  1. A rather big assumption again Layton, there's no bleached corals in my tank? But really I was just pointing out that i DO know what is always on your mind
  2. I bet I always know what's always on your mind Layton, here it is...... Ha Ha! One of the EASIEST bets I ever won!!

    Anemones

Here's a page with some good shots, gives an idea of habitat & light requirements also. Plus the awesome colour variations. Don't think I'd have one myself though I've read a lot of sad stories about the fish people have lost. http://chekjawa.nus.edu.sg/ria/text/anemones.htm
  4. Hey thanks for all the info! Looks like I could spend the whole holiday doing this! Don't think wifey would be pleased though  .
  5. Yes, can't remember how many but he took some of mine with TN, they recovered fairly quickly but one frag was too far gone & died a few days later. While bacteria may be the cause it doesn't mean they're ALWAYS the cause there are other things also.
  6. Off to Melbourne at Christmas to visit my daughter, her partner and her are keen aquarium keepers & are taking me to the Melbourne Aquarium! Hope it's not as poor as Layton said it is, anyhow I am looking forward to this. We'll also be doing a trawl of some of the shops , won't be able to bring anything back sadly, but I'll certainly be taking the camera.
  7. An experienced reefer just told me he believes that TN can be spread by bacteria, so thought I better post that.
  8. You mean bacteria? Yes they will kill leathers & softies but normally only after they got damaged.

IMO a lot of pain for very little gain. Surely must be weaker than the origional.
  10. Years ago on sites like RC, bacteria were commonly blamed, although I don't think anyone really know for sure. Probably more likely it's other factors, then bacteria may get involved after the damage is done. Only other thing that could be transmittable would be bugs such as red bugs, or some kind of nudi. Have you had a real close look, preferably with a good magnifying glass? But me, I think it is something to do with the carbon / lighting / water thing, but having said that I still don't know what actually caused it when I had somewhat similar problem in my tank, never could figure it out. Although I know what Layton's thinking!
  11. Check this, 14 posts down, by Sharkey. One of the most useful posts out. Have also used this method myself to clean up several dirty tanks, does work. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/2-vt13 ... c&start=15
  12. Vodka is a rough tool. It will reduce nutrients, but can affect some organisms negatively. As it is beneficial in terms of nutrient reduction, how about instead of stopping altogether, reduce the amount & attempt to find the level that will not negatively affect your softies?
  13. Chimera has been very honest about his problem, good on him! He is hardly the first person to have had problems, just been the most open about it. Lots of tanks zeovit or not have had problems, the person sometimes keeps it quite Layton.
  14. Ever considered a personality transplant, Layton?
  15. Iodine is one of those additives that people either swear by, or swear at. I've tried it, hard to say if it really does anything. Couple of things I have seen dosing it for recomended by reefer I respect, a cleaner shrimp that is having trouble moulting, and to ease the way if introducing acros that are not in the best shape to the tank.
  16. Here is a link to a guys site who has a nice tank and has also made videos of 3 species of angelfish that spawn in it. http://www.minireef.esmartweb.com/loveinreef.htm
  17. Ok I've made your calibrating formula Layton, the revised version to give a level of 380. Using this calibrating solution, the way my eye reads the kit, I get a reading of around 300 when the line completely fades from view. Reading the link from Bychineva to the thread by Alexander G about how to read the kit, I can see he would have come in at an earlier stage and got a higher number. But for me that's pretty hard to judge, I'd rather have it when the line dissapears from view completely. Anyhow I've solved it. Instead of using the test vial that comes with the kit, I tried a slightly narrower & taller one from a different kit. Perfect! The test strip line faded from view right on 380, as the view is through a slightly higher distance of test mix. Gives the same reading for NSW, so I think I've got it sussed! So thanks for the help Layton. Also, I now have enough of this calibrating solution to last several lifetimes, so anybody else wants some let me know. However the NSW I have tested is the same, so that could be used also, it's just good to have it confirmed by a calibrating standard solution.
  18. Yes a pic would help although I suspect it may look like a jellyfish by now. Can't see anything there that would cause a problem, just not knowing how big the tank is I'm not sure if that is enough light. Did the anemone get more pale over time? Probably too late for this anemone, but I'm thinking about making sure things are OK if you get another.
  19. Dude! Chill! You did not make an error. Just the way it was written could have meant either or. I appreciate the help!
  20. Thought the error would be 5%? Quite a bit far as I'm concerned! But hey, appreciate the help, I'll keep you posted how it goes.
  21. Hey Layton! I'm going to make your recipe later tonight but first a couple of questions for you. Your recipe is to make a mix at 400 ppm, but I want one of 380. So, according to my 2 hour calc (just kidding  ), instead of using 15.2 grams, I should use 14.44. That sound right to you? Also, the bit where you said to dissolve 5 mls in 100 mls of water, you mean add the 5 mls to 100 mls making a total of 105 mls, or did you mean add the 5 mls to 95 mls making a total of 100 mls?

    New aquascaping

    Happens to everyone eventually!
  23. Doesn't sound good, it's probably history. If you can, answering a few questions can help us diagnose. What kind of anemone is it? Has it slowly changed colour while you've had it and if so from what to what? What is your salinity? What is your lighting? Do you dose anything to your water and if so, what? Do you have much algae growing?
  24. When I went through a bad patch when I changed tanks, some of the corals looked like they might die & I farmed them out to other people, best thing I did, people are happy to help.
