  1. When you cleaned the filter material under the shower, was the water hot or cold? Cold water kills the beneficial (nitrifying) bacteria that keeps your fish from dying of ammonia or nitrite poisoning. Could've been overfeeding but doesn't sound too bad, I feed mine usually just twice a day, some do it once every two days or less. Water changes every week would be more beneficial to feeding that often.
  2. How'd they go fins? Any pics?
  3. Yeah have you been doing any water changes??? Is there any testers there e.g for nitrate/nitrite/ammonia? Did you wash the filter recently in cold water?
  4. Hehe no I liked the long reply. Discus sound fascinating. Interesting about the daphnia, must be infected with something. Good you still have a hundred man that's heaps! Sounds like you have good variety of foods, good water change schedule, great stuff especially for your first breed
  5. When I had green water in my tank I did daily 50% water changes. After about 3 of those I was fine. I also have been fine since, and I have a much better filter, so I think it was a combination of the both.
  6. How are they going mouse? lol @ child support Is your camera digital or normal?
  7. Is there a photo of the blue turquoise and silver dreamer and fry? Wasn't too sure if they were in the pics or not. Can you put captions under the pics to identify them all? Cheers
  8. I had the same question Chris but luckily just found them
  9. Even arowanas breed Check other thread. Amazing
  10. Not too bad at all, how much will you be selling the juveniles for?
  11. Discus??? Set up a dedicated discus fish room for breeding and raising discus and have water cylinders to age the water and automatically pump it back in. There's a challenge

    Daphnia?

Thanks for the info Fins, I see they say "salmon-pink", which is kinda vague, my "things" are quite orangy, but this would obviously reflect the muddy conditions they come from. I wonder how the first one gets there? It's just a muddy little puddle essentially that is large enough to not dry up in a couple of good days weather. I collected a whole heap more today and I have them in a bucket outside. It would be good if I had a microscope to get a closer look. How did you take that picture Caryl? It looks like it was taken under microscope.
  13. I guess no one actually had any discus juveniles for sale. When's the next show?

    Daphnia?

Is the best way to get oxygen to them (with little fuss) to leave them outside in a bucket where the wind will constantly yet mildly diffuse oxygen into the water? These...things I have are quite round, but I guess they could be full on plant detritus as you say Alan, and the ones I have at home are very thin and clear due to lack of food.

    Daphnia?

Speaking of daphnia, I just went in search of some because I knew where a little pond had gathered, in it sure enough I found little bugs in there, but they are red looking, not clear as daphnia are supposed to be, i put one in my tank one of my lemon tetras munched it down. What could it be?
  16. Do they reproduce really fast? There's a few I notice flitting around in some of my tanks that I could siphon out. If they eat the food that fast, I think my greenwater demand would quickly outweigh my supply!
  17. I just gathered two jars from my stagnant water that hosts my mosquito larvae, it is SO green! It's awesome, got it sitting in some niiice full sun now Going to breed my rummies tonight hopefully so now they will have some nice greenwater to get them started on.
  18. That's an excellent idea Caryl, never thought about that. I've got a bucket outside full of mosquito larvae and that's also totally green, which I assume is greenwater, it's really old but I think I'll harvest some into a couple of jars and leave them in the sun. I've read you need the water in an area where it will get most sun. Pegasus has got some info on infusoria/green water here: http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/grumpygr/ (under all about live foods, infusoria) This site is also useful: http://www.tropical-fish.net/fish_food.htm#Infusoria about getting it started. They don't seem to differentiate between infusoria and greenwater though, from what I can gather the infusoria is microscopic organisms and the green water is just algae water, but you can't have one without the other??? Hope this helps Now where can I find a disused pool
  19. Gidday geezer, why not buy another angel of the same colour? Or a few, then wait for them to establish a pair.
  20. Sounds like Jurassic Park when those little dinos eat that guy alive.
  21. I've emailed MAF before about importing discus, they were sweet about it. Great news Kim! i just like buying a pack when the old runs out so I'm glad I didn't have to annoy my flatmates and stock up. Does anyone else find Kong's wrapping not very good? Like you go to push a cube out and it doesn't just break one seal but others too.
  22. Wow sounds like you're going to be well prepared Mouse. Any pictures of the discus/fry at all? Where is Opiki near? North or South Island?
  23. Cool - I didn't realise you had whiteworms Shae. Did you setup another culture off your original batch with the fertilised potting mix?
