  1. Too much water movement can be fatal for new fry. Forget a canister filter. As long as your breeding tank is not too big (60L or less) I would use a sponge filter only. Another option is to put the fry into a floating "fry saver" for the first week or two after being stripped just while they're adjusting too life outside of the mouth and fending for themselves etc. I have an ice cream container that ive cut two sides out of and glued gauze too and stuck some polystyrene to the sides to float it. I give the fry 2 weeks in there then move them to a 55L breeding tank. I find this to be a successful system. Hope that helps
  2. They have two models with one being slightly more expensive than the other. There is a photo in the product listing with CO2 rigged up to the metre. Check it out.
  3. Well Coral I have to agree with the multitudes... AMAZING tanks and of course the fish!! Let me know if you are ever selling some...

  6. In doing a search on the forum I found this thread with some photos. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=17112&hilit=acei I've PM'd the guy to see if he still has them and if he had any success breeding them.
  7. Just wondering if this species is available here and if there are any breeders? http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=835
  8. If I could add my two cents... I would recommend reconsidering your substrate. Gravel is not the best for Malawi's. I would look at aragonite chip or silica sand. The sand is cheaper but the aragonite chip helps buffer the PH. Gravel is too big for them to dig and move around HFF sells the chip for $50 for 25kg which is heaps for your tank. Considering the benefits to the fish and the water it would be money well spent! Here's the webpage for the aragonite chip from HFF http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/detail/view/aragonite-1mm-25kg-sack/m/1217/

    saving babies?

yeah, my experience is like smidey - when you're pullling the tank apart the adults are more concerned about you than chasing fry. I've never lost a fry to a meal in this situation. Good luck!

  14. Hey Nav, sounds interesting. Do you have photos or a diagram?
  15. I have two sheets of 6mm 1800x600 and some other smaller pieces. Could do 1200(l)x350(h)x450(w) 160L
  16. Hi all, I have decided to add another tank to the family and have some 6mm glass in storage to DIY it. I currently have 2 large tanks, a 400L malawi breeding colony tank with 40 mature malawi's and a 540L tank which currently house 200+ fry that I'm growing out to sell. Now that I have begun selling and shipping, it is a mega pain trying to catch fry in such a large tank, plus, it's in my lounge and the dismantling and general upheavel that goes along with catching, packing and shipping fish is probably best left in the garage! So I've decided that the 540L is going to be a display tank with new breeding colonies started. That means I need a new home to house the fry. I have two 60L tanks, but they are only good for the first 4 - 6 weeks and can't house enough fry. I am also mindful of making the tank a size that could be used as a single species breeder tank, so I was thinking about a 120L tank 1000mm(L)x300mm(H)x400mm(W) What do you reckon? Is 300mm high enough or should I go to 350 or 400? 1000 or 1200? If you were in my position and had 6mm glass, what size would you build?
  17. I just stripped one of my electric yellow labs and counted 29 fry. I normally get around 20 at a time, so this is probably the largest hold that I can remember. It got me wondering... :cofn: what's the largest batch of fry you guys and gals have got from your mouth brooders? :spop: Here's a photo of the 29 little tikes :happy2:
  18. Thanks for the advice and David R, I will do a search for some of your sump ideas etc. I will keep you posted on how the project goes. Thanks again!
  19. I'm looking at moving from a canister to a sump for the first time and would like to build my own sump from 5mm & 6mm glass. I have space for a 500x500x500 sump in my new stand and it will be filtering 350 litres with 35 mature malawi's. The tank size is 1750 x 450 x 475. I like the idea of a wet/dry with a rain plate and using bio balls plus noodles but that's as far as I've got. I have built several tanks in my time but never a sump, so any ideas, suggestions, concepts would be most appreciated as well as hardware suggestions e.g. pump and plumbing. Thanks!
  20. Nice work ryan. I have a couple of dems holding, but might give them another week before I pull everything apart again!
  21. Take it out and have a look. If the shaft wobbles around inside the impeller then the impeller will need replacing. You will see if the hole has been increased with use. It's a $20-$30 fix.
