    this is weird

    Changeling :slfg:
  2. My presoak is just to dump some flakes in a cup of tank water, throw some pellets in as well, and once my nespresso is ready, pour it all in. And it seems to work as the black moors get their fair share on the bottom of the tank. All my other fish just get the flake or whatever chucked on to the surface. I've got angels that seem to only eat the flake while it's floating. If it sinks past them, they seem to ignore it.
  3. Some thoughts on pre-soaking .... Pros: Food ends up quicker on the sand bed, and this gives a better chance for all the gold fish to have a feed since you're restricting the food to a single layer. Those fish with poor eye sight ( exophthalmos ) can compete against the normal eyed fish. Celestials may not be better off though. Gold fish like to root among the sand bed anyway Food that floats when you have a hang on back filter tends to get pushed into the filter. Turning off HOBs can be painful because many do not self prime. Poor quality pellets and flake can swell a lot. Perhaps better it swells outside than inside. Cons: If you use a gravel bed, you'll lose a lot between the gravel There's some loss of nutrient if you soak too long. Let the flaming begin!
  4. I could fill a water bed with a cubic metre! I filled my bottle to half, and it has been fluidized for a month now, and the k1 looks as new as the day I put it in. I see no visible microbial slime. Perhaps archaea likes my sand bed better
  5. I would guess your user's fish would be safe until the food starts to rot. Unless they're gold fish and they'll ate it all up! So, I'd suggest finding a few videos on youtube to instruct the adult there on how to suck up as much food as they can, and on how to do a water change. they will likely have to do a few consecutive daily water changes, and also clean the filter of any food that has got into it.
  6. Sorry to hear ... I would offer but I don't have wheels right now, and no time when they return this evening.
  7. or, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bio-Filter-Media-Kaldnes-Aquaculture-and-Aquariums-/110837259846?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&hash=item19ce6a5e46 50L for <= AUD$125 + floating to NZ
  8. Just saw some sponge filters there with free p&h to NZ. Must give them a try.
  9. Just a quick look .. stuff is not too bad on ebay.com.au as well, and freight would be a lot cheaper than from Europe or USA.
  10. He was just on Campbell Live with all the other local creditors. Didn't catch his business name though ... A real shame that they didn't wait one day ie.after the 20th of the month to raid. At least the locals would have got paid.
  11. I've got a sine wave inverter as well but my huge gell cell batteries are dead. Might consider getting new batteries if PV panels have come down much in price over the last decade.
  12. Need to source yourself a cheap UPS ... it's not as though these things draw as much current as they produce. I've seen the odd UPS for sale on Graysonline .... just usually they are so heavy the cost is prohibitive coming from Auckland.
  13. I poked my finger in while it was off, and adjusted the impeller a few times. On the last time it started again. :slfg: Not ideal but least I know what to do. At least I had my other two biological filters running all the time.
  14. Yeah, I found the cogging effect quite strong. I hand built a dynamo but mine was wind powered
  15. Meeting with Port Nicholson Glass today. Advised to pull everything out and put in a steel frame, and not rest it on the chimney. Steel allows us to relevel and block if the house is not level ( which it isn't). Only one overflow hole.
  16. That sounds like a bad design. Maybe permanent magnets are too strong or something?
  17. Not particularly noisy. But I had it in the sink watching the impeller and it didn't budge suggesting an electrical issue. I am going to heat up the tank to see if warming it fixes a cold joint issue.
  18. Thanks. I recognized the riccia as being the one that caused someone's rash !
  19. I found this link http://www.wetwebmedia.com/fwsubwebindex/gldfshmalnut.htm more informative though I don't know which plants we have here that we can grow. I do grow duckweed though in my other tanks which I regularly harvest to feed the goldfish.
  20. My tank filter died on me ... impeller makes no movement whatsoever, and so I replaced it temporarily until I can get a warranty repair/replacement from Juwel. In the meantime I am using a somewhat over powered 104F ( 2000L/hr in a 160L tank ), but this filter also seems faulty. When it works, it works, but if i turn it off to give the poor fish some rest from the current, it often refuses to turn on. I've put the powerhead into the sink, and the impeller refuses to budge, and suddenly it comes to life again as though it some type of reset circuit in it. I am presuming apart from the impeller, the sealed unit has no moving parts which makes me wonder why it should be intermittent like this. Cold solder joints?
  21. That article looks okay, though I find the spelling mistakes jarring.
  22. Going to use polystyrene for the non visible sides. Does ECCA provide a grant for this? Also wondering if it would be too expensive/or worth it, to double glaze the visible sides.
  23. From what I have read, then yes. More frequent vegetable fibre feeding is required to prevent digestive issues.
  24. If it's solid, it's good. Better than a colonic washout! if it's stringy, long, and trailing... then the fish is lacking vegetable fibre.
  25. Builder reckons I should lose the old style gas heater since I've already put in a heat pump in the room. So, no flue proposed.
