  1. I am happy with the quantities and ratios of fish per species in my lounge tank now so I finally decided to aquascape it albiet a budget one! Up until now it's been pretty bare due to the hassle of breaking it down to catch fish :nilly: It's pretty much just river rock from the 309 Rd on the outskirts of Whitianga and a couple bits of bog wood. Nothing to fancy here! I did have some java fern attached to the wood but it's pretty much destroyed now. I'm useless at keeping and maintaining healthy plants! Anyway, some pics of my friday night aquascaping sesh! My rock selection... A blank canvas... Finished product...
  2. you go a good ol' fashioned tank orgy going on there! I just aquascaped my 540L and filled it back up and BAMM! the demasoni's are ice blues are having at it! There is circle pits of desire going off all over the tank! Ha! :slfg:
  3. looking good Chris. You have some beautiful fish there bud
  4. Yeah 15 of the fish were in my 540L and although I did drop 50% water, with a 1800x600 footprint and 270L of aquatic real estate, the fish were still tough to catch! Especially the female ice blues. My stock levels in the 540L are about right per species now so I've decided to aquascape a bit more thoughtfully and leave the fish to grow and breed. Still would mind adding a couple more species while the goings good
  5. What would be the max size tank using 6mm laminate (3+3)?
  6. Bugger. I have some 6mm laminate (3mm + 3mm) which I was going to have professionally cut for a couple 1000x400x400 tanks. I guess I'm going to have to rethink that idea! Glad I read this thread. Thanks for the heads up!
  7. Hi all, I spent over two hours today (not to mention the 50% water changes on 3 tanks last night!) catching and packing 40 fish for shipping! :nilly: I'm always looking for ways to streamline the process, but it is quite time consuming! I am not interested in shortcuts that may jeoparadise the fish arriving alive and well, but I'm sure some of you seasoned breeders would have some handy tips that might speed things up. Today was defintely an exception. 40 fish (including some adults) is the biggest shipment for me to date. Here's a photo of todays shipment almost ready to go... How long does it take you to fulfill an order? If you have any tips, due share
  8. Check out uarujoey's youtube channel if you haven't already done so. He has several DIY tutorials on building sumps, standpipes, overflows etc. Super helpful stuff. http://www.youtube.com/user/uarujoey?feature=g-user-lik
  9. this thread is both a waste of time and extremely entertaining :slfg:
  10. Thanks for the tip, I will definitely give that a go
  11. Fixed the problem. I had moved the photos to another album which breaks the incoding I guess.
  12. Tank build complete and currently being water tested. No leaks so far :happy1: Any stocking suggestions???
  13. I did my high school years at Whakatane High :slfg: It was while I was living in Whakatane that I got into fish keeping. Those were the good ol' days... I would be keen to trade fish. I go to tauranga regularly so who knows...
  14. Well I guess i'll be running the "agression experiment" in my lounge 6fter with 5 male and 9 female red tops plus dems, yellows & johanni. Will be interesting to see how the 5 dudes get on as they grow. I have another 6fter to seperate them out if necessary.
  15. Yeah only towards other males when the ratios don't work or the tank is too small. I haven't experienced them to be any more aggro than most africans. I think they get a bad rap.
  16. I have used river rocks in my tanks no probs. I put them in a large bucket and let the water run over them for about 10-15min to get rid of most the dust and dirt then I put them in our dishwasher without any powder. I usually would do two cycles just to be certain. Dishwashers heat the water to quite a high heat so it should kill most things. Won't stop toxic leaching however..
  17. Why thanks! I love these fish but they don't seem to be a popular species. I tried selling some on here and had no interest. Obviously they're not flavour of the month! But I thing they're :nfs:
  18. I mentioned it to her a while back. She seemed interested.
  19. :bounce: Just bumping this post to keep the dream alive! :slfg: I would love to hear from any Coromandel fish keepers interested in starting an informal fish club. P.S. I cook a mean bbq...
  20. Here's the thread for the 200L project if you're interested http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=56997
  21. So a month or so ago I cut up the glass for a new tank but with Christmas and then the birth of our 4th child, I haven't had a spare weekend to build it. Finally this weekend I had some spare time (what's that!) and got stuck into it (excuse the pun). The tank is made from glass I picked up from a building site and the local dump and it was all FREE  My only outlay for this project was a tube of silicone = $15 :happy1: The base, back and sides are made of 5mm tinted glass (and old conservatory!) and the front panel, bracing and lid is 6mm clear (and old french door). The overall dimensions are 940(l)x460(w)x460(h) I still haven't decided what I'm going to stock it with but it will more than likely be a single species tank. Here are some pics... The glass before it got cleaned up The front panel glued to the base The sides go on Bracing completed with the exception of the side braces for the lid to sit on. Need to borrow some clamps to finish! Top view. I decided not to use a middle brace to make it easier to net fish and clean the tank. It will have one big lid that will sit inside the bracing and I will make a handle for it to make it easier to lift. Obviously this was never intended to be a display tank, so I haven't been to fussy with my gluing. Cutting the access for cords and plumbing was a bit of fun. Always hard to make small breaks in 6mm glass! You can see that it didn't break clean on one side  , but hey, the hole still works  I will post a couple more pics once it's complete and cleaned up.
  22. congrats on the GBA babies! I have 5 in one of my tanks and hoping to see little wriggles one day too. How old are your breeders? Keep the thread updated. I will keep a close eye on your progress.
