  1. Maybe there isn't as much food here. It's colder too.
  2. Sometimes this just happens to java fern. I've had it happen several times over the years, both in tanks that are fertilized and not, it apparently just happens. The advantage of having multiple tanks is that you can always just reseed. I'm actually in the process of having it happen to a tank at the moment, it's a 490L tank with a low watt/litre ratio, lightly stocked. Where'd you get the java fern, Captain?
  3. Yeah, it looks like you didn't wash the gravel enough beforehand. Very hard stuff to filter out because it's so fine.
  4. No idea. Can I just ask though, what's a leopard ramshorn?

    firemouths

I can't comment on firemouths, but I once had a 4x2x2ft tank with 2 pairs of convicts and one pair of jewels, all of them spawning at once. It was awesome to watch - each convict pair took half the tank each, and the jewels were squeezed into the middle spawning on a piece of driftwood. So they're obviously ok with each other.
  6. You should just be able to go to your vet and ask for it...at least that's what I did.

    PMDD

Have you considered stocking more to get your nitrate up? Freshwest bought quite a bunch of PMDD ingredients a while ago (as he described it "more than I could use in a lifetime") and was distributing it, that's where I got mine. Haven't seen him on here for a while though.

    PMDD

Not sure if it is or not, but I wouldn't think so since it isn't mentioned in the recipe.

jn, you either want to have some hcl in the mix or keep it in the fridge to prevent the growth of fungus.
  10. The CF1200's on a 490L tank, it does an excellent job. I've also got an Eheim 2010 internal filter in the tank to circulate the water in another corner of the tank, it does 500lph too (apparently).
  11. I've got a CF1200, it's been excellent. Some have problems with the taps, but whoever you buy it off will almost definitely replace them if you do too - they're good filters.
  12. Ferrous iron is excellent for plants though, it's much more usable by them than ferric (Flourish excel's main function is to make iron ferrous). Do something to a couple of birds with one stone - try heavily planting your tank.
  13. Could be a type of bacterial infection that gets in under the skin. If it is, furan 2 will cure it.
  14. Thanks for all your input - I'm set on getting them a breeding tank. Now the only obstacle is convincing my parents to let me get another tank
  15. Easy to catch fish aren't necessarily sick of course, they could just be a naturally easy species to catch or the salesperson could just be skilled.
  16. Dunno about the dosage etc, try searching previous topics/the internet. But yes, the carbon needs to be removed.
  17. It was once suggested on here that sponges could be put around the edges to prevent fish getting stuck and you could even have a powerhead behind it too, so the space behind it effectively acts as a filter.
  18. Thanks dude - I've almost convinced myself into setting up a new 4ft for them
  19. I'm going to come into possession of a breeding pair of port hoplo and am semi-considering putting them in their own tank and breeding them - I'd just like some perspective on people's experiences with them breeding. A magazine I was reading today said they'd want at least a 3ft, preferably a 4ft tank. What size have people bred them in before? I know surface area is critical because so much of it will be taken up by the bubble nest. The fish are fully grown, about 20cm.
  20. The clowns will be fine in your tank, they do grow super slow.
  21. Which LFS did you buy him from Mel? He looks just like an agassizi I had years ago (not suggesting that they're the same fish or anything, it's just cool.) If you manage to get a mate and some babies I'd definitely be interested in getting a few off you
  22. I used to keep a pair of angels in a heavily planted tank, I never noticed any damage - they could have been taking small bites out though. Overall, the answer to your question is no.
  23. Discus tucker is also good because it has garlic in it, which helps protect against parasites (which discus are apparently prone to?)
  24. It'll most likely survive and be able to live perfectly well when it gets bigger. It's amazing the sort of deformities and injuries fish can bounce back from.
