  1. Looks good! As it won't lift off once its in the water.
  2. Yup, they're pretty much similar to java ferns. They like their roots out of the ground, and will attach themselves to rocks and driftwood, and are very slow growers.
  3. Java fern is super easy as a tank plant. It doesn't grow very fast, but it's hardy as. It doesn't need any fertilisers or super bright light either. Just buy some java fern off trademe, and to attach it to the wood, you can either use something like a rubber band to hold it there (and cut it off when the fern has attached), or cotton thread to tie it on (like brown so you can't see it against the wood). Personally, I'm lazy and just wedge it between rocks, and it eventually grabs hold of the rock.
  4. It's apparently in New Lynn, but you have to book a time to view the fish? New Lynn is only about 5 minutes from me so I'm tempted to go have a noisy.
  5. What's the fish you're looking at getting?
  6. Just thought I'd add this. Left is him at the worst point, right is after the furan treatment. It's like his was the swelling, but it burst? (Also had a few embers nip at the wound).
  7. You should post a picture of the bracing, someone might be able to help. Tanks shouldn't just bow out like that.
  8. What about looking in to pygmy corys? You could gave a good group of them, no problems.
  9. Just remember to make sure you have proper sized schools. Most tetra like being in decent schools, with 8 being minimum for most, and 10+ being far better. Cory also like to be in schools of 6+.
  10. Add your information into this and see how you do: http://www.aqadvisor.com/AqAdvisor.php? ... AddFilter& It's a great site for working out basic stocking and compatibility for your tank and filter size.
  11. I used a black blanket on one of mine. It's very easy and actually looks great! Also an el cheapo option would be to cut open a black rubbish bag and use that.
  12. Pretty much. When I can, I'll be getting a few sheets to replace the crap bioballs in the Nautilus, so I'll have extra bits to cut off anyway, and was trying to think ways to reuse them.
  13. I wonder if it would work by making like a poret tube cover for the intake of a canister. It would be a mini version on the outside, with poret and noodles inside the canister too. I'm forever getting plant bits over the filter intake, so having something to catch it before it gets in would be good.
  14. I think I stuffed up my estimate of the size of the tank in my stocking suggestion (I thought it was closer to 300L). 140L might only be big enough for one or two groups of fish (they'll start adding fish themselves in time). Google Aqadvisor and put your filter and tank size estimates in there, and then work out how many adult fish you can have. Cool tank stand though!
  15. Your tank is just a little smaller in volume than mine is (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=67694), but the footprint is better, so you could do something similar to what I've done. My demis and yellows are still growing, but the best thing to do with demis especially, is to get them as juvies in a group up to twice what your adult stocking will be, and then take out the aggro ones when they get older. I've got around 25 demi juvies and 15 yellow juvies at the moment, plus 10 adult rustys (plus fry), and a group of cuckoo catfish.
  16. Depends on how thin, and what they're made on. Rocks can be pretty heavy, so whatever you use needs to be able to hold them up decently. Anything too thin, and the rocks will just compress on a point until they're touching the glass anyway.
  17. I got mine from Hollywood Fish Farm, but there's also eggcrate on trademe.
  18. I use eggcrate. It's great, and stops them from digging right down to the glass and unsettling the rocks. It also makes the rocks more stable than against the flat glass. I also had two rather large rocks, that my partner and I lowered down into the tank using a towel so when it touched down, it didn't crack the glass (and the tank is 60cm tall and on a cabinet, so just lifting it in was dangerous).
  19. Just gave it a try tonight, and the fish don't seem over keen on it just yet, though I'm wondering if the sheet was a bit old as it was quite hard to rip. Does it take a bit for fish to get used to it if they haven't had it before? Is there a special type or brand that you use?
  20. How would the poret foam do inside a Nautilus? Would having one or two trays of just the sponges work, or would it clog up after a while on the first section?
  21. Came home and Chuck's wound on his back is twice as big from this morning. There's scales falling off him. I think the embers have been eating his scales, which is why they've been getting sick internally. I'm isolating him in a QT tank once the heater has warmed it up.
  22. Little bit off topic, but how well does Peace lily grow completely submerged? I know you can emerse grow them, but I've never seen one fully in the tank before. Also, I think I need to go find some nori! What brand/product do you use?
