  1. Oxygenation occurs at the surface of the water which is why the surface area of the water is used to calculate the carrying capacity of the tank. The air bubblers just breaks up the water surface which increases the oxygen exchange at the surface.
  2. So, why don't the LFS start their own TM shops??

    Sick WCMM

My 3 fry disappeared and then have reappeared at the same size. So, I wonder if these are different ones and the others died or got eaten. The female is again having problems with buoyancy and looks large so may be egg bound. Should I attempt to remove the fry and raise them separately?
  4. The majority view prevailed did it not? But it would be good if Kate Wilkinson explained NZ's position.
  5. Is there any reason why this food can't be made under license locally? With NZ's reputation we should be exporting and not importing.
  6. If the importer is not bringing in large quantities, they may not get a price much different from retail in the first place. I recall importing computer equipment from Germany some years ago and there was a fair bit of work involved ncluding filling in import documents, paying GST, going to the airport customs to clear them etc. And the price needed to reflect all of this.
  7. Is this something historical .. that most societies hold their meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month?
  8. I've had some of this plastic mesh under the outflow of a HOB ( to suppress the waterfall noise which SWMBO doesn't like ), so it's exposed to ambient lighting over the last half year and pretty much no algae has been growing on it. So, it has failed to work as an algae scrubber for me. Perhaps strong lighting is the key.
  9. The poly that goes underneath the tank evens out any minor distortions. But I haven't had a problem with uneven decking timber. It all lies flat, especially when there are a few 10s of kgs of weight on top of it.
  10. Dunno about plywood but I asked the guy at Bunnings to cut me enough lengths of decking timber which I placed under my tanks which were too wide for their supports. And if you place decking timber so that the ridges are underneath, then any water that does get down there has a chance to dry out.
  11. Now you tell her after she's filled up the tank again!
  12. Hard to imagine that this is the case here .. a tank that is just a month old, that was having 3 PWCs a week.
  13. Is that a couple of frogs perched on the top leaf?
  14. one suggestion .. you should loop the wires to the power sockets so that the water can not drip directly into them ie. a loop is formed below the level of the sockets.
  15. Ok, sounds like I've been overfeeding them ... will just use dechlorinated water from now on to see if they recover.
  16. BTW, the only reason I got the lucky bamboo in the first place was because I saw someone on youtube had a whole bunch of the stuff which he was using in his sump as a nitrate scrubber.
  17. My neighbour was just running the tank water down across his tank lid which was sloped at an angle so that the water flowed right across from one end to the end and back into the tank. The tank was sat right next to a window and the glass was thick with green algae which he cleaned off occasionally. Same principle but for a fresh water tank.
  18. This is what is happening .. not yellowing from the roots up as you see reported in other fora and the roots look okay
  19. I've read about these projects a while ago and they seem to scrape heaps of green algae off ... but yours seems to be producing much less ( or I remember this stuff all wrong ). They were using incandescent lighting I think. I wonder if it'll help to use direct sunlight on the scrubber? And also since the algae is supposed to be removing the nitrates for you, shouldn't you only clean one side at a time so that you have a mass of algae still working for you?
  20. Don't think so ... mine went yellow at the ends and then went all soft. I had to cut it back below the yellow stem, and should've sealed it with wax to stop rot.
  21. What were your nitrates before you added the scrubber?
  22. Around xmas time I bought a few stems of lucky bamboo. I've been changing the water every couple of weeks or more frequently using the water from my goldfish tank. The stems are kept away from direct sunshine and I've not added any micronutrients. But several of the stems have now started to yellow from the top down. Is fish water laden with nitrates too strong for these guys? Or should I be adding micronutrients?
  23. I think you'll find that many people do not think that high phosphates kill fish. Perhaps it was the fluctuating pH levels though other sites would say pH fluctuations are not important as much as the osmotic pressure that goes with differing naturally occurring pH changes.
  24. The only heater I've had fail so far is a Jager ... just went cold on me. The other heater I lost by pouring cold water on it while on .. sort of exploded on me These guys i suspect are a little biased Reminds me of the AMD vs Intel CPUs when the fan dies.
