I understand, it's just that i was under the assumption that the female would only start her part in the process if there was a male that fit the bill/some kind of "courtship" Does this mean that the whole thing is random - for whatever reason the female gets full of roe, drops the eggs, and then a male goes "hey!! eggs!!" and goes off to fertilise them?

Thanks fishboi, it's such a drastic change (for me) in just a few months, i'm really pleased. Yeah i noticed that on the sides of the shell, wasn't sure if it was normal. Will that sort itself out as he grows? Or is the damage done? He is now fed sometimes with store-bought frozen turtle food (when i'm lazy - i think it's the one made by hothouse turtles or similar? i buy it from HFF Mt Roskill), and when i'm on top of things i blend ox heart and lots of veges and sometimes banana together, then freeze it in little chunks. He also gets Wardley turtle pellets and a few Hothouse Turtles river shrimp at each meal.

Oh yeah - i took over some printouts of smaller fish for them to have a look at, and two of the oscars came up to say hello. They've got such charachter, but i think if i brought a tank that size home, my partner would decide i can live in it too The owners don't have a clue, so i gave them some photos and info and told them to have a think about what they want to do. She wants me to source smaller fish, and do a trade rather than buy the oscars and her have to get new ones. They've asked if i can go over after work, remove the oscars and set the new fish up, so that they don't have an empty tank when they're open. See how we go

Hi guys, one of my female rosy tetras is looking a little guilty... and as well as that, she's beefing it up: All of a sudden (or at least i haven't noticed it before) she's got this big body - and her tummy sticks out to the sides as well. It's more obvious than it looks in the one clear-ish shot i got of her (sorry for the silly snap-cut-and-paste job!!) Could she be pregnant? I haven't looked into breeding them at all so no clue!! There are 9, about 50/50 male/female, in the planted community tank.

I got my turtle in early Feb, and when i got him his shell was a mottled bronze/black colour with hardly any markings (stripes etc), as shown below: From about a month/6 weeks ago he has been slowly shedding his shell, and it was looking very dark/black underneath. But that dark colour is developing into a greeny colour, and markings are developing. This pic is from tonight, with flash: Question being: is this ok - is this normal/healthy? He had some little spots of soft shell when i got him (about pin-head size or smaller - you can see in the first pic) that are gone now. But all this shedding and colour change has me worried... It looks healthy to me, but i could have no idea. Hopefully the pics can help any turtle buffs out there shed some light for me

one of my kuhlis likes to half bury himself, so just the tail is sticking out of the gravel. he'll sit there for ages while the others nosey around him Looks very odd
