  1. I went to get some NSW today and was a touch early, so I was playing around in the old rock pools. (by the way, some of these pools must have been 32 degrees I reckon). Well......looked under a rock and found a NZ pistol shrimp. Didnt know they existed here, but read up online and decided to thrown him in after careful acclimatising. I only had a plastic screw jar in the car, so I threw the screws on to the passenger floor and filled it to 3 quarters. I also added a crab which I hadnt seen before and put him in the jar too. I heard loud clicks and realised that maybe this was a pistol shrimp getting agitated. POWERFUL CREATURES, HE PUT A HOLE IN MY PLASTIC JAR, I COULDNT BELIEVE IT! REAL LOUD TOO! screw jars are quite thick too...amazing. Im not sure if he will survive my tank or cause me grief, but I couldnt resist putting him in!!
  2. must be in your tank Layton.....needs removing.
  3. You mean Ben didnt Quarantine his fish....silly boy.
  4. SOME FISH ARE ONLY "ICH" MAGENTS IF THEY ARE CARRYING IT, OR IF YOUR TANK IS A CARRIER. IF NOT, THEY WILL NOT GET ICH. I AM GOING TO PROVE THIS OVER THE NEXT 6 TO 8 MONTHS. WATCH THIS SPACE!!
  5. Hey Rossco, Are you feeding the Tangs Nori sheets everyday or two? I think you'll find the roughage from Nori will push anything through their system. I feed Nori every other day. they love it. Quite an important food source for them. you can get it from your local chinese goods shop for next to nothing.
  6. Importers bring fish in to the country and QT them as much as possible. If you rely on their QT's and LFS's for protection you are a fool. they are turning over large numbers of fish all the time and cannot completely control all diseses. If you let a parasite in your system it is your own fault. Your own QT is the only way to guarantee it. I have learnt my lesson after losing 4 fish to the disease. (90% my arse)!!! Shit happens.
  7. i dont think the fish will be ok Fay.....
  8. Layton, you are wanted here my man....wadda you think?

    Ich

Ich doesnt just appear out of no where unless you have put a piece of rock, coral, fish or something in the tank or sump/s. either you added it or your tank is carrying it.
  10. the law of physics states that 8000liters per hour, (or other litre per hour pumps), will require certain energy sources. there may be minor differences in wattage for similarly powered pumps , but who cares......get a eheim1262 or a big Laguna! they rock!
  11. interesting stuff...... what made you want to cut him open?

    sand

I think it will still leach silicates in onme form or another which in turn will turn into silicic acid causing diotom blooms. I wouldnt use it, it may also leach Iron which is not in a natural reef environment. Coral reefs are used to being around coral sand , like snapper are used to hanging around at rangitoto island! Best to keep them where they belong IMO, that way you know you will be all good. just my opinion. each to there own!

    sand

Im running a 50/50 mix and it looks like coral sand to me.
  15. The life cycles of Ich and VELVET are about the same, so as long as you treat for Ich, thats as much as you can do....dont see the point of sending fish off for checking when the cysts are so visable and obvious. just a matter of dealing with it.
  16. Luckily Mr salifert does the three main ones. So I dont think it really matters. I havent lost 90%, probably 25%, but still enough to piss me off. which other tanks apart from Ben? I am seeing much better results already. Large female Tomato is eating again and she is looking like she will pull it off.
  17. Whats the point of that for? the fish have spots on them..... going to be one of the parasitic diseases.
  18. take off the hoseclip, remove the pipe and place it in a jug of boiling water. whilst hot push the pipe back on and crank the hoseclip VERY tight whilst soft. will not leak after that....they are meant to be extremely tight. Oohh...and you want 2 x clips for each connection...one to back up the first one. for the sake of 4 bucks its worth it, trust me.
  19. spots are receeding as per expected.... Tomato looking a bit more promising. Tangs spots have reduced alot. all good so far.
  20. Joe, i think as in"911" quick ring the doctor....... you know.....i think you both got it wrong! the towers were taken down september 11.
