  1. Well, you can tell most of the time once the boys fins grow out and get all pretty , but you're pretty safe if you keep an eye on them and watch for when they start getting nippy. I've got 6 juveniles that are showing great colours, and i'm 90% sure on genders, but they haven't started showing any aggression yet, so i'm keeping them in together for a bit longer (they've got a massive tank, so maybe that's why they're not so territorial yet), but keeping a close eye on them!!!!
  2. Thanks for the tip about the smaller ones. Yep i'll be all set by the time they're at the age to separate the boys. Will post a pic of dad soon
  3. http://www.fightingfish.com.au/forum/vi ... .php?t=117 Here are my 3 week old fry. Got about 140 that i've managed not to kill so far (I transferred them to a bowl, so yeah i took the chance to do a rough count  ) They're around 6mm long, some a bit smaller (is this a normal size? My first lot so not sure if they're normal or stunted...) Some are starting to show red like their dad (he's a bright bright red veil tail), and the bright blue female shown is mum. Ooohh so exciting....... *squirms* Just thought I'd share with u guys
  4. I did a search, and came across a forum thread where someone else saw some in the same shop in 2003 Had a look and they were the same as the ones i saw, see link below: http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Species ... vancoricus They're so cute! Only little 'uns, gonna learn as much as i can and as soon as i find one.......... BAM!!! I'll have it, moahahahaha!!! Seriously tho, look at him!!! Awwwwwwwwwwwww!!!
  5. oh, P.S. Would need to either be in auckland or even within a couple hours drive from auckland. Would just have to be nice and carefull getting it home........... Thanx!!!
  6. Hey guys, does anyone know where i can get a freshwter pufferfish? Preferably a young one. I saw them in at Hollywood Fish Farm Mt Roskill (didn't get one then, could just shoot myself now!!!) and have been calling them religiously but no luck so far. They're just so darn cute!!! Why do i always love the aggressive, bad-ass fish? Any help much appreciated!
  7. I'm sure that's just a trick the males play so that you buy them a whole harem "No i don't like her, go get some more..." My first girl was way too young, so glad i realised (finally - what a newbie!) and it's worked out. Good luck with yours!!!
  8. oh yeah, have read up on the breeding and raising the fry, and pretty sure i've got it down, fingers crossed, but one thing i don't think i've come across - how long until the eggs hatch?
  9. thanks. oh yeah, definitely want to show off my little triumph!! Just had a bit of a fright - daddy was grabbing eggs from the edge of the nest and swallowing them, and he wasn't putting them back so i thought he was eating them. Then after about 30 secs he went under the nest and i saw him gulp this clump of eggs out of his mouth and into the middle of the nest instead. Scared the beejeebees out of me. Good thing i waited and watched before taking him out - i guess he was just securing any that might have detatched from the edge. Will post photos as soon as they start showing some colour, and will let u guys know if any other little stories result as well
  10. YAY!!! My boy was being so uncooperative, and was just ignoring his first girlfriend, but as soon as i showed him a different girlie, POW! he was zooming around and flaring and doing a little twirly dance in front of the divider. It was soooo funny! I let them in together 2 days ago, a day or so ago we had a nice bubblenest, and i came home today to find little white jelly eggs sitting in there. Have taken mommy out, dad was chasing her away and nipping her, and he's been so good, picking up stray eggs and putting them back. It's so exciting! And he's doing so well for a new daddy (til he tries to eat them of course ) Just wanted to share my excitement with you all - Dad's a bright red veiltail and mum's a bright blue/violet colour, so it'll be fun watching the bubbas colours develop. Ciao!
  11. Hey guys - quick note for all the help with my ealier post (HELP! Worried about my siamese fighting fish!!!) - Enzo is looking fab still, his fins and tail are gradually getting better and better, so thanks again for your prompt responses. The matter at hand: I have six juvenile fighters that i bought from a breeder a few weeks ago, 5 are about 1.5-2cm long and one is half that size. They're from the same clutch, and are staying together til they can be sexed. Tomorrow morning i'm getting my first adult female - i know my boy would eat the juvies, and he's being kept separate from other fish for a while anyway, until i know he's all healthy again, so she can't go with him, so would a female be alright in the same tank as the little guys til they grow up? Thanks
  12. Hey guys, does anyone know any NZ clubs or associations, or also any NZ online groups specifically for fighting fish/betta enthusiasts? I'm not planning on scarpering from here But would like to be involved in anything i can that's local or in NZ and more specific to my new obsession
  13. Yeah yeah! :bounce: This may be a bit premature, but I got rid of the fake plant and got some real ones, and currently treating Enzo with Melafix - and already his white fluffy spots are gonnnneeee... and the edges of the tail aren't looking as weird and fragile as they were. This whole time his mood hasn't changed a bit - still spunky and active, but now he's looking better as well. Fingers crossed that i'm spot on and he'll be right as rain soon. Then it's just a matter of waiting for his beautiful tail to grow back to its former glory. Will post if there's anything to add, but looks like it's going to be a happy ending, thanks so much for the advice, i wasn't aware water changes were as often as once a week! It's been a valued lesson . Thanks again!! Regards, Jo
  14. Awesome, will do and will let u know how it goes fingers crossed!!! THANKYOU!!
  15. Looked on the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals website, It sounds like either fin/tail rot or fish fungus, maybe i've been overfeeding and it's tainted the water? I'll call Hollywood fish farm tomorrow and see if they can help, and will get to a store tomorrow also, maybe they'll know. What should i try first, and how long before it should help? Oh man, how will i know? I think it's fish fungus - symptoms of white growths on fin or body is an accurate description of Enzo's tail, where the symptoms for tail rot has the ragged fin, but doesn't mention the spots, just says may be white around tail edges...... The site said to use PimaFix or Fungus Cure for fish fungus. Course of action asap tomorrow - what do u think i should go for?
  16. Tank is about 30-40cm high, 30cm wide and about 20 deep, had it set up a few days before i got the fish, so nearly a month - tail started getting ragged and disappearing in last few days. Have not changed water yet, just a filter tray under the stones on tank bottom, do not have any test kits, was not aware i should have  Melafix?
  17. I am new to these forums and was going to wait until i had a great photo of my red male fighting fish, Enzo, before i posted to say hi. But yesterday i noticed Enzo's beautiful long tail was a little bit ragged, like he'd caught it on something (he is the only fish in his tank), though i saw no evidence of that anywhere else in the tank. And now, i came home from work today and he has 3 or 4 of what look like white fuzzy balls, tiny things, on random spots on his ragged tail. Thought it may just be his tail healing up from however he lost some of it and got it ragged, but as it's in what looks like tiny balls of fluff, i was worried it may be some kind of infection or fungal infection!! Help! Am very worried, have had him about 3 weeks, he's 6-8 months old and such a charachter. He's still acting his usual sparky self, coming up to the top of his tank when i approach and waiting to be fed. So he's still spunky and alert, but i'm worried about those little fluffy things....... Any input at all would be much appreciated...... On a lighter note, a few days ago i picked up 6 little juvenile fighters. They range from 1 to 1.5cm, and are colouring up with bright blues and aqua, so i'm excited about watching them mature (they're in a separate tank to Enzo of course). But yeah, i'm going to do some research and see if i can find out what's wrong with Enzo, in the meantime i hope someone can shed a little light on this, so i can fix it, aaarrgghh, worried.... :-? Thanks everyone Regards, Jo P.S. Ummmm, if it helps - his tank has only smooth stones, a big smooth flat rock, and a fake plant, maybe if he did rip his tail it may have been on that? Haven't been able to go grab some real plants for him yet... But yeah, let me know if i can tell u guys anything esle that could help you help me help Enzo...... ................i worry too much....... ......or do i?......... ..... .......... ..... ....
