  1. Assuming a few other folk in Wellington area felt the 5.5 quake just outside upper hutt this morning, how quake proof is the average decent fish tank? (not counting having half the house fall on it...)
  2. Just returned from Animates Wellington with a Eheim 2215 filter, a 300w heater and some other bits and pieces. Question about the filter, is that enough to oxygenate(is that even a word?) the water or will I need a seperate pump for that? Cheers
  3. Not sure yet, I'm doing some research on what fish I can stick in together and then working out how many I can fit into the tank without overcrowding. If folk could make some suggestions of what fish make up a nice colourful tank, would be much appreciated. Looking at a couple of small shoals and a few pairs of fish, plus maybe a few singles for variety... Once I get tank set up, planning on a couple of bristlenose for cycling it for starters. Cheers!
  4. Right, after much discussion with my Better Half about what I want to get aquarium wise, I have a long term plan along of something like this, time and money isn't an issue atm... Tank 1 - Community tank, looking at getting a 122Lx45Wx61D tank(330l ish) as a starter. Will be asking questions galore as I set this up, def. want to do this right first time. Once I have that all running smoothly and fish all happy in that... Tank 2 - Big Fish Tank, looking at getting a sizeable tank and getting a small handful of larger fish, say 4-5, then once those guys are sorted... Tank 3 - Marine Tank, set up a few corals, anemones and clown fish etc, I know this is a far from easy thing to do, hence why I'll give myself plenty time to read up about everything I'll need to know. I'll also look into setting up a turtle tank at some point in the distant future too, but one thing at a time... I'm not planning on doing all this over a few weeks, more like 3-4 years. Better half also wants to breed sea horses at some point too. Considering I haven't got a tank yet, do I sound addicted already??

    Ehoh!

Finally decidied to inroduce myself properly! Originally from the UK, moved to NZ just over 10months ago with my girlfriend Laura and live in Wellington. We decided to start collecting fish after a trip to Picton and a tour around the Aquarium there Cheers! Alan(not to be confused with other Alan who posts here so refer to me using my username )
  7. Thanks for the replies. I'll have a hunt round the glass makers and get an idea on tanks, I have space for something around 1-1.2m in length, height and depth something sensible. I've looked at the beginners guide, very useful I'll post some questions tomorrow once I've had some time to figure out exactly what I want to get. Cheers!
  8. Hi! I've decided to get myself an aquarium, and to be honest, I haven't got a clue. I've been scouring the net for some helpful sites and haven't come across many yet. Where is a good place in and around Wellington to get the supplies required? What should I be looking at for a medium sized starter tank and what heaters/filters/toys are needed so the fish don't die horribly? Whats the best way to set up a new tank? What sort of fish go together well and don't eat each other? If there is a concise idiots guide out there, please point me in the right direction before I go and harrass some poor sales assistant with 3000 questions. Thanks for all the info.
