Hi everyone My Penguin Tetras are either trying to kill each other or they have fallen in love! They are zooming round all over the tank, often side by side and glancing off each other. Do they breed in captivity or are they just kidding themselves? LOL Cheers Judy

Well, I would enter but I've just started and only have a handful of neons. I don't even know their proper name ......... LOL. I am going to attend to show my support and with any luck I will have more knowledge and more fish next time. Cheers Judy

Thanks Ballistic One of my problems is I start to get too fancy. I think it comes from having a father who used to make all sorts of gadgety things to make life easier - most of them were really clever and worked well. I get confused over things like lights - if you have several flourescent tubes in a hood how can you get them to connect to one switch etc. - my brain just isn't good with stuff like that. I guess when the time come there are lots of people here who could offer advice. I'm kinda thinking it would be cool to have bright light in the centre and dimmer (maybe purple) light at either end. Ah well, at least I have plenty of time to dream and plan and confuse myself! Cheers Jude

Hi again Spooky I agree about the custom tanks, especially as I could get something exactly the right size. The problem is I don't feel I know enough about how the cabinets are designed and especially how the hoods are designed - how they sit on the tank, what lights would be needed, where there should be holes for tubes and cords etc. etc. etc. I get a bit daunted when I start to think about it all ........ Cheers Jude

Hi Jo Your ad on trademe was another one I was interested in. But it looked to me as though the curved end was at the left when facing the tank. That's the wrong end for where I want to put it. It would end up with the curve in a corner and the sharp end being the bit people had to walk around. If it hadn't been for that I would probably have bid. It would be good to come and have a look at some stage though. I will give you a call when I have some free time What was the price you were selling it for - I can't remember now. Cheers Judy

Thanks Spooky, thats exactly the details I'm looking for. Being a short-"arms" (that's ARMS, not A**) I would probably have even more trouble reaching in to the tank. And I definitely want to be able to hide the cords etc. You just saved me buying something I wouldn't have been happy with Thanks again Judy

Will there be anything for sale at the fish show? I know there is an auction but I presume thats for fish. Can anyone tell me what else might be for sale Cheers Judy

Looks fantastic but seeing I can't do it myself it would be too expensive and time consuming. And the one thing I've found about built-in stuff is that it limits furniture rearranging .......... LOL Cheers Judy

Hi again I am hoping to get a much bigger tank soon. It will be a focal point in the house and I want it to be attractive. I've been browsing round trademe and found something that I thought looked good - the url and description are below. I just wanted to check out if anyone knows of reasons why these are not good tanks and whether the filter in the hood is likely to be OK. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Lifestyle/Pets ... 502981.htm Listing is - 285 Litre Aquarium R2-120 Fish Tank and stand Description is - 285 Litre Aquarium R2-120 moulded glass tank (no joins at the front). Hi again I am planning to build a rock wall out of small pieces of schist I have. The wall is for my BIG tank when I can afford it and the tank will have an outside filter. I thought I would build the wall on an old UG filter plate, put it on the bottom of the tank, and cover it with gravel - that would mean I could build it in advance and the plate would give it some stability. The problem is I don't have a lot of schist and I really don't want to buy more - so I don't want to have the first layer or two of the wall buried in the gravel - especially as the base would need the most solid and squarest bits, leaving all the odd shapes for the rest of the wall. So my question is, what could I use to build the first layer or two of this wall? Something 2-3" high and squarish. Would bits of bricks be OK? Cheers Jude

Hi all I've got a big patch of what I think is pond weed growing in a boggy patch of the garden. I just had a look at it and its actually growing in the water rather than the soil. The whole mat just lifted off and the roots were clean apart from some bits of bark tangled in them. What would happen if I put some in my tank? Would it take over or be well behaved? If its suitable could I plant it in the gravel or just have it as a floating mat? Cheers Jude

Thanks everyone. I've been trying to get hold of Port Nicholson Glass but get no reply. I've been ringing the number in the book - 9399030. Is that the correct one or has the number changed? Thanks for the suggestion about recycling places too. I will give that a go if I can't get hold of Peter Cheers Judy

What would be a reasonable price to pay for getting a piece of glass cut. Size 375mm x 895mm and I guess it needs to be 6mm thick. Does anyone know where I could get a piece cheaply in the Wellington area? I rang a few places today and was quoted between $55 and $69 and I'm not willing to pay that for a top for a grotty old tank. Cheers Judy

Short (no pun intended) of putting an old heater in a tank of water, turning it on and throwing the cat in, is there any way of testing whether old fish tank heaters are still OK? Judy

What plants would people recommend for tanks - I like tanks heavily planted. What do people feel are the most attractive/easily grown/easily propagated .............. and I guess easy to get. Cheers Judy

Wok, are you suggesting the natural elements in Wellington are wet? LOL

I've just found an old 4' tank in the garage. I put it on the deck and filled it with water - no leaks and it hasn't exploded all over the place. Its filthy, has been used to store sand/sawdust/and other rubbish over the years. Are there any tips for cleaning it? I presume I shouldn't use household cleaners but it will take an awful lot of elbow grease to get it looking nice. Cheers Judy

Thanks for that Ira and BG - I will make a note of the answer so I never have to ask again ....... LOL

Sorry everyone, I feel like I am bombarding you all with questions. The problem is that once I start thinking about things I start wanting to know more and more. Please, if one of the moderators feel I am asking too much just email me and politely tell me to slow down ) I've been looking on the net and in books but I can't find the information I know I saw previously. I seem to remember reading that PH and hardness usually, but not always, go hand in hand but I can't remember which way round it was. Is alkaline water usually hard and acid usually soft? Or is it the other way round? Thanks, and I will try to keep my curiousity under a bit more control from now on Judy

That was my other question What plants? I knew I forgot something! Cheers Judy
