    Reefs Reef Tank

Yes they can, get the correct size reactor. My reactor keeps up and i only have to run it 4 hours a day. It is still not working as i have to get some bits for it . Only have to adjust for a week or two, after that they run fine with keeping up levels.
  2. Maybe Iwan can help as he is the photo shop expert

seems very high calcium levels, maybe that is why the kh is dropping. i would aim for cal of 400ppm.
  6. i found the sohal to be fine if last fish in. add any more fish after and they seem to go nuts.

did a kh/cal test today. kh=5.4/1.94meq/l cal=350ppm added 9 table spoons of buffer and 1 litre calcium kh=8.6/3.09meq/l cal=390ppm. will test tommorow same time and see the levels.
  8. Get professional top up unit. Why risk it all for a mere savings of a few hundred dollars. Tunze do a good unit that has many safety features. They are available at most aquarium stores.

Don’t forget the clams which number over 8, then you have some hard coral which are really big, and then you have a sump full of acros. It all adds up. Can’t think where else it goes. I tested everyday for a week and it drop significantly each day.

Its not going. i have to clean it and add a few bits as too much co2 was going in my tank causing algae, Will have to get on to it as its a pain to add the stuff every day. sure coral growth is ok, there is over 100 acros so that would explain the huge uptake of carbonate.

yep, its a no. Never seen them on a stock list anyway. seen them on web sites in the USA for about $100usd.
  12. Remove more acros. Too many coral will slows your growth. The guys with great growth have hardly any corals. more space means better chance of faster growth, but you will sacrifice some colour as corals cant do both very well as it take too much energy Dieter Brockmann wrote a book Fishes and Corals and found that at a ph 7.7-7.8 lead to immense growth rate in hermtypic corals. My ph is between 7.7-8 and found that i great growth if i keep calcium and kh levels at a consistent rate. like cal at 400ppm and kh 9-10

Its dosing of aragmight calcium. i dose it at night. still cant keep up with kh. tank is too loaded with sps corals. i add about 9 table spoons of kh buffer a day. hard to get & too expensive. over $150 i would say. not on the Maf list.
  14. My levels are fine using ASW. red sea salt. Maybe it is because i feed the fish bananas
  15. If you don’t know about white spot then it is a good reason not to get one. I would leave it until you have 1-2 years experience. Try yellow tangs naso tangs which are hardy fish. It also helps that you tank is well matured as this will mean you have better chance to practice on hardy fish. Powder blues are very aggressive so it would be one of the last fish I would add to a tank.
  16. it might not cause bleaching however it can cause rtn as coral start to eat themselves.
  17. Not at all. happened to me , i put too much rowasphos/carbon in and many acropora went brown. Lost about one coral as i did not do anything rash like do a big water change as this would have stressed them more. just reduced my lights and added amino acids and trace elements which helped them recover in a few weeks.
  18. Then another theory could be that the extra light stressed the coral as they did not have enough food thus had no energy to utilise the light so it stressed them further, carbon would have made it worse as it would have stripped more food out of the water which could reduced the slim coat on the coral.
  19. Yes that is what happened. There is also the possibility of carbon removing the slim coat from the coral which protects them from harmful UV. Too much light can also causes too much oxygen uptake for corals which is toxic to them. Further problems would have be exasperated by doing large water change with NSW as bacteria like vibrio spp. could be the cause of RTN., cant say for sure
  20. that is what they have been saying

Yea it does seem to do something. I dose only once a week as it can cause algae. I only dose 1/2 the reconmendated dose. Dosing at night seems best.

cloudy tank day Goniopora. one year on. gone are the days that you could not keep them Corals are just humming at the moment. light reduction seems to have done wonders. i reduce some lights to 250w. Coral went thru a rough patch a month ago for some reason. all my pocilopora went brown and acros lost a bit of colour. Big changes happened when i started to add some reef booster again. seems i may have been starving my corals.

    Anemones

Damn I can’t find the photos of the ones I had in. they where awesome as I had purple and floro green. Not worth bringing in due to the out cry of fish eating mushroom. Have to protect the hobbyist http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/2-vt16173.html?postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
