  1. Update - the first eggs are starting to hatch, spotted a handful of wrigglers in the breeding net, they should have plenty of green water available, as the tank they are in is a bit on the greenish side, adding liquifry too, I'll get a picture up when I can get a good one
  2. my female bronze cat is markedly bigger(approx 20pct) than the other 3 and when she is laden with eggs, you can actually see the bunch of eggs in her belly just behind her fins under the bronze strip along her body. Apart from that, no idea how to sex them
  3. Alas, said Neons have picked off quite a few of the eggs, I've attempted to save the rest via the card method. Got about 20ish in a small breeding net in the tank. hopefully in 3-4 days they will hatch
  4. Laura and I are watching them lay more eggs
  5. my 4 Bronze Cats(1 female, 3 males), have spawned!! Again its the mysterious effect of moving them into a bigger tank, they only went into my 6ft community tank last night to make way for my 4 new plecs(named Death, War, Famine and Pestilence ) in the quarantein tank. They have left eggs in a couple of places on the glass in the tank, anyone have ideas on how to go about collecting the eggs into one place without squishing tem, or is it best to leave them where they are for now? Cheers
  6. map of all tectonic plates in the world...
  7. AFAIK common plecs can reach 2ft (60cm ish), I have one atm and he's 35cm and growing. as for numbers of fish, dunno
  8. Mine is a Male, might be willing to lend him for a bit in return for a few babys later on

  10. lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, not listening lalalalalalalalalalalalalaaaaaa! yes our fish do have some names, All our bristlenose plecs are called gaspode, our 14" common plec is called Dyson, the snowflake BN is called detritus, the 4 big clown loaches are collectively known as Krusty, while the small one is Sideshow Bob. The 20 Neons are all called Nero too. oh and some pesky fish called Nemo who keeps trying to kill me (I'm not paranoid, I know everyone is out to get me) Also a big special hug for Laura who posted in the wrong forum
  11. Gerroff, my pooter!!! don't believe anything she's says about me, I deny everything!!!
  12. /em sticks head into Saltwater room Nuke em from orbit, only way to be sure. /em runs away again.
  13. after browsing the net looking for info on leeches, i can safely assume thats what they are, the question is... how the £$%^ did they end up in my tank? Either a) gravel / bogwood from animates b) Plants from Various people To eradicate them, I'll have to move the fish out of the tank into a new one and dispose of gravel / plants / bogwood from their old tank to make sure no more appear. I think the bogwood is far too dry sitting in animates for cocoons to survive, so guessing my gravel from animates is to blame as that was damp in the bag when I got it. The cocoons take 6-8 weeks to hatch in favourable conditions, which does fit the timeframe for that tank. ho hum.
  14. I found 3 of these 'things' today when unclogging a filter, they move about like a leech, what are they? are they harmful to fish and do I need to exterminate them as soon as possible?
  15. Poor water conditions, you can get test kits for ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate, as well as pH and a variety of others. I assume you know about 'cycling' a tank when setting up a new one. If not, check in the Beginner's forum, bound to be several topics there about it. Sticking your hand in will stress fish, vibrations (banging on glass, having fish next to stereo with loads of bass) will also do it, chasing them round the tank for an hour as they don't want to move to their nice big new shiny tank also stresses them out. Unsuitable tank mates will also cause fish to get stressed / eaten.
  16. Catfish or Plecs are handy, Bristlenose plecs go well with just about anything and help keep your tank clear of algae, corydora's are good, loaches (clown, royal, kuhli) are good, clown loaches especially good for eating snails, and they are quite colourful too. Fish which aren't good tank mates... Aggressive cichlids , most knife fish (except black ghost knife fish), Arowana's, Pacu(Last 2 get to enormous size and outgrow just about any tank you might feasibly own). The general rule of thumb for fish eating other fish is, if it fits into its mouth, it'll eat it.
  17. height 34cm? I assume you meant inches, since 34cm is just over 13" high, very flat tank that
  18. tank is 180cm long by 50cm wide and 75cm high, going to put 20 neon tetras, 5 clown loaches, 4 Bristlenose, 3 zebra danio's, 1 snowflake bristlenose and a 14" common plec in there so far.... frees up 2 smaller tanks for quarantine duties. Still to decide what else will squeeze in there. Got the filter running after much sucking on the water outlet pipe, now I just have to move the tank to another spot as its not sitting flat, its slopes backwards atm
  19. I got myself a Eheim 2028 filter for my shiny new 675L tank, and set the thing up and tried to use the big button on the top to prime the thing, and some water goes up the water inlet and them goes right back down again... Anyone have any tips on getting this thing to work? Any places in the filter where air might be causing problems? Cheers
  20. Split lips or eggs? Well done!
  21. I've taken Dyson out, and put him in a poly box with a filter running in there until tomorrow, checking with dark if he can look after Dyson until I can sort out a new tank for him, can't have Nemo beating him up hopefully someting can get sorted out quickly tomorrow...
  22. And also tell him Alan, Jude and half the FNZAS
  23. Well, Nemo has tried to bite Dyson's fins, anyone got any ideas on how to keep them seperate when there is no tank divider handy? or will making Nemo watch Paris and Nicole on TV3 be enough punishment?
  24. I just tried some cucumber and Nemo 'taste tested' a bit, but he left the other bits alone for Dyson, Nemo also likes to eat spirulina disks as well now
  25. I got a 1300x500x650mm tank plus stand made up for 1100NZD, 423ish Litres from a glazier in Wellington. That should give you an idea of how much to pay, if they quote you 3000 for something smaller than that, tell em to get stuffed.
