  1. Wow. Your tank must be chocka with acro's like Pies! Or, you got a heap of precipitation, which I found a big issue when using 2 part.
  2. Layton a little piece of knowledge you could benefit from, said by a wise man :- "When in a hole, don't keep digging"
  3. How do you know the coral supplies enough? It's all about how high pH goes during the day. Without Co2 mine hits 8.5. That's cos the corals are not producing enough. I've set the reactor to hold it around 8.3, which is better. "Co2 can slow calcification" A rather incomplete statement. It will slow calcification IN EXCESS, as I have already pointed out.
  4. Yes that is an excellent option, pluses all round for a number of reasons. It's been posted before but here is an article showing some of the benefits of this http://www.reefscapes.net/articles/bree ... asser.html
  5. Depends how you manage the Co2. IMO running a reactor at night is detrimental to growth as it lowers pH and therefore growth. However it can be a plus during the day as Co2 is required for photosynthesis. My Co2 regulator has a solenoid on a timer it is turned off overnight, this system seems to work very well.
  6. I used to use dosing pumps, dosed calcium alkalinity & magnesium all automated with a 3 way IKS. The system has merits but the downside was always having to hassle around mixing chemicals. Eventually bit the bullet & went calcium reactor, the downside of this (at first ) being the extra Co2 in the tank. Now though I've got the Co2 sorted. For me anyway, the reactor is easier, in fact I can remember feeling the "burden fell off" type feeling after setting it up, the reactor is also tidier without so many bottles etc. However both systems are good I don't really see the point of big arguments over it.
  7. Skippy I will drop to jetski Ira, bound to be some more in a few weeks, I'll let you know.
  8. Well done! I saw a TV doco about a paua pearl farm, down your way but I can't remember just where. They fed them kelp. In fact the guy had to start growing kelp to get enough, and from that developed another business where he dried it, ground it, and put in jars to sprinkle on food as a seasoning. Very popular overseas. What will likely happen if you have heaps of them, is that there will not be enough food as they grow. only two possibilities, they stop growing, or they die. But hey, you know what those things are worth? HEAPS! Considered aquaculturing?
  9. Layton you are completely unrepentant, and trying to argue about it, as I expected. I repeat, I will be speaking to a moderator next time I see you do it.
  10. OK all you guys can have one but I got email also so now I'm cleaned out, none for anyone else. Give me a call 479-5446, or drop me a pm to set up a time or whatever. Skippy I think 2 days in a jar would be about the outside end. What you could do though if it has to be longer, is bring a bucket of water, a heater & power head & set up in the hotel room. That way, while your partner is away from you, you are out there visiting people & adding to your frag collection! Where am I? North Shore. The address is 9 Ronald Macken Place, Mairangi Bay.
  11. Layton, get a grip on your mouth. How many other people here use such terms of abuse? None, other than you. Does this kind of thing help you win hearts & minds? No. I really do think you have the most overblown opinion of yourself of anyone I know. Two world renowned experts see things different to you, therefore they are ignorant. The WWM article does not agree with you therefore it contains "crap". Anybody else who questions you has "sheep mentality". It does not even cross your mind that perhaps Eric Bourneman is not ignorant, but it might be you that has a thing or two to learn. But then, why would it cross the mind of someone who will happily share with us all, the similarities between his own thought processes and philosophies, and those of Albert Einstien!! I am not dissagreeing with you talking about the effectiveness of a UV. I am just SICK of your name calling. Maybe it grates on me every time I see you do it, because I have so often been a victim of your name calling myself, I don't know. Just so you know, next time I see you slag someone off as ignorant, i WILL BE taking it up with a moderator.
  12. Let's see. I know the coral, it's a toughy
  13. Done. But - I'm one of those old guys who don't know how to text. PM me your address I'll put them in the post. And your REAL phone number so I don't have to pay to call you!
  14. Uh Oh! here we go! I did say wait for it.........
  15. Yes in fact I think they are extremely brittle, it must be a natural propogation technique. Pain in the butt when I'm trying to grow a big one.
  16. I still have some prunings / breakages free to a good home. More of them than i thought i REALLY HAVE been putting them in the rubbish. Now the weather is warmer they could probably be freighted to other places via snail mail in a jar or similar, cost of p&p should be around 5 bucks or so.
  17. Agreed. Doit Doit Doit!!! Trust me it will be sweet!
  18. Sounds like exactly the same argument as used to support garlic! Not wanting to start anything though It was a joke. JOKE?
  19. Yes I was VERY impressed with Puttputts tank, And the man himself, when I paid a visit. Been doing it for years, including a huge cold water setup with snapper and many other local fish, plus cold water anemones etc. A wealth of experience & a practicle realistic guy. Funny to see a relative newby wannabe scientist telling him where he is going wrong! End of the day the man who gets the results gets my vote.
  20. wasp

    dosing pumps

Got mine 2nd hand so not quite sure of the price. You will be able to control them with an IKS controller. I controll mine with a timer, it goes on 12 seconds, off 7 minutes. They are designed for multiple on / off cycles, I checked with the agent. Been going a long time now, no issues.
