    Oxygen shells

some of them also absorb ammonia and release salt. its better to just get a bit of water movement going (especialy when you can get an air pump for $10 nowdays)
  2. maybe a bit of bullying going on???, have had a Salvini before that only ever attacked the gills of other fish
  3. I find my cichlids prefer chep pallets
  4. I would get an ammonia and nitrate test kit very useful lil things (way more important than pH and KH also you should be able to take a sample into your LFS for a free test (just don't do it if they know you work for the oposition, they get cranky about that  )
  5. they are a natural mutation which has been line bred so will have a more rduced genetic background, they are also smaller and slower growing than regulars as the gene for the blue is linked to runts ( :dunno: ho or why, but this is the main reason promoted for them not being found by commercial breeders earlier due to the culling of runts) but I don't think "weaker" by this definition will be anything to worry about as they are very tough little fish, its like saying 10mm plate steel is weaker than 11mm plate steel
  6. does he need to post his location with a nick like that????
  7. i'll put them next to the "live" spiders I'm collecting for your breeding project
  8. read up about mycobacteria infections.... the sort of thing that just annoy you
  9. can't.... trying to syphon up crap at the same time. net would block. seriously thinking about setting up a "water park" bucket for them... syphon them up continue cleaning tank, put them back in and let them have another ride if they feel like it (which they will)
  10. you need a dehydrated puppy, just chain it up under your tank.
  11. ok got 5 leopard fish fry (yes the same ones every time) that think the syphon hose is a hydroslide and will not only go p it, but if put back in the tank head straight back there (these guys move to your fingers and nibble them when your scraping the glass) is there any way to clean the tank without providing them with a slide or spending more time worrying about the water im pouring down the drain than actually cleaning. just remember it is the same lil buggers every time in a tank with around 30 fry. (I can tell by the evil glint in their eyes... (and maybe the shae of their dorsal fins, spots, size etc...)) do I have to have a segregation chamber???
  12. huh??? what have you done now?????
  13. hrmm..... hey boss, im going to auckland to check out a random tank from someone who will probably never buy a thing from us, can I charge you $15 an hour for travel time and $30 for inspection of the tank....... im sure he'll agree.... btw if you see a job wanted ad on here tomorrow.....
  14. that is an interesting take on a reef tank, reminds me of diving off the dropoffs near cairns.... minus the black light
  15. untill you get airlock.........
  16. exciting times, except for the bored looking dude in the background. btw nice tank
  17. yes, but then again, my dad taught me "if you can't fix it, you shouldn't own it" also taught me that to "fix" meant knowing what you are doing. I can bodge just about anything, but I can also fix something properly. I think that "you need a qualification" to be able to do something is a bit sad considering half the people with qualifications couldn't do anything without a manual anyways
  18. I avoid fishless cycling for a few reasons, 1: you cannot be sure of the amount of ammonia you are adding unless you use chemical ammonia. 2: chemical ammonia may add other nasty things to the tank (im sure many will disagree but i'd rather be 100% sure than risk it) 3: fish handle minor ammonia rises in the wild (dry season pools) and do ok 4: a rotting prawn in your tank doesn't seem as good an idea as having a few fish swimming around 5: doing regular tests and learning the cycle properly will only help your fishkeeping skills. if you can keep fish alive during a cycle you can keep fish well. btw that graph shows rather high nitrate levels, whoever keeps that tank should do more water changes.
  19. nice enclosure.... but we want to see the animals as well :-?
