  1. PP comes in a powder, you mix it with water to desired strength. I haven't had any adverse effects from it but it destroys anything organic, so if it's too strong it will kill your plants. I use to do a strong mix for 10mins but find a light solution for half an hour is safer. It stains a lot too so you might want to use gloves, but then again i don't and it hasn't really stained before. PP definitely kills snails and eggs well but i don't know if it's anymore or less effective than alum sorry as i haven't used alum.
  2. I've heard alum is fine, there will be info on the net. Also at www.simplydiscus.com. I use potassium permanganate (pink solution - soak plants for half an hour in bucket) You can pick up PP from chemist shops.

    Pressurised CO2

Hmmm that sounds frustrating, and you don't want any (possible) leaks in your bedroom. What's the difference between delta and alpha regulators from Dupla? Does any know if aqua medic do them cheaper?
  4. Cardinals, nice and slow moving just how discus like it. They compliment discus colours really well not to mention the planted tank

    Pressurised CO2

Hey Warren, do you tape up all the joins? Or does it all fit nicely with no leaks? I read an article that said you needed to tape it all up to avoid leaks which I didn't think sounded very good... Cheers

    Pressurised CO2

I just talked to the BOC guys and they reckoned the regulator would be sweet as you can use it to totally shut off the flow if you want. Therefore you can turn it just slightly to get desired flow. Have you actually tried this out Pies?
  7. You'll find siamese algae eaters don't do enough work to rid you of it. Apparently the American Flag fish does an amazing job at it but then every algae eating fish you read about says that and most are pretty crap at it in reality. Yeah you need at least 3 clowns and they can get big as Ira says which i think is cool cuz you can try grow them out for years. Completely subjective but some say clowns aren't a good mix with discus as clowns are quite active at night while the discus try to sleep. It seems the more clowns you get the more active they are, e.g i added 3 more to my bunch of 3 and they are much more active now.
  8. I have exactly the same stuff in my 300L tank. It's definitely hair algae. The only stuff I find that rids you of it (with ease) is Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Algae Fix, but this is always only temporary. I'm trying adding it everyday at the moment to hopefully eradicate it totally. It's terrible stuff to be doomed with.

    Yummy live food

I've heard you need to sort of aerate the mix by having some drain holes at the bottom, but then I thought the worms would escape through them. Do have anything like that on your polystyrene boxes Ira? Do you change the dirt at times? Also one more question, what kind of dirt is it?

    corydoras

I know, that's why i entered some of those words myself. However, if you don't have any iris colour, it's more than likely going to make it hard to see especially with big bright fluro lights above you. I just don't think it's a good idea to reproduce something that is prone to defects.

    corydoras

Golden (leucistic) varieties are the same but lacking skin pigment, often they will have ghost markings of the original variety. Albinos usually have red eyes (no pigment so you see the blood vessels from the inside of the eye (iris)) and at least in the human form they often have eye problems due to this. Edit: "Albinism: Humans, animals, and even plants can have this condition. Most kids with albinism have problems with their eyes and have trouble seeing. For eyes to work properly, it's really important for them to have enough pigment. The iris (the colored part of your eye) helps control the amount of light coming into your eye and hitting your retina, which is located at the back of your eyeball. When a person has albinism, the iris doesn't have enough color and can't shield the retina from light. So, people with albinism often have to wear glasses or contacts to help them see better. Outside, they usually need sunglasses or tinted contact lenses. In addition to vision problems, with some kinds of albinism, a person might have trouble with his or her lungs, blood, kidneys, or other parts of the body." extracted from http://kidshealth.org/kid/health_proble ... inism.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albino state that "a variety of problems with photosensitivity in eyesight and skin usually result from the condition" and many features of albinism probably apply to animals also (2004).
  12. It's getting pretty warm up here in the BOP so it must be nearly time to try the new setup for the rosy barbs?? Are they quite prolific breeders?
  13. How're they going Caryl?
  14. I'm away from my flat during Christmas, will post it when I get back.
  15. Hi HummingBird, I can PM you a link to PMDD (poor man's dosing drops) if you like. Has all the ingredients you need and roughly in what quantities to use them. I'd also be interested to see what Warren uses too however...

    lighting

I have a twin 4' DIY light setup that I would sell to you cheap. It's heavy so it has to be hung from the ceiling or it chips the cover glass under the weight. It's made out of wood. Cheers
  19. Massive-a-tank! Awesome work Warren. I'm guessing it's 820 front to back? The fish must love it. Is it just neons or a mix with cardinals in there too? Well done
  20. So what are the dimensions terminal???
  21. I'd put them in the sump, will look tidier. What are the dimensions of the tank Wazza? Sounds like a beast
  22. But why the need to boil the peat?
  23. What's the deal when people say boil peat? Is it fine to not do that and just have it in some pantyhose?
  24. What you wanna do is run the two filters together. The unseeded filter will seeded/cycled in 2 weeks using this method, about half the time of a normal cycle as caryl has suggested. Water ager for me, although I'm not actually sure if there is chlorine in the water here, I assume there is. The bigger the city usually the more chlorine in the water to kill the larger variety of bugs. Apparently certain areas in America has heaps.
