I think if you took notice of every little thing and danger involved with the keeping of fish... you would pack it in. How about the TB.. The toxic stings... The skin infefections through the ammonia getting into open sores... ... the fish that sting.. the ones that can take the end of your finger off... not counting all the chemicals that are within the products we handle all the time... the cancer causing ones etc... the dangers off electrocution... plus the countless risks we take each day... and have been doing for decades without problems... until some bright spark comes along and decides to write a paper on it... and possibly doesn't even keep fish.. (not read the full article) We will finish up a set of Aquanuts in specially designed suits that will only allow us to visit our fish in hermitacally sealed clean rooms. The world is bad enough... enjoy your hobby. I had Scats, Monos... Puffers... and several others for years... with not the slighttest prob Nothing wrong with Scats Mate... in the right environment they take some beating for a good show if you have a few with some other brackish types.

Hi Paul.. If you don't shroud the lights as suggested... you will be driving the fish potty with the lights going on and off at every temp variation. There's a few specials going around on these Oil Filled Heaters.. (about seventy odd bucks if I remember correctly)... so one of those plus a ten buck desk fan from the Warehouse would be all you would need.. as the Oil Filled heaters have a biult in thermostat.. so you would save on that. They are pretty narrow as well... so won't take up a lot of room.. plus they are water proof and safe. You would still need some form of lighting.. but the power saver flouro's or bulbs would not set you back much. If you already have a cupboard.. then you would do the lot for around a hundred bucks.. with a bit spare for fish food Bill.

But having said this... .. (..and my Latin is pretty rusty these days..).. Parotocinclus jumbo "still" does not translate to anything that resembles "Pit Bull".. so it is ... like many others and just a local adopted name. If you went shopping in the Far East for a Parotocinclus jumbo.. you would possibly get a similar fish... whereas if you asked for a "Pit Bull" you would possibly get something either on a leash... or on a plate .. which is why we should stick to the scientific names where possible. Sounds staunch.. and pretty macho.. but has no meaning in this part of the world... and is a sales gimmick. Bill.

Parotocinclus jumbo ... Which is actually a bit misleading in itself... as Par.. means "equal".. .(Equaloticinclus...?) he he. and the fish is part of the Loricariidae family.. which includes the Hypoptopoma and Otocinclus genera.. a different family.. The P. jumbo has a dorsal fin.. and the Oto...(sp).. don't. Seems the name Pit Bull Pleco was "adopted" in 2002 Pit Bull Pleco, LDA-25 But the Parotocinclus was named/discovered around 1877. No Jude... the pond walls were... but the ice often got to three or more inches... and often just overnight.. Bill

Often in these situations there was little option.. as several times in previous years the foot thick concrete sides had cracked due to ice. Can't say we ever lost a fish through doing this.. and some of them were over a decade old Bill.

They wore ear muffs because of the cold :) Never heard of that before MLF.. (edit:.. Sorry I mean Fishy-T).. and we wouldn't do it where the fish normally congregate. Quite often the ice was so thick you couldn't see them anyway

Back in the UK we used to have to break the ice with a sledge hammer because it was that thick. We also had a pipe that protruded above the water .. but was cut away below so that we could just push a rod down the pipe to break the ice in there... which was invarably thinner. You used to be able to get 50watt heaters.. and 100watt are certainly still available. Thing is... you give no details. A 100W heater in a 300 litre tank would do nothing... whereas the same heater in a 40litre tank would be possibly fine. Then there's conditions... Like tank location.. drafty room.. and in this case you might consider insulating around the non-viewing sides with styrene.. which may just hold the level where you want it. Bill.

Do you have an electric blanket...? Drape it around it and set it on the lowest setting. Insulate it against the tank with paper or a blanket if you are worried. Bill.

And in around three months you would be possibly riddled with rheumatics from the rising damp of the tanks... but you could run a dehumid unit Bill.
