  1. do you think a large ish fire eel will eat a small clown loach?
  2. from 2 mins and 35 seconds in, the eel comes out to feed. this was 6 months ago, it wasnt 50 cms here, it was more actually (im bad with sizes) the height of the tank is 72 cms. now, the diet of this fella (ERNIE) is his name, named by my female, is raw shrimp, beef heart. when he comes to feed, hte over laps the bottom of the tank, i estimate he is 75 cms ish now. i would love a large fire eel.
  3. i find it doesnt kill most fish, but with eels others have given same feedback that cooked prawn does. in my experience too, after a few weeks on the cooked stuff they get blocked up. My guess is that the structure of the flesh changes when cooked, becomes harder and perhaps harder to pass. traditionally meat and other flesh is easier to digest when cooked, but i guess fish may be different, it gets harder its a theory i have tested in the past - through trial and error and someone overseas have told me also they had problems, and when i stopped, my eels lived, i had a 60cm eel that is now 73 to 75 cms now, all on raw prawn and raw beef heart. but, some may disagree, does anyone here feed cooked shrimp to eels with great success? there was a person here wtih a massive fire eel awhile back, it died too i believe and it was on cooked seafood. but i guess i have no solid scientific evidence with it, the end of the day, its up to the owner i guess. just conveying what i found to work for me. 8)
  4. yes they are rarer even, are albino ones, google it awesome!! pure white animals!
  5. the thing fraser is that i think they are so ugly, they are awesome! i know you dont like that, but they are ugly, and really quite unappealing in alot of ways and i thin thats what makes them novelty. plus they get huge and look disgusting when older, awesxome!!
  6. raw prawn will be taken by your eel wiht in days of not feeding bloowworms. stop feeding BW, and after 3 days of trying you should get it to eat RAW shrimp DO NOT FEED cooked pink shrimp. it will kill it. raw prawns only or fish fillets, raw calamari. basically raw seafood. feeding depends on hunger/apptetite and temp of water. if your water is around 27 to 28, then just feed as much as it eats really as long as your filtration is good. if its lower temp, dont feed so much, because the prawn will rot inside and will block it upand kill it. i have had bad luck with eel until recently, and after experiments and opinions of people overseas - cooked food kills them. blood worms also dont have much nutrients, you have to feed so much for them to get full and get the good stuff. so really, you can stunt your fire eel by feeding bw
  7. call around hollywood fish farm is my first bet, ask if they have someon the list. they are relatively available and common, nothing too hard to come by. just timing really. call them and ask, awsoem fish! grows rapidly! mine grew about 1.5 to 2 inches a month!! will et anything, dont splash out on expensive food on them, no point, i have had 3 in the past - just guy the cheap aqua one economy stuff, good value and cheap. no point of feeding really expensive food. Or een carrots or peas
  8. agree ay, puffers are killers! they have awsome beaks. I have an arrowhead puffer once - man, it chomped gold fish! folded them in half! it would eat shrimp like it wasnt even there, it had the best eating style out of any fish i have ever had!!!! I wish we could get MBU puffers
  9. i love both but GG (Giant gouramies) are extremely problematic, They are violent and robust. Most robust than an aro. IN fact i had one that gave a 40 cm jar a run for its money!!! Stories of GGs eating the eye balls of aros and other fish are common on MFK. but if you are choosing one or the other... well it coesm down to pros and cons only you can decide aros are more majestic - but more expensive, aros are really a trophy fish for me. GG are cheap and easy to care for, robust and really EATS ANYTHING! but end of the day, what do you like more - reason i ask is that you cannot have both in the same tank. Your chances of success is small and if you do want to make it work, a very very large tank with lots of fish is the way to go. I mean lots of fish that willd istract both fish!! I would go arowana, but then aagain they are my obsession 8) but gg are cool too! and they chase your fingers - and they eat lots which is cool.
  10. fluval and eheim - always going to be more reliable. I have a fluval 404 i have had it for years, and never had ANY problems, not even parts or even the rubber seal has not been replaced, still going strong. they are awesome. aqua one i hear is good, but what i find is that when you have cheaper chinese copies..... the plastic is not as good, its CRISPIER and more brittle. the hose clamps are also weak and break easily. Eheim or Fluval.... do nto break, you have to go out of your way to break them! fx5 is fantastic, im a fan, in fact i have 3!! 2x fluval (304 and 404) and a cheap chinese one that has broken many times and is there only because its 8 watts of power so i keep it running. the build quality isnt that good on cheaper chinese copies. you will notice the trays will not fit flush with each basket, or the fitting in side the canister just isnt that good. you may think its irrelevant but if 10% of flow isnt directed correctly, thats 10% of performance. i guess if you apply the: V8 super car approach where you have a poorly built car, it does the job, goes fast but really not harnessing everythig you can out of a vehicle OR Formula 1 approach where each horsepower is key, eash millisecond is key..... fluval and eheim is that. The trays fit well, flow may not be as dramatic say to cheaper chinese copies - but your filtration is better anyway. go the better brand, you wont get support for getting cheaper online ones. LFS make our hobby continue
  11. cool fish needs good filters, big tank, and if you buy one, ask shop keeper to feed pellets, buy the one that eats pellet.s they grow 3 times as fast, LITERALLY fed pellets. when they read 8 inch plus, you can feed pellets and prawn even beef to save cost. but if you feed just prawn (make sure its raw prawn) you will slow its growth and at times result in stunting.
  12. also water change regime if the water cools down too much, it will retard the metabolism of fish, which in turn can turn food in their stomach to rot and cause problems.
  13. i ry not to feed shrimp. i hear bad things abou them pellets is veges. mostly pellets. deisgned to be digested easily. even higher protein pellets are designed to be absorbed and flushed out quickly. natural meat can be difficult to digest. I feel only pellets for myplecs. i had one that had a swollen belly, from indigestion i believe. also watch the water temp. the water may be too hot? small tank like that, water quality may e my first pick, or injury from fighting? hard to say. but suffice to say, your tank is small. i would hold off any plecos untill the tank is biger.
  14. that looks like a pacu pacus are bred in captivity easily enough for food i am unsure if someone will go through the trouble of finding hundreds of baby pacus none the less.
  15. i guess my mix is different. i make mine more meaty than vege. maybe the beef heart i put in helps bind too? i notice shrimp is sticky but yeah, what ever works i guess.
  16. if you are makin an all vege mix, then you really do need a binder. agar or gelatine is fine. marrow should be ok, ist like a giant courgette rigth? i just use courgettes, spinach, banana. if you dont have any prawn, then use a binder, if you use prawn, you shouldnt need it.
  17. no need RAW shrimp will keep it all together. no need for gelatine. i make my own food too, raw shrimp is really good for keeping stuff together. spirulina is fantastic full of goodness! veges can be put in too.
  18. depends on tank volume and stocking and type of fish. generally i reckon canisters are great. but if its small - lightly stocked, nothign wrong with a hang on filter
  19. honestly, if you have good filtration, thereis not much harm in feeding a lil more. of course not to the point where food sits for ages and ages but if your aro wants to eat 3 prawns instead of 2, do it! dont taper its growth by underfeeding and regulating its feeding. remember in the wild, they eat all day through out the day during the day. kinda grazing for things floating and things they can catch. also, i find filters tend to (to a certain extent) grow in capacity to the feeding you do. if you feed heavier, filters get stronger and get more bacteria. bacteria are fed by the waste. more waste they grow more bacteria (to a certain degree)
  20. i dont believe there is proven solid reasons scientifically why DE happens. to be honest, who cares in nature, silver arowanas get drop eye. its actually a natural accurence in some cases. perhaps it comes from hunting for food not just from thetop but bottom fo the river too. who knows. as for apptetite, feed a lil more so longa syour filters can handle it
  21. my adult rtg does not jump must at all if any. jardinii only when hunting for food from my hand, as soon as i put my hand close to the tank, it will jump to get it, very agro the black, sometimes i think it does i see scales missing once in a while but hardly. with aro, i find that obsuring the back and sides is key. they dont jump much after that. if they get frights they jump if they see an insenct on top of the tank, they will go for it. even a pellet, they will think is food
  22. yeah they fast for no reason that i can see my rtg sometimes fast for 2 days, but recently, it has not fasted for more than 1 day at a time. it ate a clown loach awhile back and injured itself i believe, didnt eat for almost 2 weeks, but ate again after. black arowana east daily with out fail. but jar eats like a maniac! jar eats so much. never had a green sorry. but davids was fat and huge! sturdy fella. and not agro or anything, quite timid and very well balanced. the jar killed a spotetd metynnis but leaving the other alone.
  23. haha no room for tanks and saving for wedding so not for a while yet. i was telling david the other day, i went through a moment where i thought that i would sell most of my fish and put the money for one red aro but i really cant do it, i enjoy having the different aros!! i am sorting out feeding costs though, its starting to get ridiculous. i wills till feed pellets to clown loaches but i think i will stop with the aros now they are all in a good size shrimp is so much cheaper and i found that growht from small is great with pelllets, but when they are all almost adults, the growth tapers and becomes the same anyways. red will come eventually.
  24. `funny i have a jar, rtg and Black aro. the black aro will eat until satisfied, the jar is never satisfied and will eat untill its belly literally looks like its gonna explode. it will keep attacking food non stop. rtg will eat 1 or 2 shrimp. the jar, less than half its size will eat as much food if not more! the black will eat less than the jar - interesting to see how different they are
  25. yeah no problems with eheim, in fact i wish i had more money for them:D but i guess just value for money, i reckon fluval fx5 wins. also i have heard that the thermo eheims are not as reliable as they could be? dont know, but its awesome in concept. too bad that they only have 300w. kinda stupid as the filter is designed for a bigger tank needing more than 300w lol
