  1. Read this thread that's being discussed at the moment, you have cyanobacteria... not a bad thing, just one of those things that typically happens on a new tank... http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt18300.html?start=0
  2. 10 months is EXACTLY the month that I started getting cyano. I continuously syphoned it for the next 2 months even trying the red slime remover (which removed it short term but it came back). It was only after about a 12 - 14 months when (IMO the population of good bacteria in the LR grew to a level that outcompeted the cyano for food) it went. Read this: http://www.netpets.org/fish/reference/r ... teria.html
  3. IMO, a complete waste of time. personally having used it, i wouldn't recommend it and the corals certainly dont like it. essentially you're trying to treat the symptom not the cause. sort out why you're getting cyano (caused by a combination of too many nutrients, inadequate lighting, poor water flow, etc) then wait til it disappears. all tanks have levels of cyanobacteria, its just whether there is a big enough imbalance that will cause it to grow.
  4. you get that property already? is it confirmed? $5
  5. show off mine's still a coral graveyard after total sps death  no time to get it back on track at the moment and still considering tauranga your acro's look lighter than usual? is it the camera, zeovit or have you dropped the lighting?!!!
  6. My tank consumed HEAPS of Mg. Wasn't quite sure it was right so tested with 2 different Salifert test kits just to be sure! That included some Mg chips in the reactor too which didnt quite sustain how much was used up. Of course now that there are stuff-all corals in there...
  7. Rubbish! Have a look at how much Mg you need to put in in order to raise Mag by 100ppm. For a 1,000 litre tank, you need just under 1kg and his tank is almost double that size. How do you know how much Mg skuzza's tank consumes per week?
  8. cheers dude. it's all good, we'll sort something out in your favour... coz i need my roof painted
  9. yes. everything in proportion in high doses, I would imagine yes. anyone have an iron test kit? wasp i think you got one? will be pissed if thats it - such a mega loss of money for something so small. closed loop is off at the moment and ball valves are all shut off. will see what happens after next big water change...
  10. Shane came over this morning to pick up my LPS until i get to the bottom of the problem. While he was here I noticed rust "dripping" from the bearing at the bottom of the closed loop. This could make sense as I replaced that bearing around the same time as I started having issues. Would the addition of rust to the system cause the acro's to die but fish live? I assume it's just like dosing a high content of iron?
  11. Looking at Papamoa beach. Or potentially a lifestyle block, say couple of acre's. Want to build though, otherwise too expensive
  12. potentially, got job interview down there next friday. will see how it goes
  13. well im proud to say my tank is crap, still. the pink monti of wasps is dead. cant really put the right words on here to explain how pissed off i am, probably some new swear words you've never heard of before. weird though, most lps are ok. fish are happy. i really dont get it. anyways, my fish and LR will be up for sale soon probably. keeping all equipment though for starting up later.
  14. why are there so many marine tanks for sale at the moment?! i count about 5 on trademe, thats a heap for this hobby. xmas pressie anyone? from a few $hundred to $10k+ http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 571582.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 624507.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 336432.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 250276.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 995787.htm
  15. ahhh no. i dont think so.
  16. exactly. shaneo done me favour's in past, returning them. yeah looking seriously into it
  17. yeah 2 kids. no! what?!
  18. newer streams. if we move, we would buy land and build. that way i can get just the tank i want and all the other goodies with it. not giving up pumps and skimmer coz i got for good price and they kick arse no worries on rock and corals
  19. potentially, a screw? who knows. as i say, whole tank needs tipping upside down to check. if i move, i'll be selling everything except skimmer, pumps, lighting and reactor (and probably keep some plumbing!). so, fish, rock, corals (what's left  ), display tank (well, thats your shaneo if I do), streams, refugium tank etc will be up for sale.
  20. no dont have kits for it. but yeah, could be it. nothing i can see that's metallic though. will have to have another looksee. thing is, nothing has changed, only thing would be if something fell into the tank that i didnt notice. need to turn everything upside down (including rocks)
  21. pfft. hardly. "experimental reefer" is a better term theres a "katikati" down in bop skippy, thats as close as i'll be to kerikeri 8)
  22. so evil you're in te puke? never noticed  was there last weekend (or rather stayed at papamoa beach and took a drive out to te puke and pukehina - very nice!) papamoa is taking off unbelievably fast, i feel the need for a lifestyle change,... either that or buy a land bank for future retirement
  23. dosing NOTHING for ages. nothing at all. not even carbon. only using skimmer and lighting. Perhaps. Yes, use NSW. Managed 150 litre change tonight. Still need to plumb up the 1,000 litre tank to make it easier. Had to do it by bucket again tonight which is a pain! Anyways, we're considering moving to Tauranga, if we do I'll be selling up a heap of stuff. Start up again mid next year. Who knows, just keeping options open at the moment.
  24. 90% Will be doing another 50% tonight. Test kits are ok - they expire ages away. Could be heat, it's a reasonably hot room. Will take a sample around to someone else's house to get it checked out. Picking it's something outside of the "normal" test kits (ie: not nitrate, nitrite, phosphate) Ca, kH, pH are ok, Mg is a little on the low side (run out of Mag chloride) but not enough to kill acros. Real weird. Fish are all mint. Only coral that has not been effected AT ALL is a green hydnophora. Monti cap has died too.
