  1. Out of the landlord's garden. :gigl:
  2. So I finally moved out of my apartment and within the first week, I went from one tank to three, the biggest of which is a 350L second hand tank that I'll be putting mbuna and synos in. I figured since I've been posting photos on Facebook, I should put them all together in one place as well. Stocking to be: 15 to 20 x Demasoni 8 to 10 x Electric Yellows 8 to 10 x Rusty Cichlids 6 to 8 Synodontis petricola Filter will be a Nautilus 2700UVC Canister Filter (at the moment I've just got a 1200lph random branded filter that came with the tank to cycle). Tank came with a cabient and a hood. The glass is quite scratched and the sealing is rather crazy (both inside and out), but seems really solid with no leaks. Previous owner said they kept goldfish in it for seven years before deciding to sell as they were moving. Hardscape is about 70kgs approx of volcanic rock, and 25kgs (so far) of aragonite. Sorry for the crappy photos, my phone is not the best.
  3. Man, there's a serious whirlwind going through that tank!
  4. Sorry you lost her Can you still post the picture so we can try figure out what happened to her?
  5. It's not always. It depends on the type of algae. Some appear when there's too much nutrients in the water, or too much light, or when the tank is just going through it's cycling process. This one is probably just from new tank syndrome. Just keep up the water changes (maybe do 30% every week rather than once every two weeks), and keep the substrate nice and tidy so dirt doesn't build up. If it gets really bad, cover the tank up completely for three days (the fish will be fine without food for this long), and the worst of the algae should die off.
  6. Oh wow! They're really cool looking!
  7. Maybe just a planted scape with no fish/shrimp in it? You could top it up with water change water from another tank. I did something similar, but moved all of the pond snails I found in my main tank into the 10L, and they kept it pretty clean.
  8. How are they all zero? You can't get zero nitrates, even in a densely planted tank.
  9. You can buy heater guards that stop the fish from being able to touch it.
  10. Could he have burnt himself on the heater?
  11. That wavemaker looks awesome, saving that link for my cichlid tank. Though... it does say in the description that's it's only suitable for freshwater tanks.
  12. It's a good list. The amounts are good too, I was recommended the same thing. Double the adult numbers you want, so you can weed the aggressive ones, and not have to introduce new fish.
  13. Looks great! What's your stock list like so far?
  14. How's the filter going with the tank? Is it picking up enough from the bottom all good? Just curious, are you running a powerhead or wave maker in there to get the flow going?

Join the club, it's an addiction that's never going to leave you. And don't worry, 90% or so of us started with goldfish. Count yourself lucky, least yours survived the newbie stage!
  16. If you are thinking of making an FNZAS twitter, you can just connect it to the FNZAS facebook page, and it'll just auto post to it whenever you post on Facebook.
  17. Good ol' Kim Dotcom's aquarium looked to be of decent size.
  18. You might want to give that broken image link another try. Edit: Nevermind, it decided to fix itself just as I posted this.
  19. I've never heard of the gaps in the Duo's dividers being too small. Maybe try posting on the kiwi Siamese Fighters group on Facebook. I know people there have the same tank as you, I'm sure they'll be able to help.
  20. What type of algae is it? What colour? How long has the tank been set up for?
  21. Thanks for this! A little out of my knowledge league, but one day!
  22. How do you keep seahorses? Would you need a super fancy tank?
  23. There's one currently in a Petstop in Newmarket, Auckland, but that's a bit far for you. Here's the list of Farlowella allowed in the country. You can check species on here: http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/files/ih ... ic.all.pdf
