    Reefs Reef Tank

As for me, let me put it this way. Willing to sell CHEAP!! I may be an outlier though since others rave about it. I just haven't been able to get the algae to grow no matter what I do. That being said, I never intended to use it for nutrient export since my tests have always been zero. I suppose I am still benefiting from the minerals that it leaches over time, but I don’t test for those and thus really have no idea. Basically, the only reason that it is still in the tank is because I paid over $600 for it.  As soon as it runs it’s course, I will be replacing it with HEAPS of rock.
  2. Hey Pies- Looking good!! What are you dosing to your system with that dosing pump?? Cheers, Steve
  3. I personally think that they are great. Definitely one of the best (if not the best) in town. Bob and Craig give me amazing service and Bob tries his best to get me whatever livestock that I want. Also, they typically have the best prices around on fish and coral.
  4. I was lucky enough to get a frag and can definitely vouch for its awesome potential. I was stunned when I saw it again under Layton's lights. A truly great score!! I also made a few purchases of a couple young Acro tables just starting to go horizontal 8) and a massive stag of my own (not nearly so promising in color though ).
  5. I just wanted to say a big thanks to Nodle for organizing and hosting the inaugural Christchurch reef meeting. The tank was looking amazing as usual. It was especially nice to finally get most of the local reefers together to put faces to all the aliases from this forum, share stories/experiences/plans for the future and even score some frags from Layton’s generosity! Looking forward to the meeting next month, which is at my house for all those that didn’t get a chance to attend today. Thanks again for everything Dave!!
  6. They definitely do a 240V version of the squirt. Paul had these available before he had the 240V motors for the 4 ways. Just send him an e-mail (address from the website). He provides the best service around!! And yes, I LOVE my OM 4-way 8) and would recommend it to anyone interested in increasing their flow via closed loop!!
  7. Thanks Dave Either of those days should be fine Cheers, Steve
  8. Chris, they are basically what Layton described. Here is a link http://www.kthsales.com/website/Misc/hello_salt_water_enthusiasts.htm
  9. I bought the King 3 with my setup when I first started out. It was cheap and got me through the first year. As for quiet, not really. I have replaced it with a Eheim 1262 and Eheim 1250, which are awesome pumps, but quite expensive new. I just bought a Laguna 7 for a couple hundred that seems to work out fine. It is quieter than the King 3 and heaps more flow. I have no idea about Laguna's reputation, but it was relatively cheap at the time and allowed me to buy other goodies that I also wanted. I don't expect it to last forever (like the Eheims), but it is certainly doing the job for now. When I buy "the" pump for my return, I'm sure it will be a pressure rated Iwaki so that I can run some eductors for extra flow. Steve
  10. Hey Dave- Saturday/Sunday sounds good to me (except for weekend after next since I will be snorkeling in Rarotonga!) I like the idea of rotating houses as well to check out each other’s tanks. There seems to be quite a few of us, so it would be quite a while before it came around to your own place again. So hopefully, we would be able to notice/appreciate some nice growth and any new additions/changes each meeting. Cheers, Steve

I have taken Layton’s advice on the Drano (as I have on may other topics) and it seems to have worked like a charm (cheap one at that!! 8) ). One word of caution though, it seems to do as well a job on Mushrooms too!! So if you like the little mushies, be careful of where you squirt the Drano b/c they will be truly mush in a matter of minutes. That was fine with me since I am trying to get rid of the little buggers, but I know there are heaps out there that love them.
  12. Hey Aaron- I know that it can get ugly on here from time to time, but don't give up on us yet. I think you have been a real contribution to the forum and think it would be great to get together for a friendly chat about our little hobby. Come along to the reef meeting and meet some of the reefers in your area. We've been getting together informally for a while and it has been really good. I’ve learned a lot, shared a lot and exchanged quite a few corals (mainly on the receiving end as of yet, but will be handing out my share soon). I hope you change your mind and decide to join in. If not, I am sure that I will run into you sooner or later at one of the fish shops and we can catch up then. Cheers, Steve
  13. I absolutely love my 4-way as well. Definite 10/10 not only for quality of product, but also amazingly good service.
  14. A little bit of rock and coralline algae should disguise it good enough in no time!!
  15. My yellow tang did this for about the first 3 months that I had him. Any time I got close to the tank, he would start flicking his spine against the glass. I just thought he didn't like me much. He has since settled down. He still cruises up to the glass every time I approach, but now with a much more friendly demeanor. Steve
  16. Do you guys own your bottles or do you rent from Boc?
  17. Excellent idea wasp. I have thought about using some type of these smaller C02 bottles as well, but wasn't sure how long they will last before I would need a refill. I don't want to take over this post, but it may be helpful for those trying to decide whether to go in on the deal or not if they had some idea as to the rate of consumption of C02 from other people's tanks. Could those running a calcium reactor give me some idea as to their rate of C02 consumption, size of tank and sort of coral stock? If these smaller bottles last for at least a month or so, then I might go this route and just get a couple of these bottles so that I always have a replacement ready to go.
  18. I am considering doing the BB with Starboard equivalent as well. Let me know what you come up with and I will do the same. Cheers, Steve

Hey Chim- I don't know if there are some available up north at the moment, but Redwood has a really nice juvenile. I thought about buying it myself, but am battling a really nasty bit of white spot. When I was checking him out, he was eating amazingly well (not skinny at all) and not a spot/mark on him. Unfortunately, I can't remember the price, but I obviously didn't think it was too bad since I wanted to buy him myself. Cheers, Steve
  20. The stuff growing completely out of control (all over most of the rocks and even starting to grow on the overflows, etc...) in that tank are a few different types of star polyp. They aren't the same as Xenia, are they?
  21. Here is my little orange cap: I was also fortunate enough to get a frag of Layton's green monti, but I don't have a picture just yet. His whole colony is very nice and looking forward to him posting his pic.
  22. You should add it to your Marine Depot order. That's where I got mine and it is WAY cheaper than anywhere that I've seen here.
  23. I've got a M/F pair of Blue Chin Triggers on order. Should be here in a couple weeks (hopefully)!! 8) I really wanted to get a pair of Crosshatch Triggers, but I guess they aren't on the import list. Many stories of success with either of these on other forums.
  24. I'm using this DIY skimmer It is ugly as hell, but pulls out between 1 and 1.5 liters of nasty dark skimmate per week. My tank has a fairly low bioload, but I do feed them well. I would love to have a big Deltec, but unfortunately can't really afford it right now, so this will have to do the job in the mean time.
