  1. Cover the tank with a blanket for 3 days (no light) and water change every 2-3 days. Is the tank located in a very light area?

    Fluval Filters

I went to a product launch 2-3 months ago. The packaging has been improved (they raved on about that for ages)and checking out the catalogue, they say that the motor is sealed in epoxy resin that resists high temps. Larger magnetic coil provides increased power that results in improved priming and air evacuation. Also a self flushing impellor well helps keep impellor cool and free of debris. I think they also improved the intake strainer. The only one that looked really impressive was the new FX5 (1500l/h) which pumps 3,500 l/hour. But imo you can't beat an Eheim Classic!
  3. Why not get in touch with the local council biosecurity unit. As they are a pest fish they may be able to help you.
  4. Thanks Rob, fish fine again today and I think I will keep taking our own water - easier really.
  5. Well visited today and the fish that are left are a lot happier. That formalin/malchite mix did the trick. Took a couple of buckets of cycled water with us and did a water change and will add carbon to filter later in the week. Will keep checking this week as we really want to add extra fish soon.
  6. Sounds like males to me. Ich is more like salt shaken over fins and tail moving to body as it get worse. If you are going to raise PH it should be done very gradually. Baking soda will do raise PH too but I am inclined to agree that if they are used to that PH don't change it.
  7. Only 3 fish left (4 dead). Will check my kit and see if it does copper and definitely taking water from home on Monday. Filter did have carbon until Friday when we removed to treat with formalin and malachite green. Will be replaced Monday providing fish are not showing signs of illness. The tank is still in the process of cycling but we set up heaps of these tanks and have never lost a goldfish in that process before as we visit the tank regularly to do maintenance in that first month. It is really hard to know what the pipes are. The building doesn't look more than around 20 years but as I said the taps hadn't been used for quite some time. Will update Monday night. Oh and Blue, the poly boxes are no problem infact they are mounting up again!
  8. Recently set up a 100 litre hex tank and fish added 11 days ago. Slowly the goldfish have been dying despite water changes etc. Tried Melafix but no help. The fish look really healthy but suddenly drop off. Customer mentioned this morning that the building had been vacant for a while and that he was getting a water filter for the staff as it tasted bad. PH is normal and have been using cycle and also salt. Today I treated with formalin and malachite green which perked the remaining fish up. Two days after the fish were released the water went cloudy and no it definitely was not overfeeding. Any ideas on what I should test for in the water as I have never seen this happen before? Plan to revisit Monday and take water with us.
  9. Only just saw this post sorry. We polish out scratches with wet and dry sandpaper only when scratches are deep enough to catch on your finger nail. Then you can use brasso and lots of elbow grease! Another alternative is to get hold of a buffer and buffering compound and once again it will take a bit of time but will come out like new.
  10. Nutamatic feeders have been replaced with Nutrafin Profeed which in my opinion are not as good. The problem with auto feeders are that they are so expensive and Eheim put out the best but you are probably looking at around $120. I would suggest you purchase some small sealable plastic bags and make up individual feeds. That way your friends can not overfeed.
  11. Brooklands, who are located in New Plymouth, send their fish with Fastways.
  12. I would have thought the importers would have helped out with this. Aterall it is in their best financial interests surely?
  13. Don't let Biosecurity know about the hornwort - it is highly illegal!
  14. One of our HR1280's was doing the same around the plastic. Sealed it, dropped level slightly and ran some black tape under the plastic on the outside to cover lower water level. There was definitley a fault in that model.
  15. Just got back from collecting 7 buckets of gravel from the beach. We use it all the time with no problems. Give it a good wash first.
  16. We quite often get spawning when new fish go into the tank. Sounds like your black moor is a girl and the two chasing her are boys. On the odd occassion we have had to remove the poor exhausted female. Keep an eye on her. They should stop within a couple of days.

    In Wall Tank

A ladder, magnet and planting stick. Not a problem at all.
  18. Wish I could help but I have no idea. We manufacture hexagonals and I think each face is only about 40cm across (from memory). You could try getting in touch with a business that manufactures acrylic products but I really think you will have to go for at least 10-12mm. Apparently the price has gone up with the oil prices by about 30%.
  19. Hi debs, We operate an aquarium rental business and over half the tanks have tropical fish and a heater. The acrylic is 6mm thick and the heaters have never caused any problems. The wider each face of the tank is the thicker the acrylic will have to be and that could be costly!

    any preference

We have been using Aqua One heaters for the last 2-3 years. Perhaps out of 60 heaters we have had to send a couple back.
  21. Don't worry Melanie, just leave them to hatch. Shouldn't need anything special for eggs - we have them hatch regularly in similar positions. Our tanks are clean and they still survive - you will probably get more than you want anyway.
  22. Hey Paul, can't help you with the babies except to say I have had bristlenoses raise another pairs babies. I honestlly don't think kribs would kill other fish. We have kribs breed in our hexagonals (and that is a smaller space than a 2ft. They chase everyone away but never kill anything and from time to time a few of the babies even survive! By the way, the kribs we got off you are doing well.
  23. He is probably trying to get out to lay eggs which they place out of the water. Snails are scavengers and will eat any leftover food on the bottom of the tank, I have also noticed that they love slices of courgette.
  24. Wow Klaymann you certainly are creative. And the photography is great too! Do you do aquariums as a business as I have been having a few calls from people up your way and would be happy to recommend.
  25. The only way to get silicone to adhere to acrylic is to use Fosroc Sealer No 9. Apply, leave 20 mins and then silicone. Done this hundreds of times and it works well, only problem is the primer is expensive around $30 and it would probably be cheaper to replace tank.
