  1. I use Silaflex RTV Professional Range for Glass and Ceramics. Made countless tanks with my head stuck in there for hours, for weeks at a time.. never a prob. The warnings say "Use in a ventilated area".. but NEVER "This is life threatening"

    Hi from Wanganui

Hi Shar, and welcome Seems that as soon as we put our hand in the water we get infected with the fish bug.. great stuff hey :) What are you planning for the three footer...? Whatever it is... don't rush.. and don't overstock too early. Lots of info here on setting up, and ask away if you are in doubt..

    Hello!!

Hi Christine, Welcome to the fishroom Where are you located...? (add to your profile.. saves a lot of asking) Your fish sound great, and we just love pics of fish if you can post some Call in the chatroom (if you have Java installed) around 9pm ish.
  4. One of the theories behind the Clowns getting WS is that firstly they are a scale less species, and the other is that due to most Clowns being imported they have to spend lengthy periods in quarantine under very hygenic conditions (compared to a normal tank) and so, once out of quarantine they become subseptical to the first thing that comes along... which is usually whitespot. They say if you can get them to survive for the first month or so they will live for many years under the right conditions, but tend to lose their dominant dark stripes with age.
  5. It's surprising how even "reflected" sunlight can give you an algae prob. Ommited to ask what lighting you are using, and how long you have your lights on...? If it's still fishless, then it can't really be from an overload of nutrients. Only solution I can think of is shading the tank for a day or so to see if things improve, or reducing the amount of time the lights are on. Possibly your first fish might be a small pleco or BN.. or a SAE

    Ciao

Welcome to the NZ Fishroom Brian. As you have probably gathered, there's quite a few clued up marine members here, and some are just starting out, so you won't be alone.
  7. Shouldn't have turned green in such a short time unless it was getting direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Have you added anything.. (chemicals.. conditioners etc) to the water ? Do you have a filter running ?
  8. A member on my site sent me this as they had outgrown her large tank in only a few months... so be prepared for what you are getting into. These guys are over 11" long.
  9. Found this online at one of the forums. Seems to work according to the posts
  10. Hi Archer, Welcome to the fishroom. Fascinating fish the Archers.. have you any pics ?

    Pleco Lovers

Glad you found some interest. They run a "Swap A Link" system, so my links plus the NZ Fishroom are posted there so we may get a few visits from Singapore. For so few forums they certainly get a lot of members online.

    New Toy!

Hard to believe that you guys spend... (what is it you recon).. 5K plus on a setup, but yet fail to use a secondary ($45:00) heater as a backup in the event of fluctuations or failure.... Amazing No disrespect guys.. but priorities are priorities Even at 30hrs a week, that's a lot of work for a "single" heater.

Interesting site for Plecos and such http://www.plecofanatics.com Based in Singapore, but all English.
  15. There's also a couple in the "Useful Links" at the head of this section.
  16. So do I .. joined years ago, but haven't been there for a while. I think Clothahump is on the staff there.
  17. It was based on the old "Candle Power" if I remember correctly. Lumen.. or lumin... is the Latin for Light.

    Hello evryone

Hi Henry, welcome to the fishroom. There's heaps of Wellingtonians here, but no matter where they come from they're all nutty... about fish that is
  19. Hi Aaron, Water changes depend mainly on your fish load and the quality of your filtration... ie:... lotsa fish.. low filtration... more water changes. Some do changes every day (discus keepers).. while others do changes every three weeks or so... even longer.. months sometimes The "NEED" for a water change is when the balance of your water starts to deviate, especially the ammonia side or nitrites.. which you don't want any of, but low levels of Nitrates are not too bad. So... if you see any sign of ammonia buildup... then it time for a water change. Good filtration and live plants will help keep your tank stable, but overloading with fish stocks or overfeeding will soon upset this, no matter how good your filters are, or how many water changes you do. Filters should only be "rinsed" in a container of tank water so as to preserve the bacteria. Change only half of the media at a time (if this is possible) or setup a standby filter (a corner box type or HOB) to tide you over if you "have" to change the media for new stuff. HTH

    carbon

Hi Doch, Don't exactly knowwhat you are doing.. or trying to do, but the Activated Carbon is designed to remove impurities from the water and only has a short life before it becomes inactive. (two or three weeks) The water must be flowing through it in order for it to do its job, so the ideal place would perhaps be on the water return from your sump.
  21. All in good fun Robbo.. and I think Alan knows that. I now know the reason.. my apologies Alan
  22. Hey there Wazza.. Sorry for highjacking your thread slightly There's a good plant survey on site here (see the headings).. plus there's an excellent one here that has some great pics.. http://www.tropica.com/default.asp Most of the Crypts would possibly be ignored by the Tinnies, but quite a lot are low light plants, which might not suit your needs. It seems (might be wrong here) that the darker greens are ignored more than the lighter, softer types, so this might be an avenue to try. I would try suspending a couple of lettuce leaves in there to see if they would take to it. (much cheaper than plants)
  23. Come on Alan... spit it out... It's no good sitting there allowing the "sap" or the "ambulia" to grow out of both sides of your mouth... we need some hard facts here.. plus we need the definition of "a LOT"... plus we need to know at what point it releases this "disasterous gas" and to what quatities it becomes dangerous.. perhaps explosive .. plus .. why isn't this plant completely banned if this is the case... and also what is the effect it might have on mankind as a whole... this could be a job for Greenpeace.. (another way to spend countless millions) .. As footnote.. there are countless plants that taste nasty to both fish and animals.. and like us.. they won't eat what they don't like, and fish in particular would starve to death rather than eat something they don't want to. Another footnote... I stripped a three footer some months back that was so dense with Ambulia.. Cabomba and Myriophyllum (spelling corrected) that I was trimming just about every few days in order to be able to see my fish. Some of the strands were over three or four foot long.. as were many of the Vallis. (No CO2 here BTW.. just fish waste) I'm a bit out of touch with the present methods (I freely admit this).. but I can't say I have ever heard of this before, and will certainly stand corrected if it is indeed a fact. My Sig below says.. (well .. read it).. perhaps I have just learned something new
  24. Just got around to looking at the rest Sue... Didn't know you had so many species. Brilliant pics.. you sure are getting some great results
  25. Time for your medication again Alan
