  1. I had that annoying ol' algae problem in my tank, Same scenario as yours, except taht my tank gets an hour or so of sunlight per day, and I dont have the same substrate. I fixed the problem by drastically increasing the amount of plants from 2 to 12, and the algae stopped growing completely. I have read thah some species of algae will burn itself out pretty quick in a new tank, and some other species wont go. Just increase the amount of plants in the tank, and they will leech the algae nurturing nutrients out of the water so the algae dies a painful death due to starvation   Hope Ive helped breaka\/\/ay SALES REMOVED... 5. I believe the size of the tank and the filteration equipment in use plays a huge role in the amount of water changes you have to do.
  6. Test kits cost approx $20 - $25 each in NZ, not too sure about which brands are so good.
  7. I reckon that if you change too much water in your tank it will kill the good bacteria that change fish wastes into the good stuff. Ive always been told not to change more than 25% of my water at any time. Ive stuck close to this rule and so far (3 months) I havn't had many problems.
  8. I do it Once every 2 weeks and my tank water stays pretty clean.
  9. Exactly my point, if It costs a lot, it is bad to go in and get a 3 foot marine, spend 5k on it then Decide to get a 6 foot marine.... might as well save up and go for the 6 foot.
  10. Damn.... thats a lot. If I ever go marine, I won't use a small tank. Ill get a bigger one. If you are going to spend heaps of money, don't do it half-assed. Actually it depends on what ya wanna do.
  11. I will never do anything so cruel. Its like taking you and putting u in water and seeing how you do. Not quite the same thing, but its still cruel. BTW, what is a laybrinth organ ?
  12. Im guessing that the fish can extract just enough oxygen from the Air to keep the vital body processes going ?
  13. No they dont. They ask you to arrange your own, and shipping to new zealand is at an outrageous price. Its not worth it.
  14. Must be some kind of modded out industrial strength air pump.
  15. I use a 6 litre/minute to aerate my 600 300 300 tank. My airstone is bendy and is 30cm long. My pump has 2 outlets, So I use a gang valve to channelboth the outlets into one tube thats connected to the air stone. Just get one of these bad boys - they are cheap, quiet (I have one) and good valu 4 money. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Lifestyle/Pets ... 502867.htm I hav traded with this trader and she is quick and polite. She will courier the pump to your doorstep. Check her other listings, she also has smaller pumps for sale. PS > All these pumps are brand new

    Power boards

I wouldnt risk using a power board with 10 outlets. THe ones with 5 are much safer. If u use too many appliances on one power board, it will cause an overload and cost u heaps in the long run because ur fuses and stuff will burn. Might even cause a power outage. If you need to run lots of appliances, get a second plug point installed. Its much safer and will give you peace of mind.

  21. The Plants I bought recently and put in my tank brought an uninvited visitor, the annoying Snail  . I have read a lot about these little plagues and heard they breed like rabbits and quickly turn ur aquarium into a snail nursery. Someone please help me out, I need to kill them, and fast. So far I've been getting them out by hand and killing them. There isn't a lot of them there, and I would not like to wait around and find out What its like when there is. Please help Also Another Question: If I buy an apple snail, won't it crawl outta the tank ? Any Posts appreciated
  22. I fixed it ! The impeller was clean, but the sponge was ** FULL ** Of crud. So after I cleaned it its not noisy at all. Now If I wanna hear it, Igotta stick my head in the tank

  24. I recently bought a new tank, and along with it a Shark 1 for $49. When I switched it on for the 1st time, It was so Quiet I had to put my ear onto the glass for me to hear it. But after about amonth of reliable operation (I turn the filter on and off 2wice a day when feeding to make sure the currents dont move the flakes around) My filter suddenly started making a rattling noise. I'm quite dissappointed about this, I expected it to happen after about a year. My cousin has a green colour submersble filter taht makes a noise that's about 5x as loud. Can anyone explain to me what could have caused this and please tell me if there is a way to make it quiet again. Please also tell me what part makes the noise.
