  1. I am ordering an Iwaki 55RLT from Marine Depot in the USA. They come in about $350 cheaper (NZL dollars) than if I were to purchase here even AFTER shipping costs, NZL GST etc etc. And yes, that is the 240V version. Just have to wait a 4 weeks for it to arrive though
  2. thats the idea I thought; the dead stuff builds up nitrifying bacteria which is what you eventually want. keep doing water changes.

    heaters

the heaters are sitting in different sections of the sump divided by baffles. all heaters are set 1 degree higher than the controller. controller is 25 degree's, heaters are 26 degrees (which is still an acceptable temperature) I can always use the additional 300W heater to heater water to be changed/use as a spare.
  4. all good pies. i was considering doing a dive course this year,... now i definately am! oh, and it took less than 5 seconds to download the pictures here modem's suck!
  5. pielurpa if jane is heading up perhaps give her a few bits and pieces for all us mid/top north islanders!

    heaters

same with the temperature controller off jss - and likewise an awesome investment. im running 4 x heaters of various makes/models and wattages. the type of heater doesnt matter in this instance (I have heater redudancy ), its the controller that counts. here's the 4th one i just bought, got it in 300W in the end: http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auction_detail_expired.asp?id=16083840 why so many heaters? well, why not, they are cheap! 4 heaters for 1,000 litres is definately overkill. however, the sump room is downstairs under the house and I havent fully insulated that room yet
  7. come on pies, go for a drive!

  10. no new pic's,... yet! not found anemone,... yet! anemone has moved to other side of rocks he was on. looks happy as and was chowing down some seafood mix yesterday. he's about twice the size of when I got him (only because he's "stretched out" of course)

    timers

What brand/type of timer does everyone use to turn their lights on/off? Since i've got the M/H's, I've blown up 2 x timers. They were both HPM digital timers from Dick Smith. The digital display and everything still works, it's just now that the lights never turn off. Even if I manually push the "mode" button to change from Auto to Off, the lights still stay on. These worked fine with my fluoro's so can only assume the MHs have shagged them. Are these timers not rated for massive wattage or something?

first things first, test your replacement water before actually changing it!!! highly unlikely its the test kits, there maybe a little difference between kits but not enough to detect 0 vs 25 for eg. as reef says, provide more details about your tank, eg: stocking levels, skimmer make/model (vs the 600 litres you have), kg of LR (for biological filtration), feeding? etc etc. remember reducing nitrates wont happen overnight,... but it will happen (go the shampoo ad)
  17. wassup! enjoy browsing around, plenty of experience here
  18. pies you legend, you always come through with a good positive reasons for and against posts. stupidly, the actual function of a sump (such as maintaining temperature) slipped my mind to be perfectly honest and since thats where the heat is generated, it makes sense reliability is key (i was so focused on water flow for the return) - especially those weekends you want to go away but worry all weekend that something will fail. as you say, iwaki are the bomb and there are little complaints against them. phuck the new kitchen,... it can wait FYI, here's a link to the tech doc (PDF) on Iwaki's I was sent by dlm wallace pumps: http://www.chimera.co.nz/tropicalfish/misc/md2002.pdf

you'd be a little concerned if it were around the other way though but salifert are certainly raved about the most - perhaps thats why!!! NEVER by salifert aiptasia exit though,... unless you wanna waste $30
  22. Spoke to DLM Wallace pumps in NZL (sole nz agent) and they reckon an Iwaki MD-55R5 is the one for me. Brand new, list price at $1,216 (ouch), said would do 15% discount, or $1,033 (still ouch) He reckons they are awesome 24x7 pumps, highly reliable (magnetic driven) and very durable (designed to handle highly corrosive fluids) Not keen on spending this much - but I dont have much option unless someone else has one? Being brand new comes with 1 year warranty at least! Tempting...
  23. yup, for about 7 years. got bored of it.
  24. PIECE OF SHIT! That's the top of my "worst purchases list" - it was cheap as, but you get what you pay for. Colours are too close that it makes it difficult to see one Ph reading over the next.
