I successfully killed about 40 baby bristlenose by incorrectly setting up a trap made from a plastic bottle for them to move them out of the tank they were in. Let's just say that some food in the trap to lure them in and insufficient water flow through the trap overnight is not a good combination.... live and learn.

We've got a few hundred of these in our cichlid tank, you never see more than one or two until the lights go out, then the swarm erupts from the gravel.... good to know they have a good side to them

I'm sorry, but if you're only 14 and haven't got much money, then you haven't got a hope in hell of being able to afford to import anything, never mind rare fish. Nice pipe dream, I'd advise you to start with something a bit more realistic.

Even assuming you get the fish into the country, have you got enough to pay for quarantine? its usually 6 weeks and MAF charge you a packet for the privilige, also, while they are in quarantine, if any die, you don't get re inbursed. I'm not trying to say, don't do it, but go and talk to MAF if you are serious and find out all the costs and permits you'll need before agreeing to get any fish from anyone outside the country. Yes, you could make money doing this, but you'll need a lot of investment and time to make it work, and there is no guarantee that it would work as NZDiscusman can testify too. Good Luck if you do give it a go.

There are only 7-8 importers in NZ who sell to all the Fish shops, and it costs alot of money(and I mean ALOT!) to import fish into NZ, the regulations that are in place are 'impressive' If you want to import fish, have a chat with MAF, they'll be sure to give you all the info you could ever want.

NZ Discus man had some 'issues' with the guy in holland who was going to send some over, and it fell through, I'll let him fill you in on the grisly details.

No and No. They are exceedingly rare, excessively expensive and on the endangered list, the Brazilian govt won't allow their export from the wild anymore. There are 3 in the country to my knowledge and they weren't for sale. Can the mods make a sticky post about zebra plecs being really rare and expensive or add something into the FAQ, I've seen this question asked so many times.

if the NZKA is affiliated with the FNZAS(and I think it is) then you should be a member, Alan will know the answer to that one for certain.

When my Bronze cats go for it, they usually shed 100-150 eggs overnight, rinse repeat every 2 weeks... Dark has peppered cory fry atm, something like 200 or so, I'll tell him to post any useful info you might need.

Regarding Mr Big (80s hair tastic metal band flashback...), common plecos aren't the best choice for cleaning algae, they generally too lazy to keep a tank really clean, you want BN for that. As long as there is a bit of wood for him to munch on, he'll be ok. Don't worry about getting algae levels in the tank up as long as you feed him plenty so he'll grow, he'll do just fine We feed ours on a constant supply of algae discs / shrimp pellets and he loves Courgette / Zuccini and shelled boiled peas. He also eats flake food as well as blocks of bloodworm off the surface which annoys the other fish in the tank no end as its supposed to be for them... Regarding ornaments, - driftwood and rocks only, with at least one bit of driftwood big enough for him to hide under as they aren't fans of bright light and like somewhere dim to sit. Plants are optional as big plecos tend to swim through them and rip them up all the time.

Leave the tank to cycle for a couple of weeks, let the bacteria get established to take care of the amonnia / nitrite / nitrate. If you're fish look happy(when you can see them), then you're not doing anything wrong, don't clean out the filter for a while but do small constant water changes and see how it goes. Only when the filter is running slowly, clean it out. Also clean the piping to / from the filter before cleaning the filter itself and check the water flow, you'd be amazed how much of a difference just doing that can make.

If only we had some space.... Can't squeeze in some more tanks without losing the couch, and I think Laura might object to that

bronze corydoras... how do i breed them
Modern Angl replied to mickey-tropical-fish-mad's topic in Freshwater
I usually leave the eggs for 24hrs for them to harden. Also, from my experience, Bronze Corys aren't egg eaters, it was usually the danio's or tetra's that would pick them off. I now have a 4ft tank set up with 7 adult bronze corys (offspring of original 4 i got, they lay eggs in seperate tank also) who constantly spit out eggs once a week and there are lots of baby fish swimming about in there quite safely. Also got my snowflake BN and about 100 baby Snowflakes in there too. You can tell the male and female part from the size as the females are usually 20pct bigger than the males, assuming same age. They also look really fat when laden with eggs and you should be able to spot the eggs around the underside of her body near the tail through the skin. Watching them spawn is good to watch, they are very active and swim about madly while doing so. -
other version I heard was 'Build a Man a Fire and He'll be warm for the night, Set a Man on Fire and He'll be warm for the rest of his Life' Note - This was an attempt at Humour, I don't condone going around setting random people on fire, unless they really deserved it! ho hum, back to copying all my CDs to computer I guess.....

Bronze Cats AND Snowflake Bristlenoses
Modern Angl replied to Modern Angl's topic in General Breeding
counted min of 20 Snowflake BN, decided it was easier to move the rest of the fish out that community tank rather than find all the babies. Approx 10-15 bronze corys, still not sure of their numbers though. Cheers Alan.
