  1. Here's a pic of the stand I made recently for my 4ftx3ft tank: I used screws and glue to put it together. I put mdf on the top too to spread the weight under the glass, and will eventually put some mdf on the outside to make it look better.
  2. I've had similar experience with Jager, I've only ever owned one and it stayed on and nearly boiled my fish. Same with one that my friend had. I've never had another brand of heater do that.
  3. I was talking to a guy the other day who used to breed them years ago, he recommended using peat in the water too.
  4. I'm actually looking to get rid of one of my dats at the moment Hans - it's getting beat up on by my other one, it's about 8cm. Gimme a PM if you're interested
  5. Lene, have you considered that maybe the heater is keeping the tank at 24 and it's getting heated up further by the sun or just atmospheric temperature? My tanks go up a degree or two in the day, and it's not because of the heater.
  6. Jansens Botany has some Koura at the moment (legally too, I might add) we feed them a mixture of veges - carrots, courgette, brocolli. Like Ianab said, they'll eat pretty much anything they can get.
  7. Tiger Datnoids can be kept successfully with Oscars too.
  8. As the Oscar gets bigger I think you'll find he gets lucky and manages to get a few, if not all, of the tiger barbs and maybe even the convicts too.
  9. Yeah, and it's better to remove the cause of the algae in any case.
  10. It probably has copper in it, which kills invertebrates.
  11. It really depends on the quality of nutrition that the fish gets when it's younger. I've seen males and females that are between 15-20cm, in fact there are a few at Jansens botany in the display tank (they're GBA's, same thing though).
  12. I've bought plants from waterplantz before and I've only gotten one type of plant that's been grown emersed - and it was quickly (in about a week and a half) converted to submersed form once it was in my tank. All of the plants I've got from him are thriving. I'd suggest that the problem with your plants lies in a lack of light/proper nutrients.
  13. I feed mine live bloodworm, live daphnia, live mosquito larvae, frozen bloodworms and a few different types of flake. My oscars and borneo tigers get frozen shrimp, three different types of cichlid sticks, freeze dried krill, freeze dried plankton and white cloud mountain minnows.
  14. I wouldn't risk using dog wormer, vets can usually give you prazi or metronidazole for fish.
  15. Nice looking tank - excellent looking male guppy there too. If you ever need to unload some of his descendants, my tanks are always open
  16. In all probability he's doing this because of the flow of the water. Mine do it too
  17. They'll eat anything that'll fit into their mouths basically. As for snails, you might try Ramshorns. They're not too prolific, only eat dead matter and algae (no plants and no baby fish) and can survive cold temperatures happily. I've got a few in the paddling pool where my wcmm's are at the moment and they do a pretty good job keeping shop. If you decide you want a few I've got plenty to spare Mike.
  18. Those aren't Neon tetras, those are Cardinal tetras. Much more expensive (like 7 - 8 dollars a fish as opposed to less than $2 for neons). So that'll be why they're looking really good The difference is that cardinals are bigger, shinier and have the full red stripe.
  19. I've got a pond with a ton of baby wcmm in it as well, they've got plenty of algae to eat and are growing well.
  20. Picasa doesn't allow hotlinks, unfortunately.
  21. I got mine from Pet Corner in botany originally.
  22. According to the plant survey: Hygrophila lacustris = Blue Hygro Stricta = "Temple Plant" or "Cherry leaf"
  23. Strica's Giant Hygro, I think. I dunno, there seems to be a lot of confusion about the common names of things. The latins are right, in any case.
  24. I've kept them in coldwater indoor tanks before and they've been fine. Dunno about a pond - you might as well try though.
  25. Yeap - there's not much that can stop them in my experience. I've still got descendants of my original plants from two and a bit years ago.
