  1. You want to breed clownfish and you are asking these questions? :-? No offence but it is not an easy task! Read up on it first! If you do want to breed them and the question is, do we have the capabilities to do so here in NZL, then yes there are people with green water, rotifiers etc to do this. Oceandose is your man (or "guy" ) For starters, a local example of this here, an introduction to breeding fish here and breeding clownfish article here
  2. business and good communication go hand in hand 8) deltec and reef octopus seem to be the most common brands of skimmer used by hobbyists in nzl. if you really want a 2nd hand skimmer, keep an eye out on trademe, by the time you muck around with shipping costs etc you're not paying much more by buying locally. and as is mentioned above, dont skimp on a cheap skimmer you will be wasting your time.

  4. just dosing reefbooster seems to have made improvements in my tank. purples are coming out on tips of some acro's that never existed before. i only say that as its the only thing I dosed and within 2 days the purples were stronger. throughout the week they faded, dosed again and they increased again.
  5. some updated pic's another 4 months on from last post...
  6. gah... $500 this month, $600 last month... AND we use a gas fireplace...

    AUTO TOP OFF

I'll 2nd that, my last autotop off unit failed and stopped pumping, almost ran the return pump dry, lucky I noticed it in time. Evaporation is fairly consistant in each season, so you can estimate how many litres per day you need to add and work that out on a basic analog timer (more reliable than digital) versus the litre/hour rate of your peristaltic pump. Mine comes on for 10 x 15 minute intervals at various times throughout the day, which equates to 0.75 litres dosed at each interval or 7.5 litres per day during winter.
  8. i got 1,000 litres and use a 1/2HP chiller quite comfortably.
  9. an expensive one Canon 40D from memory?
  10. yes thats what i'd recommend. personally i wouldnt cycle sand in the display tank again. why add even more unwanted nutrients while its cycling? best to do in a separate container with powerhead and heater, leave it in the dark, swish it around and change the water every few days. do that for a month or two (or until the smell goes away )
  11. you will get all sorts of bad algae with poor water quality. all im saying is valonia seem to flourish under poor lighting. need to know more info about your tank gibbo, what lighting, age of bulbs, what levels of nitrate/phosphates, flow? etc
  12. cool, so explain to me how in my system, there is not a trace of valonia in the display tank yet in the refugium its become riddled with valonia now that the bulbs are getting yellow? same volume of water - same level of nutrients. as the bulbs age, the kelvin reduces. algae prefer a lower kelvin, around the 7k mark. this is about the kelvin level of sunlight. aim for 10k or higher, preferably 14k. ensure your bulbs are not too old and still retain there intensity. same thing happened when i had T8's, as the lighting aged valonia started growing hard out. i removed the rock and scraped them and they came back. did the same, next time replacing the bulbs and no growth.
  13. valonia, its a PITA. yes its bad as they grow quick, covering all your rock. nutrients will help them grow, but poor lighting is more likely the culprit

    Phyto

stevea was certainly not banned on NZMAS. He hardly ever posts - anywhere. He certainly has one hell of a stunning tank though

    rowaphos

as an aside, while the likes of rowaphos is very good (at least it has been for me) most phosphate removers have a tendency to stip your kH pretty quick. measure your alkalinity with a test kit and increase kH with baking soda mixed with RODI water. roughly speaking, 1tspn will raise 190 litres by 1kH. maintain kH at around 7-10
  17. i'm going black with just a hint of blue for the upgrade. bit like when you look into the deep ocean
  18. yeah mate, thanks heaps for it shes doin' well. whoa it lives! 8) try the "other" site
  19. Casting a spell and conjuring up the dead here,... might as well add to the end of this... its only been 2 years and 3 months since an update Had 3 tank crashes since :-? largest visual change other than aquascaping was stripping the blue background and changing to black. best change i've done thus far IMO. from this layout/colour as at sept 2006 (tank crashed a month later) to this as at may 2008:
  20. create a bubble trap like this
