  1. Try Bills salt treatment. it worked really well for my angel who had fungus on his tail> After two treatments fungas gone and tail growing back. One very happy angel.
  2. We have had several breedings now. Give the babies a slice of cucumber or zuchini weighted down. We have also scraped algae from edges of a pond and they love that too. They also like spiralina and shrimp pellets. Keep the tank clean. Found it is probaby best to remove mother as the male will start pestering her and after a couple of breedings we found our female dead and looking the worse for wear. Wouldn't advise any other fish in tank either. Caryl is right they sell them at about 3.5cm but I have found they don't move well even at that size and personally like to buy them at around 4.5 cm but have to pay heaps more.
  3. That has gotta be the photo of the year! Well done. OOps and sorry for your loss.
  4. Is anyone breeding these in Wellington area. Ideally I would love to buy a breeding pair but prepared to raise littlies if need be.
  5. We experienced this recently in a 6ft tank in a cafe. Turned out to be oil from the coffee beans. Added another filter (internal) and problem appears better but still got to go back and check again.
  6. Might be blind in that eye. Perhaps he got attacked by another fish?
  7. Great mag Caryl. Particularly liked Kims and Marks articles. Thank you.
  8. Prefer to position them over the hole on the lid, that way people see the food being dispensed and no dampness gets in, but you always get people that like to fiddle and think the fish are starving - in those cases electric is right, they will go under the lid on the cover plate. The feeder also comes with a block that can be positioned and feeder attached and keeps the feeder in the same position
  9. Oops sorry didn't notice your reply until now. I guess that would be a problem. Most of ours are 100mm from water and the ones that are close can get clogged even with air connected to them (Eheim & Hydor but wouldn't recommend Hydor as most of them crapped out) Is there was anyway you could set the feeder up higher off the lid it may work.
  10. Formalin is cancer causing so I always use gloves. Most goldfish breeders use it. I have been increasing the air too. I have never used it before for tropicals except for the one case of finrot in an angel - should go and check him now that you have reminded me. It was quite hot last summer at times but did not have one incident of white spot. Weird really.
  11. Raising temp is a good idea too. I reckon decide on treatment you are going to use and stick with it. We are having a few problems with white spot in goldfish tanks due to the stress brought on by high temps in Wgtn. We use the formalin & malachite & salt. No food goes into tank until we return 2 days later and retreat. Back again a few days later and gravel vac & water change. The white spot is gone after the first treatment but want to get it out of the water. Also not sure if anyone can buy the formalin. Funny thing is it is not occurring in offices with airconditioning that is on all the time - well logical really. I always thought Meth Blue was just an antiseptic so don't see how it would kill the ich.
  12. Got to disagree, if you have problems a 1/4 cup of salt to around 100 litres will help and in all the time we have been using it, it has yet to cause a death in the bristlenoses we use in every tank. But I guess everyone has their own opinion.
  13. I totally agree with Dark. Take it to a glazier and get it redone, Those hex glass tanks can develop leaks easily and it would be far safer to get it done by a professional.
  14. Wouldn't the gunky thing also have bad bacteria in it. I was guessing it was a sponge and as it is all clogged up anyway and there is bacteria in the water and gravel now I don't think it would do much harm to replace it and would probably help. I feel it is important to have a clean filter when you have disease in the tank. A little bit of salt is OK with plecos but not too much.
  15. We were babysitting a BG. At first I thought he was lovely until he dug up the plants! He hid all day and only really saw him at night. I have seen people put large clear perspex tubing in the front of their tanks for them. I heard they are blind and they go in the tube thinking they are hiding.
  16. Why not start with one and see how it goes. You can always add another later.
  17. I would do a small water change today, replace the gunky thing eith a new one, Is it a sponge? And you could try adding some salt only the loach would not like it too much but might help. (Aquarium salt that is).
  18. I know they are cheap, like old water and angels will quite often eat them !!!
  19. Haven't had that problem before. Have you got the grill at the bottom of the cannister (legs down allowing room for water to come in)before putting in the media? You are right that the inlet isn't overly large but they always work really well and made to fit the hose. Maybe push a bottle brush through to make sure it isn't blocked. Hummingbird the hose does tend to collect algae but they are easily replaced. Eheim hose is available and the filters come with quite alot.
  20. I am using a mixture of formalin and malachite green on an angel with finrot. Began treatment yesterday and another dose today. Also use it for white spot and fungal infections in goldfish with good results. I have been keeping the filters going but removing the carbon. Would be interested to hear how you go.
  21. Hey Steve is home and is quite happy to talk you through procedure, I made a couple of errors in 1st post. Don't hesitate to ring you are most welcome. Steve has used these filters every day for the last 10 years.
  22. You know I would be worried about strain on the motor. It should fire up straight away. Something is not right.
  23. Is the air down that end of the tank? If so that would create the splashing. Maybe change feeder position to the other end of tank. I have found that eheim feeders will clog up with dampness but atleast you can run an airline into the eheim feeder to take care of that problem.
  24. Although our tanks are internally plumbed, I don't think there would be any difference. The seals stay on in the new models so vaseline should not be required. I hope you have got the taps turned on, they should be in an up and down position rather than to the side. Here we go in plain english LOL: Connect hose to the bottom outlet and plug in. You will hear the water going into the filter. Have a bucket ready and place thumb over end of tap connected to the top of the filter for a few seconds. This will help get the air out. Aim the hose into the bucket and the water should start pouring out. This will also get rid of air. Turn off tap and connect to hose. Simple. If it is noisy it may still have air in the filter. You can shake the cannister back and forth a few times and the air should connect. There should be no problem with the impellor or shaft in a new filter. Be very careful when you go to clean this area out in a few months time that you don't break the impellor. They are made of ceramics and break easily. They are really the only thing that may need replacing over the next twenty years. If you have any more problems give Steve a ring on 0800 347 443. He will be home in about half an hour.
  25. We set the Nutafin over a cutout in the lids so no problems.
