    I'm new to this

Hi & welcome     May I ask why you do not have your own fish, couldn't you just ask for a bigger cage to keep at least one little tank in. I mean it is only fair! Sorry to hear about your, ah, impromtu swim. Shame that your care givers DID NOT get a photo, tisk tisk on them. Take care & have fun, Caper PS I'm guessin your little wings won't carry you over here for a visit????
  2. Awesome Heck I think I just asked this in another thread but anyway, I shall ask again. How do you know the males from the females, do you have to wait till their fins grow to know they are males? Caper
  3. Oh my gosh they are beautiful Question, only a few had somewhat shorter fins were they still males whose fins were still growing or were they females??? Caper
  4. Congrats, very nice indeed Is the only way to sex fighters is by their fins, meaning long fins males??? If so, do you have to wait till their fins start to get longer  than the females to know in order to separate them, shoot does that make sense   Hope you understand what I'm trying to ask Caper
  5. Beautiful fishies, love the colors I know that 2 males fighters can't be kept together but obviously you can keep more than one female or is it just till they mature??? You said they thought the white one might have been a short finned male, but will the fins grow? I guess I'm asking...do all male fighters have the long fins? Caper
  6. Dolorosa -means sorrow -Via Dolorosa - Latin for "way of suffering" or "way of grief"; the path that Jesus walked on his way to his crucifixion David wrote: Smart parents! Hated my name growing up, the first day of school was nightmare for me when I had to stand up and say my name, ugh! Although, thinking back nobody made fun of my name that I recall, I was the only one who hated it! Plus it was my second name which caused confusion sometimes...sooo, needless to say all three of my kids had short first names by which they were called and couldn't be shortened, although some people will call Tracy "trace"...grrrrrrrrrr   Caper
  7. Beautiful dogs Ira & livingart Are they as crazy as you two are    I love coming here...can always get a laugh :bounce: Caper
  8. Not that fussy for fish, never have been. The only kind I ever buy for myself is frozen haddock in batter once in a blue moon; will eat halibut; hate salmon; love lobster; deep fried clams, scallops, shrimp...think that's it. Caper
  9. Hi there! Trying to catch up on posts that I've missed. As you can see, people are great here to help. I've been keeping fish for just over 3 years now so still have tons to learn. When I started, went to a pet store (now closed) and was told that the goldfish and the tropical fish I picked out would be fine together...hahahaha. Perhaps because I was new the store keeper thought I'd just end up killing them anyway and didn't tell me the difference. Anyway, trusting what I was told and not even thinking at first about checking the net I came home with my new fish. THEN I found this site and have received an amazing amount of information. OK, back to the goldies. I still have my original goldfish who is now in a 29 gallon tank with one other goldie. I have a hang on the back filter that supposed to be good for 30-60 gallon tanks (at least that's what the info said ). Fortunately (knocks on wood) they seem quite happy and the water parameters are fine. I did have ottos in with them and hope again to have some (hard to get where I live) which kept the algae in check. Normally I do weekly water changes. I don't feed any of my fish on Sunday and Monday the goldies usually get peas. Just in case you didn't know peas are good for goldies (plus other fishies too). I personally don't keep live plants (too chicken to try, plus now that the pet store is closed, couldn't try if I wanted ). Let's see, sorry so long but trying to give as much info on how I take care of Sam & Beauty 8). The filter I have has the bio filter which houses the beneficial bacteria. Once a month when I give the tanks a good cleaning, I save a buckt of tank water and keep the bio filter in there while I'm cleaning the filter. Before I put it back in the filter I "swish" it around in the water to give a little cleaning. The filter I have has a blue mesh mechanical filter pad that has the carbon in it. These I change every 2 weeks (rinse under tap water, then swish in the bucket of tank water). Because the wate supply here has chlorine I add water conditioner when doing water changes. My apartment does have copper pipes. So I emailed the company and asked if the water conditioner made the water safe (re: copper pipes) they said it did and I'm hoping they are correct which must be since no problems that I can associate with copper! Okay, enough for now...truly sorry so long a post but trying to think of things to help. Oh, post pics of your tank sometime. Caper
  10. Me too, I try to keep on eye on the thermometer in the tank too, like was already said. The key here is that as long as you don't make a major temperature change most fishies don't seem to mind. I know that discus requires big water changes but I didn't realize that (or probably read already and forgot  ) that some people were doing big changes on a regular basis. Now, when I get home from Calgary I'll have to do a big water change in my tanks, should I expect a bacterial bloom??? Ira, the 50% water changes weekly does that make your water cloudy??? Caper

    Hi all

Nice pics...what the fishy in the bottom photo...the big guy/gal??? Caper
  12. Well, I didn't see the front of the snail (at pet store) but the shell and I'm wondering if that is what they were because the shell looks identical. They were huge, so possibly this kind of snail...never thought to ask someone what kind it was, duh  Caper
  13. Love your tank setup, really nice looking. The cuteness factor...absolutely adorable Have you had them both since they were small is that why they are such good buddies? Caper
  14. You mention they hide so you have lots of places for them to hide then? Have you added anything new to your tank? Curious as to why your pH would take a drop. Caper
  15. Glad to hear it didn't take so long. I only can dream of having a tank that size Post pics sometime! livingart wrote: Ah, takes you longer because of the extra time to put on your wet suit and snorkel   Caper

  22. Thanks all Yah, love being here, part of my heart will be definetely broken when I have to leave. Back to the pet store yesterday, asked if I could take a pic of the ray but the guy said no pics. Sorry I didn't ask someone else though. What a cool looking "fish?" He/she was really pretty and really neat to watch. Can see why people have them. We went to the zoo the other day. They had around 35 (I think) sting rays die. They apparently had them since February and died in April I think, but from what I've heard they were still trying to figure out what caused the deaths, sad Wish I could take some fish home with me. But now that I think of it didn't see anything for marine, well at least that I know of   They did have a...forget the first part of the name but last part was a gar. Neat to see in person, or should I say in fishy :-? They had a puffer (forget the kind) was sorta hiding in his rocks, somekind of goby, neat looking. Oh, almost forgot, Caryl got some of the triple antibiotic ointment for you. Anyway must scoot for now, Caper
