  1. do you have to refrigerate it? or can you just keep it dry? this si important i believe.
  2. ok, that sounds good. just wanting an explanation why a higher hatch rate if its a upside down coke bottle than not? water turbulence is key here. that seems to be achieved by both also the hatched shells float so that makes no diffrence just like to understand this
  3. sorry, EXCLUDE AIR? ... so size of shrimp when hatched. whcih one is beter? what brand should i get for goos results or is it a matter of, just hatch more to get more. if one brand has less hatch rate, then have more set ups? to make up for the loss. and if shrimp is smaller, then feed more shrimp to compensate for smaller shrimp?
  4. Which one is beter? or same? Or any brand that is better than the above? what is the difference in good nesS? the above are pretty well priced. also, storage of these eggs? does it have to be fridge? or jsut dry?
  5. no one does it often because it may not be worth brining in new species. not a big enough market. also when they do, its bred locally and importation becomes useless. only species that cannot be bred are big and sometimes not a.llowed in anyways.
  6. why cnt i just get a coke bottle, dont cut anything and chuck an air stone in there, turn it on .... why does everyone recommend upside down system? makes it more simple.
  7. i have seen these set ups in other peoples fish rooms with no heater in them. but the room is warm can i rely on ambient temps? does it have to be 24c? or else it wont hatch or will it hatch just slower? how much light does it need? ambient light? or does it need a beam on it, like a fluro bulb beside it or something?
  8. im looking at some set ups. upturned coke bottle with lid on, do i have to drill a hole on the lid or can i just sink an airstone from the top side ?
  9. hi all i have gottenoffers from a few very generous people to sh ow me hot to set up the coke bottle hatchery. unfortunately i dont hve the time to visit for now, wondering, if someone out there can just give me a couple of pics... and instructions on what ot do, i know its relatively simple. just to tell me what to do and how to set it up. also in there, how often do i change the brine water? - i mean if i put say brine in the coke bottle thing, how many batches of shrimp can i hatch from that? \does it go off quickly? this just tells me how many bottle set ups i need to keep a sustained population of food going until the babies can eat pelleted food and beef heart mix.
  10. got a tall narrow pot, $4 no hole its for indoor teracotta. sterilised it with boiling water, will put in tank today
  11. yeah seen those too. but willa pot work? or beter to have more flow in the middle i guess. pots are way cheaper, 3 to 5 dollars lol i guess i could get scrap tiles. and a small tube of silicon will a pot work?
  12. hope not the heater, i dont want poached eggs:D the side of the tank is all good, might stic,k to the pots cheaper
  13. ok. looking for breeding cone for discus. saw jbl at the lfs, 30 bux. ok......i for some reason feel rather sick when i think of this money spent on the cone. does anyone know where to get cheaper ones? that does the job, it seems like a normal cone. or does anyone have a couple to give or sell cheap? OR beter yet can i just get a call teracota pot and turn it upside down? or will the hole on top of the pot gather badness?
  14. female is eating progressively more. can now see bumps in belly after feeding times. poo looks healthy too. very solid poo reflecting the colour of what it eats the day before
  15. these meat mixes are just beef heart, or veal heart. but veal heart is costly here. usualy they are beef, liver wtih vits and shrimp. thist stuff is good for your fish, but if you dont have mega filtration, dont feed too much at a time, make suer its eaten with in 10 mins max. otherwise your water will get messy. i h ave found this recently and had to taper back my disgustingly large amoutns of feeding with my own beef heart mix
  16. yeah, i heard many good things about it also from breeders themselves. reviews also. the bio load is only 2 adult discus for breeding. the tank will also have a daily water change of at least 30% maybe more to ensure top water qual. thanks for the feedback guys
  17. lol 14 to 18 a pop for the big ones, not worth the hassle for me:D that doesnt make me NOT a cheap asss though lol im some respects i am! practically cheap though:D pragmatic is the key word lol looks like im gonna get some, very good and practical solution - i dont have room or wanna get mroe powe canisters, and if its not neccesary, then they are a life saver! ill inoculate the sponge in my mature tank set ups, perhaps put the clogged filter wool over it to implant some bacters
  18. what sort of bio filtration do theyd o? do they need like 100% water change daily to actualy work? say a pair of discus - i have seen them in breeders tanks heaps, but how much water change do you need to do. and feeding parents, they need to eat a reasonable amount to sustain energy and nutrients to lay, fertilise and care for babies. feedback? say, breeders here of discus, how many % wc on your tanks with pairs.
  19. http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com ... ation.html the link, i see many many breeders use only this. in all their tanks. wow, i think to myself, do they work? any feedback? to calm my weariness? lol its for my discus breeding tank. should i use this and a inernal? or just a couple of this? is there really enough surface for bio load bacteria to grow? or do i have to do a 100% water change a day wtih these filters?
  20. yay both eating! the male snow leopard is starting to be a pig. female is eating, small chunks for now but they tend to start picking at smaller chunks untilt hey get used to the food. female eating now, small bumps of food in its belly after feedings.
  21. small discus are abit mroe sensitive. they can be finicky i notice and more shy. adults though, are hardy, when they get to adult size - i find them hardy, so long as they dont have diseases. my school of 18 adults 2 mediums = 20 total are pigs, and when i come to the tank, they all swarm up! i love seeing a 20 strong school feed lol i have 7 juvies too, they are in a grow out tank wtih my black arowana. i find if you want to make sure you dont stunt them, adults is the way to go, there are a few on trademe.
  22. the temp is not up to scratch yet, i had to pump a lot of water today cos the auto changer pump broke down for 2 days so had to replace som water to reduce nitrates. when i looked last it was 27.2, target temp is 29 ish. during summer, heaters always off. ill see
