table spoons of rock salt per Litre of water.
  16. I love that big tank, anyways with the Aqua One filters, the out lets need to be towards the top of the tank and the inlet about 4 - 6" from the bottom as the do suck a lot of garbage into the filter, it makes it hard when its such a big tank though. You could try staggering the Filters ins and out at different levels to try to circulate the tank a bit better. I have only got a 4ft tank so I dont have this sort of problem that much. Heres a link if ya interested. http://photobucket.com/albums/y273/dee_jay_01/
  17. hello, a nice way and cheap way of cleaning the out side of the tank is with Brown Vinegar on newspaper as it doesn't normally streak the glass. You may be thinking why Brown? It's because brown vinegar has a nicer smell and white for some reason streaks. And a bottle of Vinegar last longer then the Household cleaners. hope this helps.
  18. hey all, I used to breed fresh water Red Claw, in Northern Australia where the water is almost always 24-30deg in summer they loved it, they were more active, ate more, and breed more. just be careful; they dont take a fancy to your fish as they are notorius for plucking them out of the water if there hungry. I would recommed if you do get them the like shallow water with heaps of airation and PVC tubes about 10" long to hide in (the length is so more then one will go in, and they will always go in tail first so becareful when tipping them out) just close of one end with some flyscreen mesh so when you want to get them out they go in and you can pick them up out of the water. Also their excellent climbers as well, they can climb up the silicon in fish tanks so make sure you have ample covering over your tank. If you have guppies becareful thats there favorite food. So buy some feeders guppies from your LFS for them and they might leave the other alone. They also love Pig or Chicken Pellets from any Produce and Stock Feed Shop. If you want any more help just ask.
  19. Yeah I agree I think another 1-2-3 or so would do nicely, but need a new tank and a bigger house with some space for them. Here is some pictures of my fish and tank, sorry the quality isn't all that good they were taken on my web cam in the morning with the sun glaring baddly. Here is some Links to the rest of my pictures and my partners fish also taken on our web cam: http://photobucket.com/albums/y273/dee_jay_01/ http://photobucket.com/albums/y252/jamjam82/
  20. Most LFS have a product called "Snail Rid" I cant remember the brand name but it works quite well i have used it numerous times. Also sails can go into a hibernation like period just like land ones do. They produce a hard rubber like substance which goes over the opening of their shells, not much can harm them when their in this state. Another good piece of advice is to rinse any weed you buy from your LFS throughly before placing into your tank. I hope this helps.
  21. from what you say it sounds like Columnaris, here's a site that might be of some interest: http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/hdcolumn.htm and another: http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profile ... naris.html and another: http://www.fishpalace.org/Disease.html I hope this helps you and others to diagnose your problems.
  22. Mine started to come to my hand but not eat out of it. (He passed away yesterday, now I only have 2). He would swim in and out of my cupped hand but not when feeding. But from what I have heard just keep putting your hands in the tank as often as possible when not feeding to get them used to your hands.
  23. My 3 Black Ghosts arn't quite big enough yet to eat my smaller fish but hopefully by the time they get bigger i will have them in their own 4ft tank trying to breed them with about 6 others to help them along. Underwater World at Mooloolabah on the Sunshine Coast Australia has about 20 or so in a about a 3ft long x 2ft high x 2ft wide tank it looks mean, they also have a loan Elephant Nose in there as well, and the whole tank is full of Snake Weed and a few rock caves for them. Doesn't look natural for them but they say thats what they like as well as a lot of current. I'm going to research them at my local Uni who do Aquaculture Courses and try to make my breeding tank as natural as possible. (ANY HINTS WOULD BE GREATFUL).
  24. I have 3 BGK's in one tank, as well as an Elephant Nose, 3 Salmon Tail Catsfish, 2 Male Sailfin & 2 Female Sailfin Molly's, 12 Glass Blood Fin Tetras, 2 Bristle Nose Catfish. All Living in harmony, i'm looking to get 2 Clown Loaches, and 2 Royal Whip Tails catfish. I feed them Frozen Blood Worm of an Evening and Flakes of a Morning they all love the flakes. I'm also trying them on Frozen Brine Shrimp, and live ones once they hatch. (If ya's want info on Breeding Brine Shrimp just and a reply to this message) And I also have 2 Creek Guppies that supply live food every month or so. I have all of these guys and girls in a 4ft tank with a 800L/hr Whisper Power Filter on one end, and a 500L/hr Aqua One Internal Filter on the other end. Last but not least a SICCE Scuba 250watt Heater. And a mixed variety of plants, drift wood and a piece of volcanic rock for the to hide in. Eventually I will have photos to post when I can get a Digital Camera.
  25. we can get clown loaches for around $5 to $10 from our LFS around about 1 to 2 inches in size
